The Dr. Westin Childs Podcast

by Dr. Westin Childs

Do you feel like your thyroid is taking over your life? Are you suffering from symptoms like weight gain, hair loss, fatigue, brain fog, or mood swings? If so, you aren’t alone. In fact, millions of other thyroid patients in the United States and around the world suffer from the same issues. And these issues persist even in the face of normal treatment with thyroid medication! The question is: what can you do about it? That’s exactly what this podcast is about. I’m Dr. Westin Childs (D.O.) a former practicing osteopathic physician and my goal is to help thyroid patients get back to feeling 100%. Well, I actually have 2 goals: #1. The first is to help 1 million thyroid patients directly or indirectly. And #2. To create the most comprehensive and helpful thyroid resource for thyroid patients on the internet. I know just how debilitating thyroid disease can be and I also know that it is possible to take control of your life. One of the biggest problems with thyroid management is that we just don’t talk about it enough. This podcast changes that. We are going to discuss all sorts of topics ranging from thyroid management, the use of less talked about thyroid medications, opinions on emerging treatments and therapies from leading experts, the use of natural therapies and how they fit into the conventional model, and so much more. If you want more information aside from the standard thyroid treatment of TSH and levothyroxine then this is the place for you. We won’t just stop at your thyroid, either. Other topics that are relevant and important to thyroid function will be discussed including things like hormone balance, menopause, testosterone replacement therapy, and weight loss therapies. If something helps you to better manage your thyroid, improve your symptoms, lose weight, or balance your hormones then it’s something I want to include. For more information on me and why I do what I do check out my website here: www.restartmed.com If you have any questions or have a topic you want me to discuss please shoot me an email on my website to submit a request in the "contact" section!

Probiotics That FIX Hashimoto’s (3 Species That WORK)

7m · Published 21 Aug 21:57
Improving your gut health is one of the most important things you can do as a patient with Hashimoto’s. Targeting your gut can increase T4 to T3 conversion thereby providing your body with more T3, it can improve thyroid medication absorption, it can reduce inflammation, help you lose weight, and improve your overall health. Targeting your gut is a no-brainer and one of the easiest ways to do this is with the use of probiotics. But which probiotics are best? That’s exactly what we are going to be talking about today. #1. Soil-based organisms. These probiotic species come from the ground and we are no longer exposed to them due to the fact that we no longer drink well water and due to changes in our farming techniques. Soil based organisms have been shown to populate the intestinal tract which means they provide long-term benefit, they are long-lasting, they are heat stable, they can be used to treat conditions like SIBO, gas, distention, bloating, and more. Strains to look for: Bacillus coagulans, bacillus subtilis, bacillus clausii How much to use? 5-10 billion CFU. #2. Beneficial yeast. They are not the same as bakers yeast or candida. They don’t populate the gut like SBOs but they can help your body produce more immunoglobulins in the form of IgA. Beneficial yeast can be used to treat candida, mold, leaky gut, parasites, SIBO, and h. pylori. Strains to look for: Saccharomyeces boulardii How much to use? 3-5 billion CFU #3. Lactobacillus and bifidobacteria strains. These are great probiotics but they are not very stable. When using these species look for diversity or a high dose or both. Benefits: Improve digestion and nutrient absorption Supports immune health, microbiome health, and gut health Treats SIBO and IBS Species to look for: Lactobacillus acidophilus Bifidobacterium bifidum Lactobacillus brevis Bifidobacterium lactis #hashimoto #hashimotosthyroiditis #hashimotos #hashimotosdisease #probiotics #bacillus #thyroidtreatment Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ Recommended thyroid supplements to enhance thyroid function: - Supplements that everyone with hypothyroidism needs: https://bit.ly/3tekPej - Supplement bundle to help reverse Hashimoto’s: https://bit.ly/3gSY9eJ - Supplements for those without a thyroid and for those after RAI: https://bit.ly/3tb36nZ - Supplements for active hyperthyroidism: https://bit.ly/3t70yHo See ALL of my specialized supplements including protein powders, thyroid supplements, and weight loss products here: https://www.restartmed.com/shop/ Want more from my blog? How to Increase T4 Levels Naturally (WITHOUT Medication)

8m · Published 14 Aug 22:37
T4 is the most abundant thyroid hormone in the body by far. Roughly 80% of all thyroid hormone floating around in your body right now is in the form of T4. It may not be the most powerful, but it’s obviously very important to thyroid hormone regulation because your body can draw upon your T4 store to create various types of thyroid hormone as needed. If you are someone who is trying to optimize your thyroid function for better health or because you have hypothyroidism or Hashimoto’s, you should find this information on how to increase your T4 levels naturally very helpful: 1. Diet: Look for foods that are high in iron, tyrosine, and iodine as all 3 of these nutrients are needed for thyroid hormone production. #2. Food volume: Not only are the type of foods that you eat important but also the quantity or volume of food that you eat. Avoid calorie restricted diets if you are trying to increase your T4 level. You may paradoxically see an increase in T4 temporarily but this comes at the cost of low T3 which is not ideal. #3. Thyroid glandulars: Certain supplements, like thyroid glandulars, may help provide the building blocks that your body needs for T4. #4. Avoid alcohol: Alcohol is shown to be toxic to thyroid cells and even blunts the response of TSH from TRH. #5. Get more sleep & avoid stress: Both sleep and stress are needed for T4 production. Getting less than 7 hours each night is enough to see a decline in T4 levels. #6. Increase your intake of essentials fats and omega-3 fatty acids: Supplementation with vitamin D and omega 3 fatty acids may reduce your risk of Hashimoto’s by 22%. #7. Exercise: Exercise at 70% of your maximal heart rate has shown to have a positive impact on T4 levels and thyroid function more generally. Intensity is key 70% of maximal heart rate. While T4 is incredibly important so is T3. How Much Iodine Should You Take Each Day?

8m · Published 27 Jul 19:00
Iodine is critical for overall health, especially thyroid health. But the question is, how much should you be getting each day? This is an incredibly contentious topic because everyone seems to have a different opinion. What I’m going to do today is break down iodine dosing in a simple and easy-to-understand way so you understand how much you should be taking to minimize negative outcomes while maximizing positive ones. When you look at the RDA for iodine you’ll see that the recommended dosing should be between 150 and 270 (~300) mcg per day depending on whether or not you are a lactating woman or a pregnant woman. Those who are lactating or pregnant require more than the average adult because they need to make up for what a developing child needs. What happens when you don’t get enough iodine? You will end up with a goiter and hypothyroidism which is not ideal. What happens when you get too much? You increase your risk of developing autoimmune thyroid disease like Hashimoto’s and Graves’ disease. How can you prevent these conditions? By sticking to the optimal range of 150 to 300mcg per day of total iodine intake. This number takes into account your total iodine intake from ALL sources so make sure you account for hidden sources of iodine when determining your total intake. Hidden sources of iodine include beauty products, foods, supplements, and medications. If your total iodine intake is too high then you may benefit from temporarily reducing your iodine intake to metabolize the extra iodine out of your body. #iodine #nutrientdeficiencies #nutrition #thyroid #goiter #hypothyroidism #hashimoto #graves Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ Recommended thyroid supplements to enhance thyroid function: - Supplements that everyone with hypothyroidism needs: https://bit.ly/3tekPej - Supplement bundle to help reverse Hashimoto’s: https://bit.ly/3gSY9eJ - Supplements for those without a thyroid and for those after RAI: https://bit.ly/3tb36nZ - Supplements for active hyperthyroidism: https://bit.ly/3t70yHo See ALL of my specialized supplements including protein powders, thyroid supplements, and weight loss products here: https://www.restartmed.com/shop/ Want more from my blog? Hypothyroidism Diet Tips (FIX Your Thyroid With Food)

9m · Published 11 Jul 21:25
No matter how you look at it, your diet has the ability to negatively or positively impact thyroid function. Today I want to talk about what type of changes you can make to the foods that you eat to improve your thyroid if you have hypothyroidism. These tips and tricks will help your thyroid function more optimally so that you can not only produce enough thyroid hormone but also convert that thyroid hormone into its most active form. These tips are primarily targeted at those with hypothyroidism, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, low thyroid, and a sluggish thyroid. Tip 1: Find a whole food-based diet and stick to it for at least 90 days. It doesn’t really matter which diet you use but here are some of my favorites and some that I have personally recommended to thyroid patients in the past: whole30, elimination diet, keto, carnivore, paleo, AIP, and gluten-free/dairy-free/soy-free. Tip 2: Avoid calorie-restricted diets. It may be tempting to reduce your calories if you are trying to lose weight but it can be damaging to your thyroid if you do. Instead of using sustained and daily calorie restriction, focus more on intermittent and prolonged fasts. Tip 3. Eat to reduce inflammation. Foods can either be pro-inflammatory or anti-inflammatory in nature and you should focus on foods that reduce inflammation rather than promote it. Foods to eat include fruits, vegetables, non-processed healthy oils, fish, nuts, and seeds. Foods to eliminate include dairy, gluten, processed foods, seed oils, foods that personally trigger you, coffee, soy, and excessive amounts of goitrogens. Tip 4. Eat to increase certain nutrients. Thyroid patients have a higher demand for certain nutrients than the average population and you should focus on foods that are rich in the following: Zinc - oysters, beef Magnesium - pumpkin seeds and chia seeds Selenium - brazil nuts and tuna Iron - red meat or nuts Tyrosine - animal sources of protein Iodine - fish, yogurt Tip 5. Finally, realize that you may need more than just dietary changes. Things like exercise, the use of supplements, getting enough sleep, and stress management are all important as well. #thyroid #thyroiddiet #thyroiddietplan #thyroidweightloss #hypothyroidism #hashimoto #thyroidproblems Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ Recommended thyroid supplements to enhance thyroid function: - Supplements that everyone with hypothyroidism needs: https://bit.ly/3tekPej - Supplement bundle to help reverse Hashimoto’s: https://bit.ly/3gSY9eJ - Supplements for those without a thyroid and for those after RAI: https://bit.ly/3tb36nZ - Supplements for active hyperthyroidism: https://bit.ly/3t70yHo See ALL of my specialized supplements including protein powders, thyroid supplements, and weight loss products here: https://www.restartmed.com/shop/ Want more from my blog? These Armour Thyroid Ingredients Will Surprise You

7m · Published 14 Jun 19:32
Armour thyroid is one of the most popular natural desiccated thyroid medications on the market. For that reason, we are going to be taking a close look at both the inactive and inactive ingredients found inside of this thyroid medication to see what it’s actually made of. I plan to do this for all thyroid medications and if you’d like to see my previous video on levothyroxine ingredients you can find that here: When it comes to active ingredients, Armour thyroid contains the following: Standardized doses of T4 and T3 and non-standardized doses of T2, T1 (probably), and calcitonin. These are active hormones found inside of this medication. A non-standardized dose just means that it’s probably found in there but they don’t ensure any sort of level between lots. The inactive ingredients include calcium stearate, dextrose, microcrystalline cellulose, sodium starch glycolate, and opadry white. If you are having issues with Armour thyroid it is almost certainly due to the inactive ingredients as opposed to the active ingredients and the problem can usually be solved by simply switching to a different version of NDT. Aside from Armour, you can also look into NP thyroid as well as Adthyza which is a relatively new NDT medication. #hypothyroidism #hypothyroid #thyroid #thyroidtreatment #thyroidmedication Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ Recommended thyroid supplements to enhance thyroid function: - Supplements that everyone with hypothyroidism needs: https://bit.ly/3tekPej - Supplement bundle to help reverse Hashimoto’s: https://bit.ly/3gSY9eJ - Supplements for those without a thyroid and for those after RAI: https://bit.ly/3tb36nZ - Supplements for active hyperthyroidism: https://bit.ly/3t70yHo See ALL of my specialized supplements including protein powders, thyroid supplements, and weight loss products here: https://www.restartmed.com/shop/ Want more from my blog? Is Hashimoto’s Fatal? (The Answer May Surprise You)

6m · Published 07 Jun 20:16
Is Hashimoto’s considered a fatal disease? Technically, yes, but the reality is that most people will not die directly from Hashimoto’s. In order for this to happen you must neglect your health and thyroid for decades which is very unlikely to happen in developed countries like the United States. But does that mean you are free from risk if you have Hashimoto’s? Not at all. We know from twin studies that patients with hypothyroidism have a 50% increased risk of mortality compared to the average population and we also know that Hashimoto’s leads to hypothyroidism so this risk is likely relevant to patients with autoimmune thyroid disease as well. But what causes this risk? It’s not from the thyroid itself but from comorbidities that are associated with hypothyroidism. These conditions include: 1. An increase in cancer risk. 2. An increase in cardiovascular disease. 3. And an increased risk of obesity which leads to metabolic syndrome, diabetes, hypertension, stroke, and insulin resistance. This may sound daunting but there’s some really good news here: You don’t have to accept this risk because you can completely bring your risk back to normal by optimizing thyroid function. You can do this either by taking thyroid medication or by using natural therapies. #thyroid #hypothyroidism #hashimoto #hashimotosthyroiditis #hashimotosdisease #hashis #mortality Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ Recommended thyroid supplements to enhance thyroid function: - Supplements that everyone with hypothyroidism needs: https://bit.ly/3tekPej - Supplement bundle to help reverse Hashimoto’s: https://bit.ly/3gSY9eJ - Supplements for those without a thyroid and for those after RAI: https://bit.ly/3tb36nZ - Supplements for active hyperthyroidism: https://bit.ly/3t70yHo See ALL of my specialized supplements including protein powders, thyroid supplements, and weight loss products here: https://www.restartmed.com/shop/ Want more from my blog? How to Prevent Hashimoto’s (The Genetics Connection)

11m · Published 30 May 22:11
Is Hashimoto’s a genetic condition? The short answer is yes but what’s key here is that just because you may have the underlying genetics associated with developing Hashimoto’s doesn’t guarantee that that the disease state will manifest in your body. And this is key. Understanding this genetic component will allow you to live your life in such a way as to avoid certain factors which have the potential to trigger Hashimoto’s. This means you can either a) prevent Hashimoto’s or b) treat your condition upstream if it’s already present. The genes and endogenous factors associated with Hashimoto’s include: - HLA class DR3 and DR5 (there are many others but these are most common) - CTLA4 receptor - PTN22 - Female sex - Pregnancy - Skewed X Chromosome inactivation These by themselves are not enough to trigger the disease, though, as they must be combined with exogenous or environmental factors as well. The environmental factors that trigger these genes include: - High-dose iodine exposure - Infections - Cytokines - Environmental toxicants like EDCs, heavy metals, and radiation The key here is not to focus on your genes because you can’t change those but to instead focus on what sort of things you put your body into contact with. By controlling these environmental factors you can actually influence your risk of developing Hashimoto’s in a positive way. #hashimoto #hashimotosthyroiditis #hashimotosdisease #hashimotos #thyroid #hypothyroidism #genetics Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ Recommended thyroid supplements to enhance thyroid function: - Supplements that everyone with hypothyroidism needs: https://bit.ly/3tekPej - Supplement bundle to help reverse Hashimoto’s: https://bit.ly/3gSY9eJ - Supplements for those without a thyroid and for those after RAI: https://bit.ly/3tb36nZ - Supplements for active hyperthyroidism: https://bit.ly/3t70yHo See ALL of my specialized supplements including protein powders, thyroid supplements, and weight loss products here: https://www.restartmed.com/shop/ Want more from my blog? Levothyroxine Ingredients: These May Surprise You

6m · Published 22 May 17:59
Ever wonder what is actually in levothyroxine? This medication is one of the most prescribed medications in the United States and yet so many people have no idea what they are actually consuming every day. Understanding what’s in this medication is important because some of the ingredients may be causing you problems. When it comes to thyroid medications there are two types of ingredients you should be aware of: 1. Active ingredients And 2. Inactive ingredients The active ingredients are usually not the problem for most thyroid patients because this component is dose dependent. You are either taking enough or you aren’t. But this isn’t true for the inactive ingredients. These ingredients can cause hypersensitivity reactions regardless of the dose and may lead to a host of symptoms. The active ingredients found in levothyroxine include: thyroxine. The inactive ingredients include: magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, colloidal silicone dioxide, sodium starch glycolate, and color additives depending on the strength and dose you are taking. If you are not doing well on your thyroid medication then take a look at these ingredients and see if they are causing issues. If they are, you may benefit from switching to a cleaner thyroid medication like Tirosint. #thyroid #hypothyroidism #hashimoto #thyroidproblems #thyroidmedication #thyroidtreatment #thyroidawareness Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ Recommended thyroid supplements to enhance thyroid function: - Supplements that everyone with hypothyroidism needs: https://bit.ly/3tekPej - Supplement bundle to help reverse Hashimoto’s: https://bit.ly/3gSY9eJ - Supplements for those without a thyroid and for those after RAI: https://bit.ly/3tb36nZ - Supplements for active hyperthyroidism: https://bit.ly/3t70yHo See ALL of my specialized supplements including protein powders, thyroid supplements, and weight loss products here: https://www.restartmed.com/shop/ Want more from my blog? The DANGERS Of Thyroid Antibodies (They Hurt More Than Your Thyroid)

7m · Published 18 May 17:24
Many thyroid patients with autoimmune thyroid disease like Hashimoto’s and Graves’ don’t realize this but the antibodies that cause thyroid problems (that are associated with these disease states) also cause problems in other tissues in your body. These antibodies are like heat-seeking missiles that target various proteins and receptors in your thyroid gland which results in abnormalities in thyroid function as well as thyroid gland damage. We are also learning that these antibodies can cause harm and damage to other tissues as well depending on which antibody you have present in your body. Let’s go over each antibody and the problems they can cause: Thyroid peroxidase antibody: - Hashimoto’s encephalitis - Infertility - Vasculo-placental complications - Health in aged women - Increased cancer incidence in breast, colon, kidney, and uterus - Decreased survival rate in breast cancer patients Thyroglobulin antibody: - Infertility - Increased cancer incidence of breast, colon, kidney, and uterus - Decreased survival rate in breast cancer patients Thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor antibody: - Graves’ orbitopathy - Graves’ dermatopathy - Increased cancer incidence of breast, colon, kidney, uterus, and ovary #hashimoto #hashimotosthyroiditis #hashimotosdisease #graves #gravesdisease #hypothyroidism #hyperthyroidism #thyroid Download my free thyroid resources here (including hypothyroid symptoms checklist, the complete list of thyroid lab tests + optimal ranges, foods you should avoid if you have thyroid disease, and more): https://www.restartmed.com/start-here/ Recommended thyroid supplements to enhance thyroid function: - Supplements that everyone with hypothyroidism needs: https://bit.ly/3tekPej - Supplement bundle to help reverse Hashimoto’s: https://bit.ly/3gSY9eJ - Supplements for those without a thyroid and for those after RAI: https://bit.ly/3tb36nZ - Supplements for active hyperthyroidism: https://bit.ly/3t70yHo See ALL of my specialized supplements including protein powders, thyroid supplements, and weight loss products here: https://www.restartmed.com/shop/ Want more from my blog?
