How Gratitude Makes You a Better Leader with Jennifer Tsang, PCC

28m · Published 25 Nov 16:00

Gratitude: During the Thanksgiving holiday, many of us in the U.S. will be thinking about gratitude & give thanks for what we have in our lives. But, what does gratitude really mean? How do you think about gratitude? For me, gratitude is more than something we think about once a year, or more than just some cliches we write inside of a journal. Instead, it can be used as a tool to learn from our experiences & to develop deep appreciation for the things we have been through in our lives. I use it as a daily practice to help me reflect & ground myself in the present moment. I use it as a way to honor the tools I have acquired, the lessons I have learned & give thanks to all of the things I have faced in order to make me a whole, resource & capable person. Gratitude isn't just something that we do, it's something that we are. Great leaders who practice gratitude are shown to be more successful in leading themselves & their teams. People want to work for humble leaders who appreciate them & value who they are as a whole person. This time of year is a great reminder for us to pause & reflect on our lives & the impact we are making each day. If you don't have a gratitude practice, now would be a great time to start.

I challenge you to re-imagine gratitude & to find a practice you can develop each day to make you a better parent, educator, leader & citizen of this planet.

How to Tackle Conflict in Leadership with Jennifer Tsang, PCC

32m · Published 11 Nov 16:00

Conflict: I know what you're probably thinking, you handle conflict well, right? Or, you might be thinking, I try to avoid conflict like the plague. Whatever your feelings are, conflict is all around us. The world is filled with conflict, discourse & resistance. We can't really escape it. If we are able to embrace conflict & get really comfortable with being uncomfortable, we might not have to run from it or try to meet it head on. Instead, can we use it as an opportunity to learn more about ourselves? I believe that a lot of conflict we experience is actually a way of teaching us exactly where we are stuck & what we still have to learn about ourselves. If we can flip it into a powerful tool to discover deeper meaning, we can enrich our lives, while leaving people whole, resourceful & capable. In today's episode I discuss practices you can develop to support yourself & others during conflict. Use every opportunity in life to learn more about yourself.

Managing Through Change with Jennifer Tsang, PCC

25m · Published 05 Nov 16:00

Change: Change is uncomfortable for most people. We've all been through it. At work, in our personal lives. It's a constant. We can experience a range of emotions from grief to excitement & anywhere in between. It can vary for most, but it's important to understand how to manage change effectively, especially if you're in a leadership position. It is your job to help define the 'Why' for your team and help them move through the change process, leaving them whole, resourceful and capable. We all need the time and the space to grieve change, and frankly, I don't think we do this well enough within organizations. We tend to look at change like a gender reveal party, where we develop creative ways to surprise people with the news when in reality, we need to be doing the oposite. We need to help people understand the change, give them time to process it and then help support them move through it. Change is not something that we just dump on people (or managers) & expect them to just be "flexible." In today's episode, I will explore this very important topic & use the question bank from our most recent #LeadersChat conversation on Twitter.

What is Your Leadership Legacy with Jennifer Tsang, PCC

30m · Published 21 Oct 16:00

Legacy: What is your legacy? What does a leadership legacy mean to you? How do you want to be remembered? These are all questions I ask myself in Episode #16 of the In the Lead Show. We all have gifts. We all have talents. We all have immense value to bring to the world and I think it's important we explore with ourselves what that means to us and how we want to bring it forward. The way I look at legacy is like tiny fingerprints. Every moment, every interaction, every action is a fingerprint and we have the ability to constantly shape ourselves and others everyday and leave our mark (or our legacy) on the world. Don't wait until you're gone to be remembered, focus on things you can do now to leave that imprint and create your own living legacy.

Show Highlights:

  1. Identify ways that you can define and cultivate your living legacy.
  2. Develop practices that will help you understand yourself better, so that you can manage and regulate yourself in a way that leaves you feeling whole.
  3. Use the power of reflection, curiosity and courage to heal your own wounds and extend that healing to others.

Great Leadership with the Internal Family System (IFS) with Susan Aiken, LMFT

1h 7m · Published 14 Oct 16:00

Internal Family Systems (IFS): Internal Family Systems is a powerfully transformative, evidence-based model of psychotherapy. We believe the mind is naturally multiple and that is a good thing. Our inner parts contain valuable qualities and our core Self knows how to heal, allowing us to become integrated and whole. In IFS all parts are welcome.IFS is a movement. A new, empowering paradigm for understanding and harmonizing the mind and, thereby, larger human systems. One that can help people heal and helps the world become a more compassionate place.

IFS can be a powerful tool for all Leaders (in all capacities) to understand themselves better so that they can then lead others, better. Our own internal healing can have a profound effect on how we leads others & how others experience us. By untying the internal knot can help open the door for compassion, trust, empathy & support.

Unconscious Bias in Leadership with Jennifer Tsang, PCC

49m · Published 07 Oct 16:00

Unconscious bias: Unconscious bias is often defined as prejudice or unsupported judgments in favor or against something or someone. I see as simply the way in which we see & experience the world around us. It's our lens. Biases as they are do not have to be a bad thing. They can help us make sense of the world and develop a better understanding of ourselves. As with anything, biases also have a shadow side and often cloud or decision making or how we choose to interact with others. Unconscious biases can have a larger shadow because we may not even be aware of those judgements or prejudices when making decisions as a leader in an organization or in laws that shape our communities. We all have bias, and the sooner we can accept this fact, the easier it becomes to see them and understand how it might be impacting everything that we do. In today's episode, Drea and I explore what unconscious bias means, the impact that it has on others and how we can start to develop more awareness around them to make decisions that have a positive impact.

Build Well-being into the Workplace

48m · Published 30 Sep 17:30

Well-being: What does well-being mean? Most organizations talk about it a lot & say that it is something that is important & that they take it seriously. This might be true, but often times, it is not felt across the organization. The meaning of well-being is actually multidimensional. It includes, physical, social, emotional, intellectual & spiritual balance that creates a sense of safety and empowerment. It's not something we just talk or write about, instead something we practice and feel. Additionally, it's a fluid experience and can mean something different from one person to the next. If we ask our employees to bring their whole selves to work, we must also acknowledge this requires being mindful of and cultivating well-being on a daily basis.
