Neville Wright - Founder of Kiddicare - You Have To Speculate To Accumulate!

1h 37m · Published 08 Jul 23:00

Wildly successful Entrepreneur (selling Kiddicare for an impressive £70 Million),  Mentor, Author & Public Speaker, Neville Wright joins Kurt and Di in this hilarious episode of Back 2 Business. Neville shares his story about how he went from being ‘unemployable’, to being self-employed and co-founding one of the UK’s largest children's retailers Kiddicare, along with his wife Maraliyn as well as creating multiple streams of income. Together, they discuss the perks of being self-employed, why you should always trust your gut and the benefits of being mentored.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • When you go self-employed you are able to do the work which you are trained for and  are able to get other staff members to do the work which you cannot do. If you have a vision you are able to make it come true by having all the competencies that you need for that vision. The grit for success comes from your vision, hopes, dreams and determination.
  • Listen to your gut more and try not to listen to the opinions of others who are not experts within your niche. If somebody who has mastered the niche, gives you advice then take it as they may have made mistakes which they don’t want you to make too.
  • You have to speculate, to accumulate. When you speculate, you speculate with everything you have in your life. Start to review the way you treat people, what you do for people and the way you do business. Stand still, and look around. What is there around you that could be a potential business opportunity?
  • With the right attitude you can achieve anything. You may have challenges but you can achieve greatness when you put your mind to it.
  • Do not let other people brainwash you. Brainwash yourself with the thoughts, goals and aspirations that you want and have.

BEST MOMENTS

“I was competing against me, to tell me that I wasn’t a stupid person.”

“ I should have listened to my gut feeling a lot more.”

“Stand still and look around you.”

“This is the only job I have got today, So I might as well make it the best job I have got today.”

ABOUT THE GUEST

“ When I was 24 years old I retired from mainstream employment to become self-employed, maybe because I thought that I was unemployable, as after having 17 jobs it was clear to me that I needed to focus all of my energy into my own life and business.I developed a property maintenance business, expanding into retail, alongside incorporating buying and selling businesses. Spinning plates in each of the businesses to keep them going was very intense and educational, juggling finances became an art which I thrived on. Just how can anyone in our society retire at the age of 24 having no money and no education? I say, ‘it’s easy for some, all you need is to be in your element so when you find that you are in your element you will never have to work another day in your life.’ I have gone through recessions since the big one in1974, there were some very scary times and indeed more scary moments than anyone could imagine, however, all these life experiences have put me in a position to advise people. Throughout my 47-year career in business, property investment, retail and building have been at the core of my success, but most people recognise me, and my wife Marilyn, for the sale of Kiddicare, a baby nursery retailer which we started in 1977 and sold for £70 million in cash to Morrisons supermarket in 2011. A record price for one independent shop in the depths of a recession. What many people will not know is I had previously sold three nursery businesses, dating back over the last 36 years, plus a variety of other businesses including hairdressing salons, restaurants, a large house-building business and a technology company.”

Rob Moore - Founder of the Disruptors Podcast & Co - Founder of Progressive Property

1h 0m · Published 24 Jun 23:00

The Disruptive Entrepreneur himself, Rob Moore joins the podcast today to discuss how he managed to become a successful entrepreneur, best-selling author and social media star after having over £50K worth of debt at the age of just 25. Together they discuss the importance of loving what you do, why you should not let one bad thing that happened to you ruin your whole mindset and why being an entrepreneur means you get to do what you love for as long as you live.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • If  you study the people who love what they do and do what they love, they are all working until the early hours of the morning and do not even see it as work. The key to energy is merging your passion with your profession and doing what you love, and loving what you do.
  • Never let anyone tell you that money is not a motivator, it absolutely is a motivator. However, just ensure that you do not make money the only motivator.
  • So many people let one bad thing ruin everything. What you should learn to do is identify the bad thing in your day and make sure that it does not warp your view of everything else going on in your life. So many people want to sell their business when they have a bad day or a complaint. Always know that you are on the right path.
  • Everything is not for everyone, including entrepreneurship. Would you rather have the downsides of entrepreneurship or the downsides of employment? The rewards of being an entrepreneur may outway the rewards of being employed. You can contribute massively and create a product and service yourself and watch it grow.
  • If you are in a creative or valuable endeavor and are doing something that you love, why would you want it to end? As an entrepreneur you know that you have the rest of your life to do cool and interesting stuff and the fact that you can continue to do that forever, is exciting.

BEST MOMENTS

“Of course, meeting Mark has had a massive impact in my business and financial life.”

“I love coming up with an idea and people thinking it won’t work and making it work.”

“Being told what to do by someone I don’t like and I don’t admire, is a pain way worse than the challenges of being an entrepreneur.”

“Bring it on.”

USA 200m Elite Athlete: Mr200 - Curtis Mitchell, how to become an Elite Athelete

49m · Published 10 Jun 23:00

In today’s podcast, Kurt and Di are joined by USA 200m Olympic athlete, social media star and entrepreneur, Curtis Mitchell, who explains how he went from humble beginnings, to competing against Usain Bolt on the olympic stage and bagging himself a Bronze medal. Curtis discusses how to keep yourself focused, how to leverage your personal brand to take you to greater levels of success and why giving back to the community you came from is so important.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • We all have bad days. Sometimes you may feel low or anxious but you should always remember that you cannot bank that each day of your life is going to be great. You have to get comfortable, being uncomfortable. To keep yourself focused, understand that the reason you are working so hard is because you do not want to be average, you want to be great.

  • Money should not be your main motivator, use your idols as your motivation. If you want to be as good as someone, make it your aim to get into their league so that one day, you may even find yourself competing against them.

  • You have to continuously put the effort in when you want to create your own business. You have to be smart with yourself and put yourself out there. Be disciplined, focused, work on yourself and educate yourself to get to where you want to be. If you do not have any financial literacy, you are going to get taken advantage of, so educate yourself first to avoid this happening to you.

  • Continuously strive to put yourself out there, make new connections on social media platforms such as Clubhouse and leverage this to grow your brand. Once you do that, you will start to get in front of the right people that can help take you to the next level. Build a strong, reputable brand that, if done correctly you can leverage to take you on to bigger opportunities.

  • Giving back to the community you came from is really important. Sharing your personal stories and being a mentor to children who came from similar, humble beginnings like you did can help motivate and inspire them and will allow them to know and believe that they can reach similar levels of success.

BEST MOMENTS

“I am never going to quit on myself.”

“I took a chance.”

“It takes money to make money.”

“I want to continue to add more value.”

ABOUT THE GUEST

“Curtis was a 2008 & 2009 junior college 4 time outdoor all American and state champion in the 100 and 200 m at Southwestern College in San Diego. Mitchell had a successful collegiate career for Texas A&M University. At the 2010 NCAA Indoor Championships he won the 200 m and was part of Texas A&M's winning team in the 4 × 400 m relay. His time in the 200 m was 20.38 s, the best indoor time in the world that year and a Texas A&M record. At the outdoor championships that year he placed second to Rondel Sorrillo in the 200 m, helping Texas A&M to their second consecutive NCAA team title. In 2010, Mitchell represented the United States at the NACAC Under-23 Championships in Miramar, Florida, winning gold in both 200 m and the 4 × 100 m relay. In the 200 m semi-finals he clocked a wind-legal personal best of 19.99 s, placing him seventh in the world that year. Mitchell turned professional in January 2011, forgoing his final year of collegiate eligibility to sign with Adidas and join the training group of two-time World Champion Tyson Gay , Curtis Mitchell won Bronze at the 2013 IAAF World Championships behind Usain Bolt and Warren Weir in a time of 20.04 seconds.”

Brian Dean - Founder of Backlinko & SEO Expert - Lot's of SEO Insights

51m · Published 27 May 23:00

Internationally recognised SEO expert and Backlinko founder Brian Dean joins Kurt and Di today to discuss how he went from failing to succeeding in the world of online business.

They discuss how to ensure you do not hire the wrong people, how to scale your business and how to grow your YouTube channel.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • The main takeaway from reading the book “The four hour work week” is that almost anyone can do it, if they apply the right strategies. It is not about who you are as a person it is just doing the right things. Your identity may be wrapped up in your job role or your academic achievements but you can change that if it no longer serves you. Even if you have never tried to go on your own, it is still doable.

  • To ensure you do not hire the wrong people you can create a two part filter. Firstly, put something in your job proposal that they have to include in the cover letter showing that they read it, this proves that they can follow instructions. Secondly, hire everyone for a test project rather than hiring them straight away for the real things, this will save you money and time in the long run.

  • When you are just getting started in business it is all about grinding and figuring things out. Once you move past this point, you need to focus on scaling your business. That has less to do with SEO and more to do with creating a good work culture, creating systems and hiring more staff.

  • If you are looking to start and grow your YouTube channel some good advice is to create great content and continue to post regularly. Good content has a way of finding its way to get views although you will still need to promote it. YouTube is a platform that is much fairer than others,  you have a chance to get your video seen without having to work extremely hard.

  • Watch other YouTube channels that have high subscriber counts and are outside of your niche, then compare the structure of their videos to yours. You should then look at other Youtube channels within your niche and identify what seems to be working and what doesn’t. Incorporate these findings into your videos.

  • Working remotely will not impact your productivity even if you move around and work from different cities of countries around the world.

BEST MOMENTS

“Even if you have never even tried this, it is still doable.”

“For every prince, there are 100 frogs.”

“How it starts is how it ends.”

“With YouTube, I would say focus on your videos more than your ‘bells and whistles’ stuff.”

ABOUT THE GUEST

Rand Fishkin, Co-Founder of SEOmoz (moz.com) - how to boost your SEO rankings

1h 4m · Published 13 May 23:00

Leader in the field of search engine optimization tools and CEO & Co-Founder of SEOmoz, Rand Fishkin joins Kurt and Di today to share his story about how he went from university drop out to becoming CEO of the worlds biggest SEO empire. Together, they discuss how to improve your Google ranking, defining your own goals and how entrepreneurs have the opportunity to create a brand new business world.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Working with family can present itself with many challenges, particularly if you live together. You may find that you only ever talk about your business and rarely have time to switch off.
  • These days many businesses are beginning to outsource their staff such as contractors, consultants and agencies. Usually consultants and agencies will ramp up a lot faster than regular employees. Training someone inhouse takes longer than hiring a consultant since many jobs require a large skill set.
  • When you want to improve your Google ranking you need to evolve with the platform. The search engine has grown and rather than only using keywords,  you need to ensure that your content solves the searchers query ten times better than anyone else. Over time, you would eventually rank higher. Google would figure out the signals that it needs to ensure that your brilliant content ranked the highest.
  • When creating high ranking content, have empathy for the person that is searching the query. Imagine the searcher has a question they need answering, they reach your content and it solves their original question as well as the new questions they may have thought of whilst reading it.
  • When you define your own goals for success you also want to carve out some of the road map that you want to use to get there. Make that fundamentally different to how others do it.
  • A lot of people and a lot of businesses are all competing with each other. This works terribly when you have a few monopolies who are influencing the world. As entrepreneurs you have a chance to participate in the world that you want to see exist.

BEST MOMENTS

“I think that humility and that lack of confidence actually helped build a big audience.”

“In retrospect, I deeply regret it.”

“I want to prove to the world that you can build an alternative fundraising model, your own fundraising model and be more successful statistically.”

“It was a very, very challenging time.”

ABOUT THE GUEST

Rand Fishkin is the CEO & Co-Founder of SEOmoz, a leader in the field of search engine optimization tools, resources & community. In 2009, he was named among the 30 Best Young Tech Entrepreneurs Under 30 by BusinessWeek, and has been written about it in the Seattle Times, Newsweek and the New York Times among others. Rand has keynoted conferences on search from Sydney to Reykjavik, Montreal to Munich and spoken at dozens of shows around the world. He's particularly passionate about the SEOmoz blog, read by tens of thousands of search professionals each day. In his miniscule spare time, Rand enjoys the company of his amazing wife, Geraldine.

Perry Marshall, Author of 'The Ultimate Guide to Adwords'. Perry knows everything about PPC (Pay Per Click)

1h 22m · Published 29 Apr 23:03

An exciting new episode as Kurt and Di are joined by successful author, founder of Evolution 2.0 and internet marketing expert, Perry Marshall. Perry shares his personal journey on his route to international success and discusses his new ventures in the world of online marketing. Together they discuss that book "The Ultimate Guide to Google AdWords" and how to excel by elimination outlined in his book Detox, Declutter, Dominate.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  1. Some great advice if you are looking to start writing a book would be ‘don’t start unless you are a writer’. This doesn’t mean you have to be ‘Ernest Hemingway’ but you do need to have a way with words. When you do decide to write, you need to write about  something unique. You need to either write the same thing to a unique set of people or you need to address a new thing. This may mean narrowing your topic down to something really specific.
  2. TikTok is like Facebook 11 years ago. There is a huge amount of engagement on it and it is likely going to be a multi billion dollar platform before long. All of the social media platforms have their own idiosyncratic way and nobody can be an expert of all of them. You can get good at one or two of them and use the other platforms for re-targeting.
  3. Succeeding in business is not a bunch of formulas or systems that you go and copy out of somebody's manual. Business is really 7 riddles that only you can figure out for yourself.  Firstly, you need a ritual to figure out the riddles in the first place.  You need to start your day the right way which is by planning, meditating, praying or whatever your spiritual practice is. This is the foundation of everything.
  4. You need to figure out where the 80/20 levers are in your business. Then, you  need to earn $1000 an hour a day for one hour a day with 80/20 time. You then need to create an irresistible product that is a joy to use by simplifying it for your customers. You are going to find a way to make your customers' life simpler, it may make your life more complicated but this is why you have a job.
  5. Carve out the niche where you’re the number one undisputed leader. Most people never do this but whatever you do you need to make sure you are number one. Next, build a moat around your castle to ensure you are defending your business long term, why start a business you cannot defend?. Lastly, enjoy the freedom to create an event everyday. Most people feel guilty when they are creating something, reading a book or just thinking.
  6. When you get to a certain level of mastery in your niche, you will now know how to master anything. You will eventually be able to know more about an entire industry in two weeks than a college student who has spent three years of their life learning about.

BEST MOMENTS

  • “My first sales job totally ran against my marketing DNA”
  • “You have got to have something unique to say.”
  • “If he has to remind you how smart he is, to remind you he is smart..then he is not smart.”
  • “One person cannot master 6 ad platforms.”
  • “Whatever you do you need to make sure you are number one in.”
  • “Everyone is conditioned to look busy, but they aren’t even busy.”

Mr "No Money Down" - Kevin McDonnell - Creative Finance & Property Expert

1h 16m · Published 29 Apr 23:02

Serial entrepreneur, public speaker, best selling author and one of the UK’s most successful property experts Kevin McDonnell joins Kurt and Di today to share his personal journey in property and offer invaluable advice for anyone wishing to start out in the industry. Together they discuss property strategies and techniques, how to find which technique works best for you and how property can completely change your life.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  1. There are only a few property strategies: Commercial, Buy-to-lets, HMO’s (Houses of multiple occupancy), serviced accommodation and buy to sell. You then have property techniques which are different ways to acquire property. Decide what type of property strategy you wish to do and then figure out how you can go about doing that with no money.  You do not need money to do property, you need knowledge.
  2. So many people within property are trying to do what is best. You do not need to do what is best, you just need to do something that works well for you. You do not need to do risky strategies once you are out of debt even if the risk could potentially bring you huge rewards.
  3. What many people in property are doing is focusing too much on money. They are focusing on the money they have in their banks and wondering what to do with it. Whilst they are focusing on their money, they are failing to put a proper plan in place.
  4. You should immediately start to think about making connections. Start talking to people walking the streets, look around areas scouting for properties for sale and go knocking on the door. Reach out to the owners and landlords and offer them your business proposal.
  5. For those on a budget looking for a business mentor they can try to utilise free resources such as podcasts, free events, online events and books. Be around anything and everything that can get you closer to your property goals. Utilise local property events so that you can build your local network.
  6. Be obsessed or be average. You should be obsessed with your own journey and make sure you work both smart and hard so that you get a lot into your day and are able to enjoy your downtime.

BEST MOMENTS

  • “I had the drive, the passion and the confidence but I didn't have the knowledge.”
  • “What I did see, completely changed my life.”
  • “I get a buzz out of negotiating a deal.”
  • “I’ve made myself financially strong.”
  • “When I work I work hard, when I don’t I don’t.”
  • "Be obsessed or be average."

.. and be sure to check out the quick fire trivia round!

Deep Dive with Mark Homer - The UK's Top Property Investor

1h 30m · Published 29 Apr 23:01

Welcome to the Back2Business podcast with Kurt Wilson (Entrepreneur, Internet Veteran and Property Investor) and Di Forster (Entrepreneur, Property Investor and Mum with exceptional grit). This insightful and informative show is perfect for time-poor entrepreneurs looking to start, grow and scale their business and with jam-packed episodes and fascinating stories filled with actionable advice, the Back2Business podcast is here to help you take your business venture to the next level.

In today’s episode, Kurt and Di are joined by one of the UK’s top property experts and co-founder of the UK’s largest property training business, Mark Homer. Together they discuss what it takes to be successful in property, which investment strategies can turn property into profit, and some important lessons and property market prediction.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  1. Delayed gratification is about building assets for income streams, equity and making money for the future. Save a pound today and that will be worth so much more in the years to come.
  2. If you decide it is time to take out a credit card you absolutely must set up a direct debit to ensure the full amount is paid every month, this is non-negotiable. If you find it hard to keep track, make weekly payments. This has to be the way forward so that you can learn financial discipline.
  3. There are many common mistakes people repeatedly make when getting into property. One of them being ‘shiny penny syndrome’ this meaning that they do too many strategies not very well. 5. These are the times where the rubber meets the road. 6. Many people will have goals they wish to achieve but rather than cracking on with it, will procrastinate. It is important to have the ‘start now get perfect later’ mentality. As you progress you will instinctively see more risks and problems. Start small and therefore the risks are going to be smaller.
