Before you can step out into the world of education, you have to spend time as a Pre-Service teacher learning from those ahead of you. Today on the podcast I am talking with Dr. Sam Fecich, a college professor for Pre-Service teachers. We talk about the fact that it is okay to change your career in education even if you always thought being in the classroom was your destiny. We also talk about her book, Edumagic, and all the different ways pre-service teachers (and, let's be honest, current teachers) can prepare for and improve their teaching skills.

I always ask teachers what their biggest pain points are when it comes to teaching and more specifically, organization. There are overarching themes I see day in and day out. One of the biggest being “where do I start?!?”

I always recommend starting small, with an area that is easy to organize in a matter of a few minutes and then working up to bigger things. Also, don’t feel like you have to reorganize your whole classroom in one weekend. It’s a gradual thing. It should be. Too much at once, especially while you're in a school year with kids, can be a lot to change everything at once.

So instead, I recommend starting with a few key areas that I will share today.

Today I am going to give you an excerpt from my course, Kickstart Your School Year. Now I know the school year has already started and yes, the course is designed to help you kick-start your year. But the things I talk about in the course are valuable at any time of the year. While I would always recommend you start your year out organized, sometimes it doesn’t happen but the good news is, you can do it even in the middle of the year! It may take a little bit longer and you might have to scale things down a bit, but it’s never too late to get started!

It’s been a while since you have heard from me and that is because Season 4 officially wrapped up with episode number 52. I am knee deep in prepping for Season 5 so I wanted to take a minute to share with you a few highlights from season 4 and let you know what is ahead for season 5! The excitement the new school year brings, especially for a first year teacher, can cause her to work long hours, go up on weekends, and work during breaks. All of those are fun things, but can quickly lead to burn out. Learn some of the signs of working too much (thus leading to burnout!) so you can set healthy boundaries for this school year.
