J Mascis [Performance & Interview Only]

21m · Published 19 Mar 07:00

On the show this time, it’s the soothing acoustic jams of J Mascis.

Just kidding! J Mascis has fun playing some acoustic shows, though of course he is known for playing a Fender Jazzmaster, super loud through a couple of Marshall stacks and a fuzz pedal or 2. His familiar well-worn tenor has only gained strength over the years since we first heard him with Dinosaur Jr.

In this session he grabbed a 12-string acoustic and delivered an intimate soul-comforting set. His latest solo record, recorded at home, is called 'What Do We Do Now' and it is available on Sub Pop records.

Recorded 01/15/2024.

  1. Can't Believe We're Here
  2. What Do We Do Now
  3. You Don't Understand Me
  4. Motion Sickness - Phoebe Bridgers cover (Stranger in the Alps, 2017)

Hooveriii

29m · Published 12 Mar 07:00

Hooveriii is the solo project, now writ large, of singer / guitarist Bert Hoover. Specifically, Robert Hoover the third. The project started out in a garage in El Segundo, CA with Bert playing all the parts - bass, guitar, Casio, and drum machine into his classic 4-track Tascam 414. You can listen to that original album on vinyl coming out for Record Store Day - that’s April 20th, 2024. Over time he has assembled a stellar group of like-minded musicians. They are all capable of hitting their mark, tight and neat. They are also capable of some superb veering off into space jams. It’s psych-rock, influenced by krautrock, and it aims to take you away from this harsh world for a while - to a better place. The latest record is called 'Pointe' and it is available through the Reverberation Appreciation Society / Levitation.

Recorded 11/20/2023.

  1. The Tall Grass
  2. Can't You Hear Me Calling?
  3. The Ship That I Sail
  4. This Rock

The Hives

29m · Published 27 Feb 08:00

On the show this time, it’s the Rock n Roll Revival of the Hives.

The Hives have been rocking fans across the world since the 90’s, when they released their first demo, “Sounds Like Sushi.” Their over-the-top energy and memorable hooks were apparent from the start – as was their wacky sense of humor – need a punk ode to constipation? Yeah you got it. They dress up fancy in black and white suits. They play fast loud punk rock music. Their live shows are legendary. And ever since they put out the anthem “Hate To Say I Told You So” on their 2nd full length, 'Veni Vidi Vicious,' they did in fact take over the world. Their latest is called 'The Death of Randy Fitzsimmons' and it is available on their own imprint, Disques Hives.

Recorded 11/07/2023.

  1. Bogus Operandi
  2. Main Offender
  3. Rigor Mortis Radio
  4. Hate To Say I Told You So
  5. Countdown To Shutdown
  6. Come On
  7. Tick Tick Boom

El Khat [Performance & Interview Only]

28m · Published 27 Feb 02:14

On the show this time is inspiration from the music of Yemen, played with the homemade instruments of El Khat.

El Khat is the musical brainchild of Eyal el Wahab, a Yemeni man who grew up in Tel Aviv. He makes his own instruments in the tradition of impoverished people all over the world. The band is named after the drug – Khat – a stimulant chewed like tobacco across the Middle East and in Africa, and you’d better check where you are before partaking. Its legality varies by location, as does the punishment for possession! El Khat’s music is based in the traditional sounds of Yemen, but it is not frozen in amber, this is not anthropology. This is living modern music for you to listen to now. Their latest is called Albat Alawi Op. 99 and it is available on Glitterbeat.

Recorded 11/02/2023.

  • Balagh Al Achbaab
  • Tislami Tislami
  • Zafa
  • Djaja

TEKE::TEKE

29m · Published 13 Feb 08:00

On the show this time, it’s the compelling “collage-rock” of Montreal’s TEKE::TEKE.

TEKE::TEKE is a rock band from Montreal, with the twist being that they play in the style of 1960’s and 70’s Japanese movie soundtracks. It is a big band - 7 musicians - and their diverse backgrounds help to drive their eclectic modern take on the psychedelic rock they use for inspiration. The name TEKE::TEKE refers to the classic sound of surf guitar, and originally, they formed to honor Japanese surf legend Takeshi Terauchi. Drums, bass, dueling guitars, trombone, and flute constitute an impressive sonic palette, but once you throw in traditional Japanese instruments, multilingual poetic lyrics, and a punk rock heart - you'd better hold on because it's gonna be a ride! The addition of one of the world’s most charismatic front-persons, in the form of singer and fashion icon Maya Kuroki pushes the band from brilliant to downright extraordinary. It’s loud, it's colorful and it’s super fun. Their latest is called 'Hagata' and it is available on Kill Rock Stars.

Recorded 10/20/2023.

  1. Setagaya Koya
  2. Gotoku Lemon
  3. Onaji Heya
  4. Hoppe
