Excessive Rumination: Episode 15 - David White

1h 26m · Published 22 Dec 11:00

Excessive Rumination back in your life!

On today's episode I'm joined by a man and photographer I have tremendous respect for, Senior Lecturer on the Press and Editorial Photography course at Falmouth University, David White.

Dave was instrumental to me surviving and thriving at University back in the glory days of 2012 - 2015. I have to hold my hands up and say I massively under appreciated Dave, and the other tutors, in terms of the photographic talent they brought to the course. Dave has been a photojournalist for over two decades and in that time has shot an incredible amount of work all over the world, his story on Russian Cosmonauts being a particular highlight.

However, it's not just Dave's photographic history I'm interested in talking about, it's his viewpoint as an arts degree lecturer in 2020 and what that looks like. We talk mental health in students, the value of an arts degree, rights of passage and 'the fourth year'.

You can, and absolutely should, check out Dave's work at www.nospin.com and if you've got any interest in the Press and Editorial course, for you or someone else, go to https://www.falmouth.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/press-editorial-photography for more info. Alternatively you can contact Dave or myself direct if you want the lecturer and the ex-student perspective.

Excessive Rumination: Episode 14 - Jonny Senett

2h 6m · Published 15 Dec 00:00

Excessive Rumination, back in your life!

On today's episode I'm joined by yet another good mate of mine, this one noteworthy for being as tall as me. Oh, and he's also incredible at guitar. How incredible?

Well you've got to be a slice of alright to pose as Brian May for a world-wide touring Queen tribute band; I'm told their songs are difficult?

Jonny's a great conversation any time he's back in Jersey, but I wanted to chat to him about his interesting career path, loving and hating the music scene and what he's learnt along the way. We also, for some reason, get into a discussion about the best way to parent pre-teen children so... stick around for that?!

Jonny didn't give me any contact information so if you wanna know more about him, tough.

His band, however, is UK Queen, definitely check them out - http://ukqueen.co.uk/

2h 2m · Published 10 Nov 00:00

Excessive Rumination, back in your life!

On today's episode I'm joined by the Vicar of St Andrew's Church, Mark Barrett.

Mike chats to me about where his faith is derived from, how it sits alongside his science-based skepticism, his views on Heaven and life after death and how much of a nightmare the Bible is to actually read.

Content Warning: This podcast focuses on topics around death and suffering within the human experience, stories about cancer, wasting illness and war crimes. Listener discretion is advised.

Excessive Rumination: Episode 9 - Jared Crespel

1h 24m · Published 27 Oct 00:00

Excessive Rumination, back in your life!

On today's episode I'm joined by singer/songwriter, Jared Crespel.

In 2019 Jared took on a creative challenge that was after my own heart; he committed to writing a song a month for a year, literally beginning from scratch each time and having it recorded and uploaded within the month. I loved seeing this creative process develop and always had questions I wanted to ask Jared about this project.

We get into that and so much more, including subjects not limited to working as a building surveyor, the stigma of coming from Jersey in the creative scene, the plight of Fatima, and we even sneak in a little natter about The Real Housewives of Jersey.

Excessive Rumination: Episode 8 - Andy Truscott

1h 51m · Published 12 Oct 23:00

Excessive Rumination, back in your life!

On this episode I'm joined by marathon sea-swimmer, Andy Truscott.

Andy, in 2017, became the first person to swim two laps of Jersey consecutively, a feat which, whilst absolutely incredibly, barely made island news. I met Andy shortly after that swim and we ended up collaborating together on documenting his upcoming swim, which would be for the world record for longest swim in tidal conditions. To do this, he would swim 3 consecutive laps of the island and amass a distance of over 198km.

Andy is a big figure in the world of marathon sea-swimming, and is an outspoken advocate for mental health. It was a pleasure to have him on the podcast chatting about his experience of the swim, what lessons he learnt from it and how he sees the future of sea swimming in Jersey. Also, apparently he's going to get me to swim the Channel one day...

Excessive Rumination: Episode 7 - Stuart Penn

1h 46m · Published 05 Oct 23:00

Excessive Rumination, back in your life!

An interesting first for the show, on this episode I've invited my boss, Stuart Penn, in for a chat. No, we're not recording my performance review for an awkward listening experience; although I'm sure it would be spotless.. Stu's actually here to have about his life! Highs, lows, being a father and falling out of helicopters included.

Stuart is an adaptive athlete from the UK, born with one fully-formed arm, a stump from below the elbow on the other, one partially formed leg and the other a stump just below the knee. Stuart was born this way, so adaptation has been a natural progression within his life, though it hasn't always been easy (or ever is) as we get into in the conversation. Despite challenges many of us will never face, specifically within the mundane and overlooked aspects of life, Stuart has cultivated a fascinating life for himself, travelling all over the world for his work with the armed forces, succeeding as a world-class martial artist, an incredibly motivational speaker, loving husband and loved father. He's a man I genuinely look up to and it's a pleasure to have him on the show.

Hope you enjoy, it's a gooden!

Excessive Rumination: Episode 6 - Sam Mézec

1h 39m · Published 28 Sep 23:00

Excessive Rumination, back in your life!

On this episode I'm joined by friend and local politician, Sam Mézec, who is the founder and leader of Jersey's only political party; Reform Jersey.

Whilst we do inevitably chat politics, both local and world-wide, this podcast is focused predominantly on who Sam is as a person, the personal challenges he's faced since being a full-time politician and what his advice to a new generation of public servant would be.

Great to have had Sam on the podcast and you'll definitely hear him on the show again.

Breakwater Sausage: Ep 3 - Colleen's

1h 25m · Published 22 Sep 00:00

"WHERE DOES THE BEST FULL-ENGLISH BREAKFAST IN JERSEY?!"

Calm down, we're on it.

Who are 'we'? Co-workers, John Liot and Chris Mutton; one's a Jersey-boy, the other's from the West Country, but both are joined by a love and admiration of the full-English.

What began as a work-place discussion (which we were scalded for conducting during business hours) became a journey, an exploration, to find and review every full-English breakfast available in Jersey.

Episode 3, it's proverbs and starring gift horses in the mouth at Colleen's in Greve de Lecq.
