Hotdish Episode 3: A Chat With the Ladies of Cannon Belles Cheese

Welcome Introduction

Hello and welcome to episode 3 of HotDish, the Just Food Co-op podcast. I’m Vicki, your host and I am very excited to bring you the latests news from your member owned, democratically run cooperative grocer.

The purpose of this podcast is to keep the conversation going beyond the walls of our building. Just Food Co-op aims to be a meeting place for community and friends, where our stories can be heard and shared. Where there is an open line of communication about your food, where that food comes from, and how it is being used to nourish our town and its members.

Correction: Simply Voting is managing our election this year and as with all things new, there are sometimes glitches. The letter you receive with your ballot indicates that there is a pre-paid envelope included. This was the plan, but instead, the letters went out with a pre-addressed envelope without the postage paid. Simply Voting acknowledged the error immediately after realizing the issue, took responsibility and are significantly reducing our pricing as a result. If you prefer to vote via the paper ballot, you may of course put a stamp on the envelope if that is convenient, and mail it, or please bring your envelope to the Co-op, where we will place a stamp on your envelope for mailing. Thank you again for your patience and understanding!

Announcements: October is coming up and in addition to being “My Co-op Rocks” month, Health Literacy Month, Non-GMO month, Fair Trade Month, The Month of our Annual Meeting, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Bullying Prevention Month, United Way Month, Healthy Lungs Month, The Month of Halloween, The Month Where it Finally Feels like Fall, and Hunger Awareness Month -- It is also the month of our Member Drive. So, at the register, if you are not already a member, our cashiers will be asking you if you would like to become a member. We are offering a reusable bag, a coupon punch card, and a treat if you become a member during a member drive and we aim to add 25 new members during the month of October. So, if you are thinking of joining, October is the perfect time to do it.

Music Request: Just Food Co-op is looking for musicians and composers to create the music for Hotdish, The Just Food Co-op Podcast and we are looking to our talented community for interested parties. If you or anyone you know are interested in creating Intro., Outro. music, transition music and sounds, and stingers or any combination thereof please contact Vicki at [email protected] to register your interest.

Cooperative Principal of the Week:

Principle #3: Member's Economic Participation

Members contribute equally to, and democratically control, the capital of the cooperative. This benefits members in proportion to the business they conduct with the cooperative rather than on the capital invested.

Members are asked to pay a membership fee in order to join the co-op. This is usually a one-time investment but it can be spread out into a payment plan. The membership counts as stock in the company, which means you own part of Just Food Co-op from the moment you join.

Happenings:

Harvestfest/ Local Food Fair - October 7th

Vegan Food Tasting - October 14th

Annual Meeting - October 17th

Cooperative Principal of the Week :

Principle #2: Democratic Member Control

Cooperatives are democratic organizations controlled by their members—those who buy the goods or use the services of the cooperative—who actively participate in setting policies and making decisions.

We are currently seeing a demonstration of this democratic member control throughout this board election. You can also participate in the conversations surrounding Just Food Co-op by attending Coffee With the Board which is usually held the first Saturday of every month from 10am-12pm in the sitting area of Just Food Co-op.

All members are also invited to Monthly Board Meetings which are usually held on the third Thursday of every month. All that the board asks is that you email Sherri, the General Manager of the Co-op to be put on the agenda for the board meeting. Being put on the agenda just means that the Board knows that you are going to attend, and you must register to attend whether you simply want to sit in on a meeting or you have something to present to the board. All requests must be emailed to Sherri, the General manager at least one week in advance of the meeting you wish to attend. More information about attending the Board meeting can be found in the board section of the Just Food Co-op website.

Just Food Co-op practices open and democratic member control. All members are welcomed and encouraged to participate in making the Co-op

Hotdish Episode 1: Why A Podcast? Introduction of Hotdish to the Just Food Co-op Community

30m · Published 01 Sep 12:00

Episode 1:

Why A Podcast? Hispanic Heritage Month & Meet The Deli - Interviews with Adriana the Deli Manager + Cheese Chat with Lynda & Nancy the Meat and Cheese Assistants.

Welcome Introduction:

Hello and welcome to our first ever episode of Hotdish, the Just Food Co-op podcast. I’m Vicki, your host and I am very excited to bring you the latests news from your friendly neighborhood co-op.

Announcements: This is our first ever Just Food Co-op Podcast. This is a podcast in progress, and the format of the podcast will adjust to meet the needs of a particular week or subject area. Generally we are aiming for a 10-15 minute podcast that catches you up on what is happening at the store. We will also include stories from the community, vendors, farmers, and employees. There will be discussions with board members and the management team of the store. But, since we’re called Hotish, we also want to get the stories behind what’s happening as well as the story behind the food we’re selling.

Segment 1 - Story - Why a podcast? The story of this podcast. (Vicki)

I started at Just Food Co-op just under a year ago. At that time I was hired as the Social Media & Creative Coordinator. This meant that I was responsible for the online presence and voice of the co-op. As I was working with the concept of what the co-op sounded like, I started thinking about all of the voices I hear inside the store on a day-to-day basis. The buyers ordering over the phone, the deli department describing a use for a gourmet cheese, or a produce stocker raving about the new type of mango we now have in stock.

These are the voices and the conversations that get me excited to try new foods and use new ingredients. What I wanted to do is capture these conversations and get them out to the community. If you are a frequent shopper here, you know how knowledgeable our staff is and how helpful they are when you’re looking for something. What you don’t often get to hear is how these products came to be in the store. How were they chosen?

The other conversations that no one gets to hear are the ones between our buyers and our vendors and farmers. When the orchardist is excited about a new apple - when the local farmer is getting ready to harvest. These are the exchanges I hope to bring to you through this podcast.

I’ll also be discussing different cooperative tenants and principals in attempt to demystify what our co-op does and what we stand for.

So, tell me about what’s on your plate.

Co-op Principal of the Week:

Principle #1: Voluntary and Open Membership

Cooperatives are voluntary organizations, open to all people able to use its services and willing to accept the responsibilities of membership, without gender, social, racial, political or religious discrimination.

On the top of our bulletin board, on the outside of our building, there is a huge sign that says welcome in over 100 languages. We also proudly add the sentence “Everyone can shop, anyone can join” to as many promotional materials as possible. Everyday we work toward making the co-op a safe place where anyone can have access to affordable, nutritious food.

We believe Just Food is healthy food, that is local, sustainably produced, and strengthens communities.
