Back to School(?!?) with Teacher, Activist, & People Mag's "Sexiest Teacher Alive," Nicholas Ferroni

42m · Published 14 Sep 06:00

Going back to school is the topic hot on everyone's minds right now… and whether you're a mom or not, everyone seems to have an opinion. On one hand, we hear that we may be damaging our children (both educationally & emotionally) by restricting their socialization. On the other hand, we hear from experts and teachers across the country who say there is no possible way to return to school safely.

We’re joined today by Nicholas Ferroni, a high school history teacher from Union, NJ who has a thing or two to say on the matter… and there’s no one whose opinion we value more. Why? Nicholas has been noted as one of the "100 Making a Difference” and one of the "Most Influential Educators In America;” he was named "Upstander of the Year" by the Human Rights Campaign for his work with LGBTQ youth; he designed a social experiment on the important of gender equality in politics that Whoopi Goldberg called “the best social experiment ever” (no big deal!)... oh and he was named the Sexiest Teacher Alive by People Magazine - CASUAL!!

Nicholas is a walking, talking example of that which he preaches… he is a social activist who educates, mentors and inspires students causing them to not only BE inspired & to INSPIRE OTHERS. We’re grateful he’s here today to inspire us, and shed some light on this sticky topic from his view on the front lines of the conversation.

Following the explosive controversy surrounding the F-Factor diet program, Tanya Zuckerbrot went on IG Live last weekend with a statement to… set the record straight? It left many feeling at best dissapointed & confused... at worst hurt, offended,& outraged. Off the Gram began covering this story last week when we interviewed whistleblower Emily Gellis along with a former client named Liz, and Lauren Slayton, founder of Foodtrainers and a renowned dietician.

Today, we unpack all that's transpired this week - and pose the question “what now??” - as this story continues to blaze through the wellness community. First, we're joined by Erin Seidl aka @FoodScienceBabe and re-joined by Lauren Slayton of Foodtrainers to discuss the "guar gum" debate (#guargate!!).

Next, we chat with a young woman known as @WellnessAlexis, who found herself an unlikely pawn in this week's "installment" of this scandal. And finally, we get an expert analysis of how this is all being handled from a PR perspective from Stacey Heuser, co-founder of leading PR agency, Narrative. This show's a doozy, friends... buckle up and tune in!

Emily Gellis & The F-Factor Drama: When "Wellness" Goes Wrong

1h 13m · Published 04 Sep 06:00

When influencer & entrepreneur Emily Gellis posted a personal opinion about the F-Factor diet program to her 100k+ followers earlier this year, she had no idea the can of worms she’d be opening up… or that she’d ultimately pivot her entire life to that of a crusader. What started as an innocuous social post turned her into a modern day Erin Brokovich… Emily received thousands of messages documenting people’s adverse reactions - both physically & mentally - as a byproduct of the following the diet or consuming the products. So Emily started sharing it all… the good, the bad, and the ugly. The situation snowballed, and when the story landed in the New York Times and then the TODAY show, Emily vowed to see this through to the end for the victims.

Emily shares her story with us on today’s episode, along with two other guests: Liz, a former client of the practice who shares a jarring & heartbreaking story; and Lauren Slayton, founder of Foodtrainers(™) a New York City consultancy dedicated to weight management and sports nutrition. Lauren holds a Masters Degree in Clinical Nutrition from New York University, and she helps us dig a little deeper into the question on everyone’s minds: what the hell is going on here??

“Wellness is Only for Rich White People” and Other Popular Lies with TV’s Nicole Young

56m · Published 31 Aug 06:00
Wellness and race. It’s a topic we could cover all day long and still only scratch the surface but we’ll continue to try. Today we’re joined by lifestyle expert, Nicole Young, who makes her living sharing tips, tricks & recipes for healthy living on TV but often times she found the she’d be overlooked for “healthy cooking” segments, or bypassed by brands for clean eating campaigns and she had to ask herself “why?” The result? Nicole uncovered a bias against Women of Color as it pertains to wellness, and has made it a personal crusade to change that narrative.

Eat Clean to... Play Dirty with Sakara Life Founders: Danielle DuBoise and Whitney Tingle

1h 4m · Published 24 Aug 06:00

We keep hearing that we should “eat clean”. But, what does that even mean? If we scrub our cookie boxes and chip bags with soap and water before we eat them, is that clean?! And... Why do we even need to “eat clean”? I thought a little dirt was good for the immune system? And, why is organic food so expensive? Sure, sure, we have all seen the models pictured eating their Sakara salads backstage at fashion shows in all the magazines, but do “real people” actually eat that stuff? Can a SALAD be filling?! Can it even taste good if it’s good for you? While team OTG is lucky enough to know first hand that Sakara makes the most delicious AND nutritious food on the planet, we realize the whole world doesn’t… YET.

So, we are THRILLED to bring the RADIANT gorgeous mama founders, Whitney Tingle and Danielle DuBoise, on the show to enlighten us all as to how and why they founded their clean eating empire, Sakara Life. Tell it to us straight, ladies: WHY should we all be eating clean, and HOW can we learn to play dirty?!

Whitney and Danielle have graciously offered all of our listeners a $50 gift towards your first Sakara Life Organic Meal Delivery, valid for new customers only, through September 24, 2020.

Olympian Rachael Adams on Putting Down Dairy to Pick Up Your Health

1h 0m · Published 17 Aug 06:00

In 2018, Switch4Good - a PSA campaign aimed at informing people about the health risks associated with dairy products - launched with a commercial during the closing ceremony for the Olympics. Unbelievably, the ad was yanked from the air before it reached the West Coast following complaints by the dairy industry. Luckily, they fought their way back to become one of the foremost nonprofits advocating for a healthy plant-based diet, reaching more than 95 million people in just the past six months.

We’re joined by Rachael Adams, Olympic Volleyball player and Switch4Good ambassador, to chat about the initiative and how nixing dairy changed her life… and how she’s inspired other athletes to do the same.

“Should I Block My Boss?” and other quandaries, with TV’s Mara Schiavocampo

48m · Published 20 Jul 06:00

Mara Schiavocampo is a 4x Emmy-Award winning journalist who made her mark on shows like Good America and TODAY. But it was her personal journey to wellness that had the biggest impact on her life, and after losing 90 pounds and overcoming Binge Eating Disorder, Mara found that wellness was her new passion… especially after having her two adorable kiddos and wanting to be the best role model possible. Her passion fueled her, and today, she shares wellness trends on shows like Dr. Oz, and her own popular podcast, The Trend Reporter.

Along the way, Mara struggled with conflicting feelings: was she a “serious journalist” or did she want to be a “lifestyle expert” & beacon of all things wellness? We can all relate to the feeling of being torn between our professional self and our personal persona, and social media makes it that much more pronounced. Knowing every post could be viewed by your friends - OR YOUR BOSS! - how do we balance the image we “put on” for work with the image we “put out there” for the rest of the world to see? Mara helps us dive in!
