12. FINDING GUIDANCE and CONNECTION in the SILENCE and SPACE of MEDITATION

50m · Published 31 Mar 11:55

In today’s episode we ask you, where do you find your connection?  We ask you this because in order to hear your inner voice and connect to your authentic self you are often required to find the silence and shut out the noise.  Silence is what allows you to hear yourself more clearly and to hear the world around you.  As you search for silence you may find that your mind is more cluttered than you realized.  Or you may have found that the voices that are the loudest in your mind are not actually your own.  Those voices could be society as a whole or a certain person in your history or current life.  It is the silence that can give you the peace to let you focus on your own thoughts.

Meditation comes in many forms and allows you to connect to the silence.  It allows you to turn inward in a deep way and connect both with yourself and your sense of spirituality. Meditation is considered a type of mind-body complementary medicine. Meditation can produce a deep state of relaxation and a tranquil mind.

You can meditate with a purpose - to calm yourself, soothe anxiety, release stress, alleviate pain etc.  Meditation can simply be used to help you become more mindful of what is going on inside your own body and mind - to notice.  The process of mediation is filled with trial and errors and false starts.

Grounding is another way to find silence in your life and gives you an opportunity to deepen your connection to the earth and the natural world.  When we ground ourselves, we’re calming or slowing down our emotions and getting more in touch with our internal and external worlds. Grounding our energy can be helpful when we feel either unbalanced or nervous. Being grounded also means that we’re more mindful with respect to our environment.

Join us as we talk about how we have failed and succeeded at integrating both meditation and grounding into our lives.

10: MAKING CONNECTIONS THROUGH RELATIONSHIP

49m · Published 17 Mar 11:11

In today’s episode of We Go Boldly we are talking about relationships, friendship, and finding people to lift us up.  Join us as we wrap up Season One and discuss what happens when you start listening to your inner voice and begin to make changes in your life.  What happens to relationships when you become the more authentic version of yourself.

We look at what makes healthy and happy relationships. Making sure you are getting and giving in equal parts so you both benefit and grow from the friendship.  As you learn more you will make decisions about how you are serving others and how your friends are serving you.  We also talk about the importance of setting boundaries in our relationships. Boundaries are as much for yourself as they are for others.

While making friends as an adult can be difficult, the best part about making new friends is an ability to create healthier friendship patterns. New friendships give you a fresh start, the opportunity to learn from past friend relationships and forge new ones that have even stronger ties. You can find the friends who will most compliment you and help you achieve a more fulfilling life, people who you can be there for, too.

We share our personal struggles and challenges with finding friends who are supporting. Learning the lesson that if someone looks down upon your goals that is more a reflection on them than you. Friends can be there for your joy and heartache as well as your successes.

GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK

This week we want you to make a friend's inventory, either in your head or grab your notebook.  Figure out the friends that you would like to reconnect with and the friends whom you need to disconnect.  When you have your list of friends to reconnect with, send a text or a note.  Share your gratitude.

9: ADAPTABILITY IN A WORLD OF CONFORMITY

48m · Published 10 Mar 10:31

In today’s episode of We Go Boldly we are talking about adaptability. Dive in with us as we discuss the differences and intersections between being adaptable, flexible, and resilient. When you develop your ability to adapt to changing circumstances, life becomes easier and more navigable.

Changing your mindset from one of being set in your ways to one where you are curious and seek out new experiences and information can open your world. We also discuss how adaptable people are able to see the entire playing field rather than focusing solely on the current moment and situation. This enables a growth mindset to flourish.

We share our personal trials and tribulations in adjusting and adapting both in “normal” times and during the distinct challenges of COVID-19. Hear us talk about building a business and momming during a global pandemic.

Being adaptable is a personality trait but it is also a skill. Listen in to hear all about ways to flex and improve your adaptability muscle, whether it’s by simply taking a new route to the coffee shop or by trying a new activity every month. There are a million ways to become more adaptable and give yourself the freedom to flow with the Universe.

GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK

This week we want you to get together with your bold partner and practice becoming more adaptable by one of the methods we talked about today.

Jump over to our IG or FB group and let us know what steps you are taking to become more adaptable - share pictures of you being adaptable and tag us @goboldlytogether

Reminder of a few ways you can practice:

Seek out other perspectives and ideas than you normally embrace
Start taking small risks every day - try a new brand of coffee, drive a different route to work, try a new makeup routine, wear a different color, try a new kind of food. Start small and build
Seek out other people to practice with and encourage them to embrace some kind of change
Learn a new skill in your field or in a totally separate field

8. THE POWER OF EXPECTATIONS AND PERSONAL RULES

45m · Published 03 Mar 11:39

Join us today as we talk about the power of personal rules and how we tend to suppress them. We’re both sharing some of the life boxes we’ve check off on our linear and nonlinear train.

Should, must, ought, and supposed to’s are statements with a common negative thinking pattern, or cognitive distortion, that can contribute to feelings of fear and worry. They also put unreasonable demands and pressure on ourselves, which can make us feel guilty or like we've failed.

Today we are giving you examples from our own journey of where this came into play.

We also touch on guilt and how this weighs us down. Guilt and shame can often be the result of misplaced “should” and society’s expectations, which we discuss. Stay tuned for another episode where we talk all about the mom guilt.

Discarding expectation means listening to your inner voice and silencing the rest. Truly tune in to your soul and do what it wants. Do what just feels right to you at that very moment.

This can be done by practicing mindfulness, evaluating the story you are telling yourself, letting go of fixed fantasies and so much more, which we share our own examples of today.

Dominating your own thought process can be scary. Risk taking can be scary. Learning how to get off the train can be scary, or not. It’s the ways of improving how we talk to ourselves that can be the real turning point to win!

All this, some mantras, and more on today’s show.

GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK

Write down the way you thought your life was supposed to be.

Write the story of your life. Get together with your Bold partner and exchange the stories.  Help each other look at the stories objectively and then identify the bullshit parts of them.  The lies in the stories.  Rip it up and throw it out.

Adopt a mantra when you hear the should, oughts, supposed to’s creep into your life. If it helps (and it will) write it out and post it somewhere.

7: WHY DO WORDS HAVE SO MUCH POWER

47m · Published 24 Feb 04:44

On today’s episode, we are talking all about words. This is something we have been discussing for a while, but not as loudly as we wanted. So, we now are digging deeper and sharing this important conversation with you today.

Tune in today to hear how words can create our reality, rather than reality creating our chosen words. We also share how our language is used and how this has been a life-long process for us.

According to an article in Psychology Today, from 2012 researchers have found that you need to replace every negative thought with at least 5 positive thoughts to counteract the effect on the brain.

The good news is that our thought patterns are habits, and habits can be changed.

We can rewire our brains, and our entire existence by changing the language we use to talk to ourselves and the people around us.

We can acknowledge the negative thoughts by saying no thank you and releasing.

We can also acknowledge the critical thoughts and use a mantra to help refocus on positive thoughts.

Language also impacts culture, both on a micro and macro level which we get into today.

How do you speak to your family?

How do you interact with your friends?

Once we key ourselves in to listening for the repetition of certain words, phrases, or ways of speaking about ourselves and the world it becomes much easier, but it is an active process not passive.

MENTIONED IN THE SHOW

"A broken bone can heal, but the wound a word opens can fester forever."

Jessamyn West

"If we understood the power of our thoughts, we would guard them more closely. If we understood the awesome power of our words, we would prefer silence to almost anything negative. In our thoughts and words, we create our own weaknesses and our own strengths. Our limitations and joys begin in our hearts. We can always replace negative with positive."

Betty Eadie

“By holding a positive and optimistic [word] in your mind, you stimulate frontal lobe activity. This area includes specific language centers that connect directly to the motor cortex responsible for moving you into action. And as our research has shown, the longer you concentrate on positive words, the more you begin to affect other areas of the brain.”

Newburg, Waldman

GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK

Start listening to your inner monologue more closely for negative framing and words. Start also listening to how you talk to other people about yourself. Are you repeatedly critical? Are you making yourself smaller?

Keep a notebook handy where you can write down the negative and limiting thoughts.

Pick one word or phrase from the list that you made and focus in on that specifically.

Think about words like can’t, only, just, and always.

You may find that you are noticing other people’s negativity now too. Probably not the best time to point it out.

Once you have that word use the tools we talked about today, or any of the suggestions in the further reading to work towards removing it from your lexicon.

6: THE PROS AND CONS OF THE TERROR BARRIER. DEALING WITH THE DARKNESS.

50m · Published 17 Feb 00:13

In today’s episode of We Go Boldly, we are talking about something different. Something we both have gone through and wanted to shed a light, bring awareness, and have a conversation about today.

The darkness aka the Terror Barrier is the feeling of fear and anxiety you experience when you’re about to push past your comfort zone in a major way. Tune in to hear our own personal anxieties and how we figure out how we can get passed.

The Terror Barrier works as an internal indicator of how much tension you are facing in the moment. When it’s in full effect, you are facing an extremely high amount of tension (for your own current capacity level). For many people, this is too much tension to handle and it shuts them down completely. They slide backward and allow their fears to prevent them from making any progress in their lives.

The Terror Barrier is the gatekeeper that separates you from the point-of-no-return of a major decision.

Challenges, or “terror barriers” based on our unconscious fears, can often erupt when we are working toward our goals and visions.

A terror barrier is an illusion.

Every fiber of our being wants us to turn back and throw in the towel, because the subconscious mind is always working to keep us safe and out of potential harm.

Here is where we need to hold firm.

Our problems are internal, not external. We have somehow labeled our situation as “bad,” and because we hold this energy, we hold resistance

Healthy fear vs. unhealthy fear

Not all fear is created equal and our responses should not be the same.

It is important is to know is the difference between discomfort and distress.

Discomfort should feel tolerable. When you are feeling discomfort, what you want to do should still feel exciting and like something you are looking forward to.

Distress, on the other hand, feels overwhelming and gets in the way of doing something that you want to do by impairing your ability.

Distress tends to feel consuming and overwhelming; you may even feel panicked or like you might die if you take the action.

Healthy Reasons to Push Through/Challenge Fear.

When the gain outweighs the pain.

When we are not willing to give up the thing that we are afraid of.

When we want to be free to do the things we want to do -- and don't want to be controlled by fear.

When to Listen to Fear and (Possibly) Stop Doing What Makes Us Afraid

Proving (yet again) that we can push through fear.

Proving an identity.

When the risk is not worth the reward.

How do we get through the terror barrier?

When problems or crises present themselves, understand that all problems are illusions. They come from the context we create around a situation that we decide we do not like.

Remember, change is inevitable.

The universe is on your side, not against you. Look for the greater seed of benefit.

Focus on getting into a state of flow. This is only acquired by being in the present moment. We cannot get there by being in our heads.

Reconfirm how you have dealt successfully before with terror barriers.

Set specific goals, rather than rely on a generic dream.

Take the first step toward your first goal.

Recognize the terror barrier and see it as a growth opportunity. Take satisfaction in widening your comfort zone, the opportunity to learn, and the progress toward your goals.

Start and end the day with gratitude.

GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK

Think about the last time you were scared or sensed the darkness.  How did you get through it?  How did you identify if it was healthy or unhealthy?

Do you have any big goals right now that you know fear is holding you back?  What are they?

If you have big goals and you know fear is getting in the way, what can you do to help work through it?

5: HOW DOES SHE HAVE TIME? COMPARISON SHAME.

54m · Published 09 Feb 16:01

Join us in today’s honest conversation all about comparison. We’re sharing our own personal stories of how we‘ve gotten caught in the comparison game, as well as some major key takeaways.

We’re also talking about shame versus guilt. Where guilt is useful to the extent that it helps enforce social norms and mores, shame is the deeply painful feelings of unworthiness and unacceptability, the lack of belonging.

We also talk about how temporal self-comparison can be useful to understand your own path, and how you can make changes. Here we share more about our recent photoshoot for our website and the different mindsets we had going into it.

Comparing yourself to others breeds resentment, disappointment, shame, and self-doubt, therefore it is so important to get out of your own head and start listening to that inner voice of yours.

When you look at the lives that other people are living, you are only seeing the surface and what they allow you to see. People are not honest about the entirety of their lives online, or in real life. If you are comparing yourself to what you see in others, then you are really comparing yourself to the ideal that has been presented, not the reality of their everyday life.

Life is not fair or equal. Comparison to others fails to account for this factor. Today we’re celebrating those little moments of cleaning the bathroom, fixing the sink, and making the bed! We’re finding joy in our small successes each and every day and want you to start doing the same!

All this and more on today’s comparison episode.

QUOTE WE LOVE

Propel Women, Christine Caine: “When we believe the lies of comparison, that’s where shame steps in—the fear of being unworthy. Shame makes us feel small, unwanted, and unloved. And together, comparison and shame will keep us from living the full, happy lives we’re destined to live.”

GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK

Before the next episode take this step…

Check in with your boldness partner. How are you both doing? Take time to listen to each other, connect, laugh, cry, whatever it is you need to do.

Together, set a timer for 10 minutes, and write down everything that you spend time comparing about yourself. Be honest. Is it your weight, money, job, dreams, children, spouses, degrees...whatever it is...the whiteness of your teeth? Write it down in one big crazy list.

Here are your next options.

Burn the list and do it again when you’re ready.
Read the list to your accountability partner and dig into it.

4: BUSTING THE MYTHS OF MOTIVATION AND DISCIPLINE

46m · Published 31 Jan 01:11

In today’s episode we are talking about the myths of motivation and discipline.

Motivation, discipline, and habit are three things we all know we need, but struggle with, and often get confused with each other.

Discipline is the stage just before habit. It takes discipline to develop a habit. It’s when we are forcing ourselves to do something, we don’t want to do, it doesn’t feel natural. It requires a thought process.

Motivation is overhyped. Motivation is kind of your why. People expect motivation will work as a magical elixir that will jump start your future.

The reality is that motivation comes and goes. It fluctuates depending on the circumstance.

We both have good days and bad which we share with you today.

What worked before will not always work. You can’t rely on natural motivation or discipline, so you need to create your own.

If you google motivation vs discipline, you will see arguments that you need one over the other.  You need to figure out what works for you.

Tune in today to hear how we motivate ourselves, our children and family. The steps we take as well as what keeps us all happy and motivated at the same time. Who we choose to surround ourselves with and the personal development work we do to help us achieve our end result? All this and more on today’s show.

GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK

Before the next episode take this step…

Identify one thing you want to do or habit you want to set.

Figure out what your motivation is. Both intrinsic and extrinsic.

Start.

3: GOAL SETTING WILL LEAD TO A HAPPIER LIFE

38m · Published 31 Jan 01:10

In today’s episode we are going to be talking about why goal setting is essential to living a more meaningful and happier life as well as all the distractions and disappointment that come along with this territory.

When you set a big goal, break it down into mini goals that are achievable and measurable, make sure that you set specific times to check in on progress and adjust as needed.

Frame your goal as a positive rather than a negative. Not to ignore the feeling but to frame the intended outcome.

We’re getting into examples such as this. I want to be my own boss and run a business vs I hate my boss and want to quit my job.

I want to feed my body healthy food more often vs. I want to stop eating so much junk food.

We want you to speak your goals out loud; to a friend, family, the universe, your religious leader etc…

Tune in as we share some of our own personal and professional goals as well as the steps, we each take to achieve them.

We’re also sharing our best tips and tricks when it comes to the planning and projecting and talking about giving yourself some grace in the meantime.

From obstacles to opportunity and resilience to celebrations, we’re diving right into this topic with you today.

GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK

Before the next episode take this step…

Set 1-3 goals, make sure that they are something you can measure, put a time limit on, and attain.

You want to ensure that you can reach some of your goals before we get to our next conversation, that builds excitement and motivation for the next round of goals.
