What About Toxic Shame? Powerful Strategies to Help With Addiction in the Family GUEST: Jeff Jones

EMOTIONAL SAVVY: The Relationship Help Show

What About Toxic Shame? Powerful Strategies to Help With Addiction in the Family G

GUEST: Jeff Jones, therapist, addiction counselor, interventionist, and family recovery coach.

---------------------------------------------

DR. RHOBERTA SHALER: How to Give Up, Give Back, and Recover From Shame

Have you ever felt shame? Been shamed? If you haven't, you've been extremely fortunate. Most people have. Shame is when someone does their best to make you feel small, unimportant, unworthy, and a waste of space and breath. Nasty behavior!

You've been guilty of something, for sure. You did put your hand in the cookie jar, right?

Guilt, in my books, is simply a verdict. NOT A FEELING! Turning it into a feeling, to my mind, is something that was "invented" to allow some people to have power over you. To keep you feeling "less than," wrong, not good enough.

Guilt? You are guilty of doing something, or you're not. You're sorry, or you're not. You fix it if you can. You regret it if you cannot. Then, DROP IT!

Shame, though, is when someone else suggests YOU are a mistake. Know this, for sure, that it had nothing to do with you. A person who shames another is a person who is very insecure, sometimes unstable, and definitely experiencing needs for power and control. S/he likely feels badly about themselves, but takes it out on you. IT WAS NOT YOUR FAULT!

Toxic shame, though, is when you take up repeating the words of a toxic shamer and repeating--and unfortunately, believing--that they are true. You take up where the shamer left off, and you never ever give yourself a break! Fortunately, you can stop this.

In today's episode, Dr. Shaler gives you insights and strategies for dumping guilt and stopping shame, and recovering well from it to have your best life, and relationships, possible. Listen! Don't go another minute being hard on yourself.

GUEST: Jeff Jones, Licensed Professional Counselor, Addiction Counselor, and Certified Intervention Professional

Jeff is a therapist, addiction counselor, interventionists, and family recovery coach working online with families with an addicted loved one. He's expanded the context of addiction and created a three-phase program that empowers families to safeguard their loved one in an addictive cycle or recovery, while they engage in a process to stop the addiction cycle in this generation.

After putting it online and wrapping a user-friendly online community around it, Jeff is moving towards his goal of empowering families to connect with like-minded people, family-specific resources, and expertise when they are ready.

HIGHLIGHTS OF TODAY'S EPISODE:

  • Why timing is such a big issue in the recovery process
  • Why a "recovery message" is important to create
  • Understanding how not to marginalize or isolate the person in recovery
  • The importance of knowing the natural recovery process
  • How to be aware of warning signs of addiction

Listen to understand why Jeff says, "I'd rather see you sit in an AA/NA meeting in resistance than not being in the room at all."

This episode brings a new topic to Emotional Savvy, as well as a refreshing and different perspective on abundance, prosperity, and the links to health on every level.

DR. RHOBERTA SHALER: Prosperity Starts Between Your Ears

Sometimes, people are surprised when I talk about prosperity and relationship in the same sentence or breath. They simply haven't connected the two. Today, I'm talking about where prosperity is actually created: between your ears. And, then, how that actually plays out in your daily life.

Prosperity is much more than money or success, right? So is abundance! I'm offering you some clear examples and strategies you can use immediately to create prosperity in your life, AND, in your relationships.

Do you know what you actually want? What would make you happy? Or, are you focused on what isn't working, and is making you miserable? These mindset shifts that help you create the prosperity you want are ones you can make immediately. Really!

You are powerful--no matter what some Hijackal has tried to tell you--and what you think most about is what you will create more of. That's why I wrote What You Pay Attention to Expands in 2002. It's still available on Amazon, too.

Gather these insights, and use these strategies. Use the one's from today's guest, Jolen Philbrook, to create powerful shifts in your body and in your life.

Love, Dump, Or...? What About Radical Acceptance? GUEST: Andrea Miller

53m · Published 09 Aug 18:28

EMOTIONAL SAVVY: The Relationship Help Show

Love, Dump, Or, ...? What About Radical Acceptance?

GUEST: Andrea Miller, CEO of YourTango.com, author of Radical Acceptance

DR. RHOBERTA SHALER: How Do You Create and Experience Acceptance in Your LIfe?

You want to be seen, heard, known, acknowledged, appreciated, and accepted in life. By your parents. By your partner. By others in your world. Not everyone is willing or capable of doing that. I've written about this more in my book, Kaizen for Couples.

Where does that acceptance that you long for come from? In today's episode, I'm talking about finding acceptance for yourself, within. That's where it starts as a adult. Hopefully, you received it as a child, but many people simply didn't. Your brain was somewhat undeveloped, and you took in ideas about yourself and your worth from people who could not see you, in all your beauty. Maybe, they had problems of their own.

Now is the time to become your own best friend, and I give you insights into how to become accepting of yourself so that you feel secure and feel confident within yourself every day. It begins with acceptance.

When you begin to experience it from within, you'll be surprised how things can change in your world. Listen to these vital ideas. Yes, vital! They keep you feeling alive!

GUEST: GUEST: Andrea Miller, CEO of YourTango.com, author of Radical Acceptance

Andrea Miller is the founder and CEO of YourTango.com, the leading digital publisher dedicated to love, relationships, and self-empowerment. Andrea recently made her debut as an author with her first book, Radical Acceptance: The Secret to Happy, Lasting Love, published by Simon and Schuster. Quite an accomplishment for a first time author!

"You can't cherry pick the qualities you like or love in someone," she says, "It's the whole package. You have to make peace with those challenging qualities and attempt to extend empathy and compassion to them, or get out. You cannot be in a healthy relationship where you are constantly trying to change someone."

Of course, I asked Andrea if she was suggesting you can just decide to love someone unconditionally, no matter how badly they behave. There are folks who actually believe that, you know. You'll want to hear her answer!

HIGHLIGHTS OF TODAY'S EPISODE:

  • What should you do if you are in a toxic relationship and feel you are to blame?
  • How do you know when to terminate a relationship?
  • How do you know when you love enough about a person to accept what you don't love?
  • What can I do about toxic people at work? (Remember, Andrea runs a large enterprise, and she knows!)
  • I'm told about unconditional love, and now I'm confused. How do I get clear?
  • How does Radical Acceptance help someone in a difficult, toxic relationship?

This episode brings a new topic to Emotional Savvy, as well as a refreshing and different perspective on creating enriching, healthy, empowering relationships.

Intimacy, Pleasure, and How to Get More of Both GUEST: Rabbi Manis Friedman

Intimacy, Pleasure, and How to Get More of Both

GUEST: Rabbi Manis Friedman, author of The Joy of Intimacy, and Doesn't Anyone Blush Anymore?

DR. RHOBERTA SHALER: Creating and Enriching Emotional Intimacy with your Partner

"The deepest principle of human nature is the craving to be appreciated." ~ William James

Emotional intimacy allows you to feel appreciated--and known, seen, heard, accepted, and acknowledged, too. When that is not present in a relationship, you don't feel fully connected and secure. There is insufficient emotional intimacy.

The first--and most important--step towards creating emotional intimacy is to know yourself well. That means spending time with yourself and digging deep.

"As long as we are looking outside ourselves for intimacy, we will never have it and we will never be able to share it. In order to be intimate with another person, we have to know who we are, what we feel, what we think, what our values are, what is important to us, and what we want. If we do not know these things about ourselves, we can never share them with another person." ~ Ann Wilson Shaef

In today's episode, Dr. Shaler offers insights into creating emotional intimacy, and how to make it safe to be emotionally intimate.

GUEST: Rabbi Manis Friedman, author of The Joy of Intimacy, and Doesn't Anyone Blush Anymore?

Rabbi Friedman is a world-renouwned author, counselor, teacher, and speaker, well-known for his provocative and incisive wit and wisdom. His international speaking tour, seminars, and retreats take him around the world. He has been featured in many publications, such as The New York Times, Rolling Stone, and Publishers Weekly.

Rabbi Friedman is the author of the new book, The Joy of Intimacy: A Soulful Guide to Love, Sexuality, and Marriage. He has been counseling and teaching about relationships and marriage to audiences around the world for more than forty years, and he is here for you today.

HIGHLIGHTS OF TODAY'S EPISODE:

  • What is intimacy and how is it developed?
  • How can it be enriched?
  • If you're in a troubled relationship, how do you know to leave?
  • What about unconditional love?
  • What about the idea that love is a decision?
  • How can you get more pleasure in your relationship?

What About Unconditional Love and Creating Peace in Relationships?

GUEST: Swami Sadashiva Tirtha, The Orange Cowboy, host of the TV show, Talking with Our Angels

DR. RHOBERTA SHALER: Four Scary Reasons Unconditional Love May be a Dangerous Myth

"Wait! Don't run away. I'm not taking away the idea of unconditional love. Hear me out...please. "

~ Dr. Rhoberta Shaler

In today's episode, Dr. Shaler steps way out to talk about something you may have thought about in this way: unconditional love. You might immediately think,

"Why is she talking about unconditional love as a possibly dangerous myth? I love the idea of unconditional love." Yes, so does she, however, in the contexts she is talking about it is really worthwhile to re-think the idea, and understand it more fully.

Unconditional love can be both beautifully freeing, and sadly entrapping. So important to recognize these possibilities. Ask yourself,

"Has anyone ever blamed me or tried to make me feel guilty for something I may or may not have said or done by saying to me 'You're so judgmental. I thought you believed in unconditional love?'"

That is VERY telling...especially if they succeeded and you felt guilty! So, please hear Dr. Shaler out on this to see what you might take from this short segment.

GUEST: Swami Sadashina Tirtha, The Orange Cowboy, Host of Talking With Our Angles, Best-selling author of the Ayurveda Encyclopedia

Swami 's speaking clients include the White House Alternative Medicine Commission, and Johns Hopkins University. Swami has more than four decades of teaching wellness and consciousness.

At the age of ten, he began having spiritual experiences that altered his live in divine ways. Swami survived a devastating tragedy at the age of seventeen by seeking spiritual pathways, which led him to discover his mission of spreading joy.

He is sought after by conscious leaders and their teams. How he helps is by strengthening leaders' connection with their angels. Clients report rediscovering their joy, authenticity, and better decision-making. Swami's mission is to help create world peace. He is targeting his first movie--a comedy about listening to your heart and trusting your authenticity--to have global impact.

Swami teaches people how to communicate with their inner voice, or God, or angels--which ever word you prefer. The first relationship is the one with yourself. When you love yourself and hear your highest guidance, all other relationships and career visions flow smoothly.

Creating a Safe Place to Love Yourself GUEST: Pernilla Lillarose

49m · Published 18 Jul 00:03

EMOTIONAL SAVVY: The Relationship Help Show

with Rhoberta Shaler, PhD, The Relationship Help Doctor

Creating A Safe Place To Love Yourself...and Doing It

GUEST: Pernilla Lillarose, Hakomi Therapist, Self-Love Mentor, and Founder of Young Women Empowerment Circle

DR. RHOBERTA SHALER:

In today's episode, Dr. Shaler talks about what the term, "self-love" really means. We hear it spoken of so frequently that we may not think about what it actually means. It's not about being vain, arrogant, conceited, or self-centered. It's a very positive thing...when done in the light of what Rhoberta says today!

"I remember when I would say anything positive, or good about myself. My mother would say, "That's conceited. Don't brag." I was left to wonder if it was some terrible sin to say I did well on a science test. Am I not supposed to mention anything I do well? I wondered how this all worked. Maybe you were raised with that big question, too. Very confusing!"

If this is at all familiar, listen in to recognize and realize that's all changed. It's healthy to have self-love, and it's the only thing that can help you find and enjoy healthy relationships, too. There is a new way of looking at self-love, and it's important to see it, enjoy it, and live fully expressing as a result.

GUEST: Pernilla Lillarose, Hakomi Therapist

Pernilla shows women who feel unfulfilled inside how to stop compromising themselves and pleasing others. She helps them trust what they already know, so they can act from wisdom and power and step out of situations where they are not living their own deepest truth.

She is a Certified Hakomi Therapist, Self Love Mentor and Meditation Teacher and founder of Young Women Empowerment Circle. She is the author of numerous books relating to Self Love, Kindness and living in alignment with you who truly are. She also offers online classes about the global impact of True Self Love.

During this episode, Pernilla talks about the importance of feeling love vs. hearing someone say they love you. That's HUGE!

From a difficult childhood, Pernilla learned what it takes to actually feel loved, and to allow yourself to be loved, too.

Here's some interview highlights:

  • What is the distinction between hearing "I love you" and actually feeling loved
  • What does it take to "feel filled up" with love
  • Why listening to yourself is essential to loving self-care
  • Is it possible you're not allowing yourself to have your feelings, and truly feel into them?
  • How anger can be your ally

How Personal Trauma Gave Rise to Strength, Courage, and Empowering Others GUEST: Tracy Malone

How Personal Trauma Gave Rise to Strength, Courage, and Empowering Others

GUEST: Tracy Malone, All around amazing woman, and founder of NarcissistAbuseSupport.com

DR. RHOBERTA SHALER:

In today's episode, Dr. Shaler talks about "Gaslighting." It's a real thing. When someone else wants to tell you what you think, feel, intend, or have done, and they insist they are right, there's a very good chance that they are gaslighting you.

Gaslighting leads to second-guessing yourself, and questioning your sanity.

  • "Can I be mistaken about what actually happened to me?"
  • "Do I remember that incident so wrongly/"
  • "What's happening to my mind? I swear it didn't happen that way?"
  • "I think you're re-writing my history, and it's confusing."

Ever felt that way? Thought those things? You may have been gaslighted by a toxic, manipulative person looking for power over you. Learn the finer points of this is today's episode.

GUEST: Tracy Malone, All around amazing woman, and founder of NarcissistAbuseSupport.com

A traumatic series of life events─including being thoughtlessly discarded by her partner─thrust Tracy Malone into a personal downward spiral. As she sought the answer to, “Why me?”, she discovered that she had been a victim of narcissist

Like many, before that moment, Tracy had no idea about the personality disorder known as narcissism. So she began to study it voraciously. Today, passionate about raising awareness on the subject, she is excited to share the empowering story of how she turned her life around in an effort to help others do the same. Tracy’s inspirational and humorous presentations leave your audience with a deeper understanding of narcissistic behaviors and how they can thrive after experiencing such difficult and troubled relationships.

An expert on destructive relationships, Tracy’s Narcissist Abuse Support website offers resources to victims from more than 145 countries

Realizing that you attracted a Hijackal® and, although you didn't like his behavior, it somehow seemed familiar, is a common story among many. You become the "unwitting prey" of Hijackal predators. When you begin to realize that your family set a pattern of behavior and expectations, and you didn't see it before, it's a HUGE WAKE-UP CALL!

During this interview, we discuss the distinctions between being helpful and enabling. BIG!

So many points you are wise to recognize; seeing the red flags that were somehow excused earlier in the relationship. We talk about why they can be easy to miss, and how we rationalize and excuse them. THEN, what it takes to step away, and see all this from a more empowering, wise perspective. Tracy certainly had to do that when the reality of the behavior of her ex made escaping these realizations impossible.

Here's some interview highlights:

  • How do you deal with the "new supply" that a narcissistic person requires?
  • What role does co-dependency play in the Hijackal equation?
  • How gaslighting plays out in real life situations
