EPISODE 32: WE CAN BUILD OUR OWN RESILIENCE

56m · Published 18 Aug 10:00

Buckle up friends, this is a good one.  We dig in deep learning about resilience and strength. Resilience involves the ability to recover and rebound from challenges and setbacks. While it may seem that some people are naturally better than others we’ve come to realize that we can build our resilience.  Like building a muscle, increasing your resilience takes time and intentionality.

Being resilient means facing difficulties head-on instead of falling into despair or using unhealthy coping strategies. We focus on the many ways we can build resilience as an individual and of course, a community.

While resilience is so important in adults it is equally as important in children. Join us as we share many ways to help our kids become more resilient.

The good news is that we can all build resilience without going through trauma.  Once we build resilience we are capable of so much more than we ever imagined.

WE GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK

Resiliency is like building muscle, this week we are going to practice.  Take one or two skills that build resiliency and add them to your week.
Share with your accountability what you tried and how it worked.
Let us know how you had some resiliency into our life on our socials.

EPISODE 31: BEING HIGHLY SENSITIVE IN AN OVERWHELMING WORLD

53m · Published 11 Aug 10:00

It’s all about being sensitive on this episode of We Go Boldly as we talk through the idea of what it means to be a highly sensitive person in an overwhelming world. We delve into the definitions of sensitive, insensitive, and highly sensitive as a personality trait as defined by Elaine Aron many years ago. We talk through some of the science behind personality traits and how high sensitivity impacts us as individuals.

The cultural impact of how we view sensitivity as individuals and then as a larger culture come into play as well. We examine how our own bias impacted our research, our responses, and how we went about unravelling that bias as highly sensitive people.

Some of the key benefits to being highly sensitive are increased intuition, creativity, adaptability and capacity for empathy. Highly sensitive people are often more deeply impacted by sensory input. They think and feel deeply, and look for meaning in their lives. Some people believe that highly sensitive individuals tend to seek out more spiritual answers and connections.

On the flip side of that there are some challenges to being sensitive, outside of the typical stereotyping and cultural stigmatization. Highly sensitive people are predisposed to sensory overload and need more time to themselves. They also are more prone to perfectionism, being deeply impacted by conflict, and overwhelmed by the expectations of others. Developing and maintaining healthy boundaries becomes extremely important for people with this personality trait.

For anyone who expresses sensitivity, whether a highly sensitive person or otherwise, society often puts stigma and negative connotations on such expression. We often hear sensitivity equated with weakness or being “too sensitive.” People equate sensitivity in women with hysteria and delicate natures prone to overreacting. All of this is a reaction to discomfort, and not the discomfort of the sensitive person. Rather the discomfort of the reacting individual. Sensitivity is not as taboo as it once was, but we still have a long way to go.

EPISODE 30: PRACTICING ACCEPTANCE CAN TRANSFORM YOUR LIFE

59m · Published 04 Aug 11:28

Every week this season we are approaching empathy from a different and sometimes difficult perspective.  Acceptance is hard. Acceptance means embracing reality. It is a willingness to experience things as they are, instead of insisting that they be as you want them to be.

It is only with acceptance that we can truly embrace change and practice empathy. Acceptance allows you to move on instead of being perpetually stuck in a quagmire of “should haves” and “would haves”.

We reflect on our  own hesitancy with acceptance and the steps we can take to achieve it.  As with everything else, acceptance takes continue practice and hard work.

Join us for this week and we can do the hard work to build collective empathy.

GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK

Journal time: Where in your life could you be more accepting? EIther inwardly or outwardly?
Journal time: Think back to a time when you were not accepting?  How would it have been easier and so how can you apply it to your life today?

EPISODE 28: SHOWING EMPATHY IN A WORLD OF STRUGGLE

52m · Published 21 Jul 13:54

“Hope is a function of struggle.” - Brene Brown

“The struggle is real.”  We see this in social media, on mugs, on t-shirts.  It’s overused and often shows a lack of understanding of actual struggle.

In this episode we dig deep into the concept of true struggle and our need for empathy.  When we ask “How are you?” we need to really mean it.  Beyond individually, empathy is necessary in order for us to be able to provide help and advocate collectively.

America is a country in deep pain. We need to create safe spaces.  Allow for different journeys.  Be open to difficult conversations.  We need to build collective empathy.

Join us as we take a closer  look at what true struggle is and how we can help.

GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK

EPISODE 27: NICE IS NOT KIND, AND KIND DOES NOT ALWAYS FEEL NICE

45m · Published 14 Jul 11:29

Welcome to Episode 3 of Season 3 on We Go Boldly, and today we are talking about Nice versus Kind. We are looking closely at how to create a more empathetic society by taking a hard look at our own understanding and application of niceness and kindness.

Niceness is usually transactional in nature. Nice people do things for people with the expectation that we will get something in return, or that we will be more liked and/or included in a group. Often people mask their true feelings or desires in order to seem more nice and agreeable. People pleasers are nice. The niceness we are referring to grows out of insecurity and a need to be liked more than a need to

Kindness is grounded in love, compassion and empathy for others or for yourself. When we act with kindness, we are giving or doing without thought for what we might receive in return. Sometimes when we do or say something with kindness, it can feel uncomfortable for us and the people around us. Kindness thrives in people with good boundaries, empathy, and societal understanding.

Many people confuse niceness for kindness and vice versa. For years we were told to “be nice,” “mind our manners,” and “be polite.” All too often we hear things like don’t bring up religion or politics in polite conversation. This can be a form of toxic niceness, not rocking the boat for the sake of the comfort of others, and people pleasing at the expense of standing up for your own personal ethics.

Importantly, we need to learn to be kind to ourselves as well as the larger world. Starting with ourselves and growing outward helps create the kind of collective empathy we are talking about this season. The ability to talk to ourselves with love, compassion and kindness. To create real boundaries and stand up for what is right, even in the discomfort, begins to weave the thread that will help make up the collective empathy as we all work together.

“A single act of kindness throws out roots in all directions, and the roots spring up and make new trees.” - Amelia Earhart

EPISODE 26: FINDING EMPATHY

48m · Published 07 Jul 04:10

Maya Angelou once said, "I think we all have empathy. We may not have enough courage to display it."

Join us this week as we dig deep into empathy.  As always we start with the definition of empathy and why we find it so important.  We look at empathy from both the individual perspective and the greater societal perspective.  It matters in situations both large and small.  Not ones to shy away from a little research we share what we learned about cognitive empathy, emotional empathy, and cognitive empathy.

The difference between sympathy and empathy can be confusing and so we take apart each issue to understand why we need more empathy, not sympathy, in the world.

Lastly, we focus on how to cultivate empathy in our own lives and in our children.  No surprise that the concept of books and reading comes up and is discussed.

Join us this week and share your thoughts on empathy with us!

GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK

Take an empathy inventory.  Look back and see how you have handled other people’s challenges in the last day, week, month.
We can all benefit from practicing empathy.  Pick one of the ways we discussed to cultivate empathy and practice.
Discuss with your accountability partner and let us know how its going on our social.

EPISODE 23: CONNECTING TO MIND, BODY,AND SPIRIT

39m · Published 16 Jun 11:54

“Connection is the experience of oneness. It’s having shared experiences, relatable feelings, or similar ideas. It is the feeling of belonging to something greater than oneself.”

We are back with part two of our conversation on connection. Life, parenthood, schooling, career, marriage, can make it hard to keep the sense of connection between body, mind, and spirit.  Life becomes a series of check marks.

The loss of connection makes it harder to hear your inner voice, to feel your purpose, to be open to the possibilities of the universe.

We talk about our struggles finding and maintaining connection both with our inner voice and with the outerworld.

Music, art, shared experiences, and help keep the connection were especially necessary during the pandemic.

Join us as we dive back in and discuss connections.  Head over to our socials to tell us how you maintain connect.
