Persuasion(excerpt)

3m · Published 15 Jul 00:00

Persuasion(excerpt)
Jane Austen
I can listen no longer in silence. I must speak to you by such means as are within my reach.
You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope. Tell me not that I am too late, that such precious feelings are gone for ever.
I offer myself to you again with a heart even more your own, than when you almost broke it, eight years and a half ago.
Dare not say that man forgets sooner than woman, that his love has an earlier death. I have loved none but you. Unjust I may have been, weak and resentful I have been, but never inconstant.
You alone have brought me to Bath. For you alone, I think and plan. —Have you not seen this? Can you fail to have understood my wishes?
I had not waited even these ten days, could I have read your feelings, as I think you must have penetrated mine. I can hardly write. I am every instant hearing something which overpowers me.
You sink your voice, but I can distinguish the tones of that voice when they would be lost on others. —Too good, too excellent creature!
You do us justice, indeed. You do believe that there is true attachment and constancy among men. Believe it to be most fervent, most undeviating, in F. W.

Paper Boats 纸船

Paper Boats (1913)
Rabindranath Tagore
Day by day I float my paper boats one by one down the running stream.
In big black letters I write my name on them and the name of
the village where I live.
I hope that someone in some strange land will find them and
know who I am.
I load my little boats with shiuli flowers from our garden, and hope that these blooms of the dawn will be carried safely to land in the night.
I launch my paper boats and look up into the sky and see the little clouds setting their white bulging sails.
I know not what playmate of mine in the sky sends them down the air to race with my boats!
When night comes I bury my face in my arms and dream that my paper boats float on and on under the midnight stars.
The fairies of sleep are sailing in them, and the lading is their baskets full of dreams.

There is a lady sweet and kind

3m · Published 26 Jun 11:44

There is a lady sweet and kind, was never face so pleas'd my mind;

有一位小姐甜美又温柔,从来没有人像她那样让我着迷;

I did but see her passing by, and yet I love her till I die.

Her gesture, motion, and her smiles, her wit, her voice, my heart beguiles, beguiles my heart.

I know not why, and yet I love her till I die.

Her free behaviour, winning looks, will make a lawyer burn his books;

她自由的姿态,胜利的面庞,让律师都羞愧到自焚书籍;

I touch'd her not, alas! Not I, and yet I love her till I die.

Had I her fast betwixt minearms, judge you that think such sports were harms, Were't any harm? No, no, fie, fie, for I will love her till I die.

Should I remain confined there so long as Phoebus in his sphere, I to request, she to deny, yet would I love her till I die.

Cupid is winged and doth range, her country so my love doth change: but change she earth, or change she sky, yet will I love her till I die.

A Moments Indulgence

1m · Published 03 Sep 13:01

I ask for a moment's indulgence to sit by thy side. The works

that I have in hand I will finish afterwards.

Away from the sight of thy face my heart knows no rest nor respite,
and my work becomes an endless toil in a shoreless sea of toil.

Today the summer has come at my window with its sighs and murmurs; and
the bees are plying their minstrelsy at the court of the flowering grove.

Now it is time to sit quite, face to face with thee, and to sing
dedication of life in this silent and overflowing leisure.

Clouds and Waves

2m · Published 31 Aug 13:09

Mother, the folk who live up in the clouds call out to me- "We play from the time we wake till the day ends.

We play with the golden dawn, we play with the silver moon." I ask, "But how am I to get up to you ?"

They answer, "Come to the edge of the earth, lift up your hands to the sky, and you will be taken up into the clouds."

"My mother is waiting for me at home, "I say, "How can I leave her and come?"

Then they smile and float away.

But I know a nicer game than that, mother.

I shall be the cloud and you the moon.

I shall cover you with both my hands, and our house-top will be the blue sky.

The folk who live in the waves call out to me-

"We sing from morning till night; on and on we travel and knownot where we pass."

I ask, "But how am I to join you?"

They tell me, "Come to the edge of the shore and stand withyour eyes tight shut, and you will be carried out upon the waves."

I say, "My mother always wants me at home in the everything-how can I leave her and go?"

They smile, dance and pass by.

But I know a better game than that.

I will be the waves and you will be a strange shore.

I shall roll on and on and on, and break upon your lap withlaughter.

And no one in the world will know where we both are.

Clenched Soul

2m · Published 24 Aug 11:17

We have lost even this twilight.
No one saw us this evening hand in hand
while the blue night dropped on the world.

I have seen from my window
the fiesta of sunset in the distant mountain tops.

Sometimes a piece of sun
burned like a coin in my hand.

I remember you with my soul clenched
in that sadness of mine that you know.

Where were you then?
Who else was there?
Saying what?
Why will the whole of love come to me suddenly
when I am sad and feel you are far away?

The book fell that is always turned to at twilight
and my cape rolled like a hurt dog at my feet.

Always, always you recede through the evenings
towards where the twilight goes erasing statues.

On Children

2m · Published 22 Aug 11:24

Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.

They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts, For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls, For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.

You may strive to be like them,

but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.

You are the bows from which your children
as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might
that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness; For even as He loves the arrow that flies,
so He loves also the bow that is stable.
