It's time for a Critical Conversation - the bigger picture of eating disorders and mental ill health

29m · Published 03 Sep 18:00

We're putting our critical thinking caps on for this episode of Candid Conversations! Social worker, graduate researcher and EDV Peer Mentoring Program Manager Rachael Duck joins Bree for an important conversation that will challenge listeners to think outside the box and look beyond an individual focus on health. Importantly, we invite you to think about the idea that eating disorders don't happen on their own, and that people's experiences are often tied to larger social and cultural forces. As Rachael likes to say, the personal is political!

The release of this episode aligns with Body Image and Eating Disorders Awareness Week 2023. As part of the theme 'The Time is Now to Take Action on Eating Disorders and Body Image', we are sharing lots of lived experience reflections, education resources and advocacy information on our socials. Make sure you're following us!

18m · Published 30 Apr 20:36

  • The impact of diet culture on her self-worth and acceptance
  • The impact of the diet-binge cycle, including fear, anger and shame
  • Challenging her belief system around food and bodies
  • Quasi-recovery
  • The role of ego and intuition in her recovery (via popular book, The Power of Now)

From Adolescent to Adult: Emily's story of navigating recovery on her own terms

25m · Published 12 Apr 20:23

Did you know that the majority of eating disorders occur between the ages of 12 and 25? This means that for many people with eating disorders, recovery also falls within the transition period from adolescence to adulthood. It's a time of huge change and growth, which, when coupled with an eating disorder, can be really overwhelming.

In this episode, we speak with Emily, a member of the EDV team who has lived experience of being diagnosed with an eating disorder in her late teens. Emily's recovery journey included both the adolescent and adult public health system. We discuss being diagnosed with an eating disorder while in Year 12, undergoing treatment while seeking independence from family/parents, choosing recovery as an adult and finding motivation, travelling, moving out of home, and creating a new life.

Huge thanks to Emily for sharing her story for this episode. As with all of our episodes that are driven by lived experience, we feel like there's something in here for everyone, even if this transition period that we're talking about doesn't directly relate to you. But if you know someone who is going through this particular time in their life, please feel free to pass this episode on!

Body image below the surface - a deep dive with Bridie.

25m · Published 02 Dec 19:46

For EDV's Education Officer Bridie, the topic of body image and body dissatisfaction in her eating disorder recovery was largely dealt with in "very lame platitudes" from well meaning health professionals. While Bridie recovered from her eating disorder, feelings of shame and discomfort around her body image lingered. Bridie was eventually compelled to confront her relationship with her body and begin a self-guided journey towards compassion and acceptance.Ā

In this chat we cover:

  • Bridie's journey to working at EDV
  • Bridie's lived experience of body dissatisfaction and eating disorder recovery
  • Why Bridie developed an online, self-guided course on body image for EDV's elearning platform, LearnED
  • Complex viewpoints and diversities in the body image space, including historical roots
  • Tips for unpacking and improving your relationship with your body
  • How to access the online course
