EP 85: A New Frontier: Regenerative Medicine, pt. 2 with Jeremy Pont

27m · Published 21 Dec 09:00

Welcome back to part two of our interview with Jeremy Pont of Phoenix Regenerative Consultants in Lillesand, Norway. Part one focused mainly on partnership and the benefits of complimentary skill sets and areas of expertise. Part two is focused more on the clinical side and the benefits of regenerative medicine.

Jeremy spoke to the limitations of the more conservative approach to pain and injuries, and how at Phoenix Helse, they have seen great improvements for their patients. Additionally, because regenerative medicine, specifically PRP and stem cell treatments, is somewhat uncharted territory, at least in terms of mainstream medical treatments, there’s a ton of opportunity for learning and leading the charge.

Jeremy and his business partner David have been working with world-renowned scholars and researchers in their quest to expand their understanding of the powers of regenerative medicine, and as such, they’ve expanded their business model to include consulting for other practitioners and providers who want to learn more about regenerative methods.

They’re working on multiple fellowships with the NIMS University in Jaipur, India, and Jeremy is pursuing his PhD as well, which means not only is he expanding his knowledge and getting top-notch training, he is also teaching as part of his program. Additionally, they’ve opened a research and development clinic in New Delhi, India, and will be opening to the general public in February 2023.

With all the wisdom and knowledge Jeremy shared about the business of partnership and expanding knowledge, Jeremy’s parting wisdom is right up my alley in the personal development realm:

  • Try to read one book per month that’s to do with personal growth.
  • Live by the compass, not the clock.
  • Write 3 goals each morning, and let 2 of them be about your happiness and presence; it makes all of your life easier and supports your patients in their experience of you.

EP 84: Partnership: The good, the bad and the awesome, pt. 1 with Jeremy Pont

28m · Published 14 Dec 09:00

This week we’re joined by Jeremy Pont of Phoenix Regenerative Consultants in Lillesand, Norway. This is part one of our interview.

Jeremy talks about the challenges and benefits of business partnership with a provider whose skillset complements yours.

Jeremy strongly encourages writing everything down, getting crystal clear about all the possible contingencies, running the gamut from managing staff, to how side hustles are perceived, to larger decisions that require input from all invested parties.

The journey to partnership and being in partnership is likely not for the faint of heart, but in hearing Jeremy talk about working with his partner David, I definitely hear from him that this partnership has been positive. The professional growth, expansion of knowledge, and locking arms with another provider who was tired of seeing his patients run out of non-pharmaceutical options, is a powerful combination to build a practice.

Come back next week to hear more about regenerative medicine, how to piece together the right kind of education to expand your own practice into this modality if you like, and how to support your patients in healing and increasing their functionality.

EP 83: Strategic Financial Planning with Hannah Smolinski

31m · Published 07 Dec 17:33

In today’s episode, I’m speaking with the wise Hannah Smolinski of Clara CFO Group.

She shares her best tips on how to grow and scale into 7 figures and beyond with strategic financial leadership, and using money as a tool for growth. We also talked about preserving the owner’s energy and decreasing the opportunity costs associated with owners doing all the things in their business.

You won’t want to miss when we talk about Zone of Genius, and what that means for business owners, particularly with respect to reducing fatigue and increasing the “psychic benefits” of removing and delegating what doesn’t belong on the owner’s plate.

Hannah stressed the importance of getting crystal clear about what you really want to achieve in the next 3-5 years, and being incredibly intentional while implementing strategies and changes to achieve your goals. I love how she breaks down how she and her team ask not only what their client’s goals are, but also what they’re willing to do to achieve those goals.

Her parting wisdom is:

  • Don’t let finances and numbers intimidate you
  • It’s really about doing 3rd grade math (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) so it doesn’t have to be scary
  • Remember that your numbers tell a story, so you can get a lot of valuable information by knowing your numbers
  • When you’re ready to work with a strategic finance specialist, make sure you find a partner you can trust and feel comfortable asking all the questions, because there are no dumb questions in finance

I really enjoyed our conversation and could have talked about the importance of strategic finance with her for hours. I am sure you’ll learn a lot from this episode, so you know what to do.

Grab a beverage or a snack and settle-in to listen to Hannah and her incredible wisdom.

EP 82: Master of Business Leadership with Phil Johnson

33m · Published 30 Nov 09:00

In today’s episode, I’m speaking with Phil Johnson, founder and CEO of Master of Business Leadership (MBL) and veteran tech executive. Phil overcame adversity as a kid when he was diagnosed with dyslexia when taught himself to learn differently. He has helped organizations generate more than $1.5B by teaching leaders how to improve their emotional intelligence.

Phil shares how leaders can develop Emotional Intelligence, their EQ, and how that is more valuable than IQ, and anyone can develop EQ.

We discuss the value of leadership understanding and developing their EQ, and why that is important for provider-owners.

You won’t want to miss when he talks about resistance to change and our biological and sociological hardwiring.

He identifies our 3 primary sources of resistance to change as the following. The first two are biological, and the third is sociological:

  • Amygdala - don’t leave the safety of the cave. Fight, flight and freeze are at the mercy of fear.
  • Existing habits - neural network pathways and their internal battle for dominance.
  • Sociological resistance to change - people around us don’t want us to change for fear of having to change themselves.

EP 81: REPLAY: Why Time Management Doesn’t Work with Tracy Cherpeski

24m · Published 23 Nov 16:46

Thank you for joining us today for a new episode of Thriving Practice.

This episode I’m sharing my own wisdom. I’m sure you’ve experienced the rush, never having time to do what you really want to do, always having unfinished tasks, and feeling like your business might swallow you whole, feeling. Most of us have been there.

If you’re feeling the following:

  • Overworked.
  • Becoming disillusioned with being in business for yourself and are considering going back to work for a different organization (the VERY THING you left due to burnout and other frustrations!) Listen to episode 9 for more on burnout.
  • You’re not experiencing the time and financial freedom you envisioned when you started your business.

Then you’re in the right place today. Here’s why “Time Management” doesn’t work, and what you can do about it.

Time management implies control and getting more stuff done. Time Leadership implies directing your attention and focus toward the activities that contribute positively to the bottom line of your business, and which bring you a sense of joy and accomplishment.

Time Leadership is wrapped around 3 pillars:

  1. Discovery - ask yourself: “What do I really want?”
  2. Analysis - how much do you cost your business, and how much money are you leaving on the table by doing things better suited to other team members, or outsourced?
  3. (Inspired) Action - once you’re clear, ask yourself what the next best step is. What can you accomplish right now that contributes positively to the bottom line or growth of your business?

Make sure to answer these questions, and it’ll start to become very clear where best to direct your energy and efforts in your business.

Please be sure to subscribe and leave us a rating and review if you feel inclined. Leaving a review is an excellent way to share your thoughts and gratitude so practitioners and entrepreneurs alike can find us and learn from the incredible, FREE, evergreen content we’re providing.

EP 80: How to Scale Using Medical Virtual Assistants with Beth Lachance

37m · Published 16 Nov 19:20

In today’s episode, I’m speaking with Beth Lachance, CEO of REVA Global Medical Virtual Assistants, a company providing healthcare professionals with unmatched virtual solutions. REVA Global is headquartered in Connecticut, and they employ VAs in the Philippines.

Beth shares how hiring a virtual professional can support a medical practice or hospital center at a fraction of the expense of hiring a full time employee.

A virtual medical assistant can support in many roles:

  • New patient intake forms
  • Scheduling
  • Insurance verification and prior authorization
  • Review of referral information
  • Electronic medical records
  • Revenue cycles, including billing, claims and collections
  • Other administrative tasks

This kind of service can help with improving scalability by increasing profitability, number of patients you can see, maintaining your team and improving morale across the board.

Beth’s parting wisdom is:

  • Look at who’s on your staff now. Are they in the right seat doing what they’re supposed to do , and what they’re best at? Take stock, sit with them and have the conversation to learn about whether they’re able to work to their highest potential.
  • Delegate tasks to someone else, whether it’s to a VMA or someone else in your practice

The benefits and much lower financial investment in working with VMAs is a viable solution to an age-old problem, which in the medical world usually means in order to see more patients, you need to hire more staff to keep up with all of the administrative and billing tasks associated with a higher patient load. Working with an agency that does their own vetting, onboarding and training can reduce the risks for you as a practice owner, while increasing your capacity and scalability.

Beth Lachance is leading REVA Global Medical in vision and the day-to-day business operations securing the functionality of the business to drive extensive and sustainable growth. EP 79: Virtual Healthcare Staffing Solutions with Dr. Steven Kupferman

34m · Published 09 Nov 09:00

In today’s episode, I’m speaking with Dr. Steven Kupferman, oral and maxillofacial surgeon and virtual medical staffing expert, and co-founder and CEO of MED-VA, a virtual medical and dental staffing agency.

Dr. Steve talked about physician burnout and the causes of burnout. We discussed how doctors aren’t trained to take care of themselves, so with patient loads and demands high, plus all of the moving parts to keep a practice operating and growing, there’s a real need for additional support.

There’s a lot to take into account where healthcare is concerned, particularly with outsourcing, not to mention virtual outsourcing. Dr. Steve’s agency vets, hires and trains nurses and other skilled medical administrative professionals who are well-versed in all administrative tasks for medical and dental practices.

Most of the virtual assistants MEDVA hires are located in the Philippines, have been trained and worked as nurses and other medical professionals, and speak fluent English. For many of their VAs, the grinding long commute and crazy hours working in hospitals led to burnout. The Medical VA option is a win for both the virtual assistant and the practice owner, and as you know, in business, it’s important to look for multiple wins, and this is definitely a great and cost-effective option for a busy practice.

Dr. Steve’s parting wisdom is:

  • Trust and take a leap of faith
  • Think outside of the box
  • Focus on getting the right kind of support for you, and it will be the best thing for you.

Peace of mind. Cost-effective, high-quality solutions to consistent and sometimes persistent problems. These are just some of the benefits of exploring whether working with a medical virtual assistant (or several!)

So, I invite you to grab a beverage or a snack and settle-in to listen to Dr. Steve Kupferman and his incredible insights.

Bio:

Dr. Steven Kupferman, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of MEDVA, holds M.D. and D.M.D. degrees from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and from Harvard School of Dental Medicine, respectively, and he brings nearly two decades of experience in the healthcare industry. He is the founding physician of LACOMS, Los Angeles’s premier Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Center, where he first pioneered the use of Virtual Assistants to optimize the management of his practice while simultaneously improving the quality of patient care. EP78: Psychedelics for Everyone with Matt Zemon

45m · Published 02 Nov 08:00

In today’s episode, I’m speaking with Matt Zemon, psychedelic medicine expert, best-selling author, and CEO and co-founder of Happÿÿ, a mental wellness company that specializes in psychedelic-assisted ketamine therapy along with digital therapeutics that promote life-transforming outcomes.

I learned so much in this interview with Matt. We talked about the benefits of therapeutic psychedelics, who could benefit from using them, and what micro-dosing is. We also talked about expanding human potential, which I really found intriguing.

As Matt said, psychedelics aren’t a cure; they are a catalyst to change. He shared some statistics that were pretty mind-blowing: in one study, 89% of individuals with depression and anxiety experienced an improvement after a ketamine protocol. There are other psychedelics that show promise in treatment for mental health disorders, though the only psychedelic that has been approved by the FDA for this specific use is esketamine, a nasal spray for treatment-resistant depression and acute suicidal thinking. Ketamine was approved as an anesthetic in 1970, but using it to address psychiatric conditions is considered “off-label,” so it can be accessed with a prescription from a medical provider.

Matt stressed the importance of finding the right prescriber who will help you in the way that best supports your healing, either with a guide, coaching and journaling, or in another way. What I found really interesting is the success people experience when they combine the ketamine therapy with setting a clear intention, meditation, journaling, and focusing on creating new, healthy habits.

Matt’s parting wisdom is:

  • Remember not all providers are equal, so get clear about the treatment and support you desire if you choose to explore psychedelic therapy
  • If you choose to go the retreat route, ask a lot of questions about number of participants, prescriber credentials and medical capabilities so you find the right fit for the experience you want to have

From the practical application of ketamine and other psychedelic therapies to the business model of Matt’s telehealth company, I found this conversation both intriguing and promising. Imagine a world where people can be free of the debilitating effects of trauma and treatment-resistant mental health conditions. To me, it’s mind-blowing.

Bio:

Entrepreneur to Psychonaut: Matt Zemon is the CEO and Co-Founder of HAPPŸŸ, a mental wellness company that specializes in psychedelic-assisted ketamine therapy along with digital therapeutics that promote life-transforming outcomes.

As an entrepreneur in the wellbeing sector, Matt was the co-founder and Chief Strategy Officer of Psychable, an online community connecting people who would like to explore the healing power of psychedelics with a network of practitioners and psychedelic- based treatments, and the co-founder of Take2Minutes, a nonprofit dedicated to helping individuals improve their mental health and wellbeing. Prior to focusing on wellbeing, Matt had two other successful exits.

Matt is the author of Psychedelics for Everyone: A Beginner’s Guide to these Powerful Medicines for Anxiety, Depression, Addiction, PTSD, and Expanding Consciousness and received his Master of Science in Psychology and Neuroscience of Mental Health with honors

from King’s College London.

EP77: How to Appraise Your Time with Tracy Cherpeski

18m · Published 26 Oct 08:00

Join Tracy for another solo episode to learn how to valuate, or appraise, your time. Tracy reviews her 3 pillar system of Time Leadership, with a deep-dive into Pillar 2: Analysis.

Pillar 1: Discovery.

Pillar 2: Analysis.

Pillar 3: (Inspired) Action.

Tracy walks you through how to track your time for two weeks, categorize how you’ve spent your time, and place value on each task you perform.

You’ll take your data (how you’ve spent the last two weeks) and categorize all 15 minute intervals into 6 categories:

  1. Tasks that only you can do (i.e. patient care that relies on your expertise)
  2. Tasks that you’re doing that someone else on your staff could (or should!) do (i.e., additional charting, transcription, scheduling, administrative tasks, even if you can do them or can do them “faster” than your team)
  3. Tasks you ought to be doing, but don’t have time to do
  4. Tasks you’d love to do, but aren’t currently doing for the same lack of time
  5. Things you think about
  6. Things you worry about

You’ll assign monetary value to each of your categories, and hold onto your hat, because you might be a little shocked…but fear not, data is your friend, and this information will help you make your plan to structure your time differently going forward.
