Is The Defense Of Karen Read Getting Desperate To Paint A Conspiracy Story?

6m · Published 17 May 17:00
In this episode of 'Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski,' psychotherapist and author Shavaun Scott discusses the ongoing trial of Karen Read, focusing on the defense's efforts to link a distant event from 22 years ago to a conspiracy theory in the present case. The defense highlighted a past incident involving a witness, who had helped his friend Chris Albert during a physical altercation, suggesting that this historical loyalty might imply a propensity to cover up a murder for Albert decades later. Scott critiques this strategy as highly implausible and examines the psychological state of another key figure, Karen Read, at the time of the incident. The conversation covers the complexities of interpreting actions and statements made under extreme stress and intoxication, questioning the reliability of such evidence in establishing guilt. Scott emphasizes the role of alcohol in clouding judgment and complicating the legal assessments of the case.
Main Points of the Conversation
- The defense attempts to connect a 22-year-old altercation to a potential conspiracy in the murder case, using the loyalty shown in the past as a basis for suspicion.
- Discussion of the psychological and emotional state of Karen Read during and after the incident, highlighting the impact of alcohol and stress.
- Analysis of the challenges in discerning truth when a suspect is under significant emotional distress and intoxication.
- Shavaun Scott suggests that alcohol played a significant role in the incident, potentially leading to tragic but unintentional consequences.
- The episode also discusses the limitations of courtroom strategies that rely on distant past events to prove current motives or behaviors, emphasizing the need for expert witness testimonies to provide clearer insights.

Chad Daybell Told His Followers That JJ Would Die Soon, Will It Cost Him His Life?

5m · Published 17 May 15:00
In the latest episode of 'Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski,' former Felony Prosecutor and attorney Eric Faddis discusses new developments in the Chad Daybell trial. The focus shifts increasingly toward Chad's influence and control over the events, contradicting earlier beliefs that Lori Vallow was the primary instigator. Testimony from Zulema Pastenes highlighted the ongoing belief in supernatural powers, such as controlling the weather, which adds complexity to the case against Daybell. The narrative emerging from the trial paints a picture of Chad as a central figure in promoting dangerous beliefs, which were used to manipulate those around him, including justifications for horrific actions like the foretold deaths of children.
Key points from the conversation:
- The evolving narrative places Chad Daybell more centrally in the manipulation and control within his and Lori's circle.
- Zulema Pastenes’s testimony about believing in weather control reflects the deep-seated beliefs among Daybell's followers.
- Testimonies suggest that Chad might have been the initiator of many of the spiritual beliefs previously attributed to Lori.
- The discussion also touched on the potential impact of these testimonies on the defense strategies and the overall direction of the trial.
- Faddis discusses the challenges Chad Daybell would face if he decides to testify, given the overwhelming evidence and testimonies against him.
- The conversation also reflects on the broader implications of belief and manipulation in religious or spiritual communities.

More Magical Thinking In The Trial Of Chad Daybell

8m · Published 17 May 13:00
In this episode of 'Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski,' Jennifer Coffindaffer, a retired FBI special agent, discusses the ongoing trial of Chad Daybell, highlighting the striking aspects of the trial, including the return of witnesses from the Lori Vallow case and their continued bizarre testimonies. The episode delves into the alleged supernatural beliefs and manipulations by Chad Daybell, such as convincing followers of his ability to predict deaths and reincarnations, and Zulema Pastenes' claimed weather-controlling powers. Coffindaffer criticizes the defense’s lack of substantial evidence and the concerning courtroom procedures that may lead to future appeals. The discussion emphasizes the unusual nature of the case, involving claims of magical powers and reincarnation used to justify actions within a dangerous cult-like context. Coffindaffer also expresses concerns over the trial's handling and the potential implications for an appeal due to the way witnesses are allowed to provide extended narratives without direct questioning.
Main Points of the Conversation
- The ongoing Chad Daybell trial revisits many elements from Lori Vallow’s trial, including bizarre testimonies about supernatural powers.
- Witness Zulema Pastenes testified about her past belief in her ability to control the weather and Chad's manipulative prophecies regarding the deaths of J.J. Vallow and others.
- Concerns about the lack of a solid defense for Chad Daybell and the potential for an appeal based on courtroom procedural issues.
- Discussions about the use of religious and supernatural claims to justify criminal actions, characterizing Chad and Lori as using these as a facade for their crimes.
- Observations on the potential long-term implications of the trial and the possibility of retrial due to issues like inadequate counsel and witness handling in court.

The Crazy Jailhouse Calls Between Chad Daybell & Lori Vallow

15m · Published 17 May 11:00
In a major development in the Chad Daybell murder trial, new evidence was presented in court featuring a bizarre phone conversation between Daybell and his wife, Lori Vallow. This evidence, revealed for the first time, adds to the disturbing narrative surrounding the deaths of Vallow's two children and Daybell's first wife.*
The phone call, recorded on June 8, 2020, from a jailhouse phone, was presented in court as a crucial piece of evidence. The call occurred a day before authorities discovered the remains of seven-year-old JJ Vallow and 16-year-old Tylee Ryan. At the time, Lori Vallow was accused of child abandonment.
The Phone Conversation
During the call, Chad Daybell and Lori Vallow spoke in a mixture of religious fervor and coded language. Vallow could be heard saying, "Before the second coming, the Lord had ordained for us to begin the millennial day within Zion while war and chaos reigned everywhere else." Daybell responded, mentioning that the new Jerusalem would grow "exponentially." He added, "They're doing all they can to destroy one of the key families, but they're not going to."
Mention of Alex Cox
The conversation took a more chilling turn when Daybell mentioned Vallow's deceased brother, Alex Cox. Despite Cox having been dead for six months, Daybell claimed to have been in contact with him, saying, "He did want me to say he misses you."
"Through our investigation, we learned that Alex Cox often went by Ray Lamar," Ray Hermosillo of the Rexburg Police testified.
Cryptic Project Discussions
The couple's discussion then veered towards a "project" or "blueprint," with Vallow questioning how to manage issues within it. "But there's other things in the project when I'm going back over it that I could have easily done or been inspired to do to avoid a lot of the issues that were gonna come up with that," she said.
Daybell responded with reassurance, "It's a marvelous plan."
"How do you know so?" Vallow asked.
"How do I know? It's been shown to me honey. You just are spectacular, and the Lord is going to use those talents. You're on earth on this time for that purpose," Daybell replied.
Defense Response
Daybell's defense attorney attempted to downplay the significance of the call, questioning the detective who listened to it. He pointed out that JJ, Tylee, and Tammy Daybell had all died before the call took place.
"So there wasn't - from your knowledge in this - some nefarious plan to kill or murder anyone, was it?" the attorney asked.
"It was in furtherance of the plan from our investigation," Hermosillo replied.
As the prosecution's case moves forward, they have called a total of 67 witnesses to the stand. Judge Steven Boyce suggested that the state could rest its case after calling another witness on May 16. Following this, the defense will have the opportunity to present their witnesses.
This latest evidence further complicates the defense's narrative and underscores the bizarre and disturbing elements of the case involving Chad Daybell and Lori Vallow.

Key Testimonies and Evidence Examined in the John O’Keefe Death Investigation

15m · Published 17 May 10:00
Colin Albert took the stand in the ongoing investigation into John O’Keefe's death, recounting his presence at his cousin Brian Albert Jr.'s birthday party at 34 Fairview. Despite assertions from other witnesses, Albert stated he was not overly intoxicated. "No," he responded when asked if he was drunk, and added, "I didn’t see anyone from another group or older coming into the house before I left."
ADA Lally displayed a picture of Albert taken a few weeks after O’Keefe's death, providing the jury with a visual reference.
**Emotional Testimony from Alli McCabe**
Alli McCabe, daughter of Jen and Matt McCabe and Brian Albert’s niece, gave an emotional testimony. She was excused after describing the harassment her family endured. McCabe revealed that the state police never requested to image her phone, affirming she didn’t alter the timestamps on her texts with Colin Albert. "I don’t remember," she said when asked if state police asked to look at her phone.
The prosecution presented a photo of Colin Albert to the jury for the first time. McCabe’s testimony continued with questions about text exchanges with Albert regarding picking him up at 34 Fairview, leading to objections from the defense.
Ryan Nagel, who arrived at 34 Fairview to pick up his sister, testified that he did not see the SUV reverse and hit a pedestrian. "No," he answered when asked by ADA Lally. Nagel described the scene, "I observed there was a person inside the car, there was an interior light on and a woman in the driver’s seat."
**Forensic Testimony Highlights DNA Findings**
Teri Kun, a veterinary scientist at UC Davis, provided crucial forensic evidence. She confirmed the absence of K9 DNA on the swabs tested, only detecting pig DNA, which she noted could have come from food. "We did not see any K9 DNA," Kun stated, adding that the pig DNA could have been from food sources.
These testimonies and pieces of evidence are pivotal as the investigation continues to unravel the circumstances surrounding John O’Keefe's death. The court proceedings shed light on various aspects, from witness observations to forensic findings, aiming to piece together the events of that fateful night at 34 Fairview.
