88. Disrupting What You Have Told Yourself About Grief with Gina Moffa

58m · Published 11 Sep 15:46

Gina Moffa, LCSW, is a licensed clinical social worker in private practice and feels wholeheartedly that the people who sit on her couch are courageous. She shares in her latest book, Moving on Doesn't Mean Letting Go that "some of them would shudder to hear me call them “brave,” but it’s true."

Grief may be one of our most universal emotional experiences, but that doesn’t erase how isolating, confusing, and profoundly painful it can be. It takes a lot to look at your pain head-on, to see what’s under it.

Currently residing in New York City, Gina has helped thousands of people seeking treatment for grief and trauma. She knows first hand how hard a time people have in expressing their emotions, struggling to access their vulnerability. In this episode, Gina takes us through that forbidding voice echoed in every person who has told someone going through grief to get over it or move on.

After hearing it so many times from so many different people, Gina shares that it makes perfect sense that so many people haven't figured out how to be where they are in their grief experience.

And Gina feels it has EVERYTHING to do with the fact that we are living between the shock of the loss and the expectations of others. I hope you leave inspired by this conversation with her and give yourself permission to disrupt your own patterned thinking of what you think grief should look like, and recognize that it gets to look exactly as you see it.

Follow Gina Moffa @ginamoffalcsw on Instagram and look for her book, Moving On Doesn't Mean Letting Go, wherever books are sold.

87. The hard truth about being a disrupter

30m · Published 27 Aug 21:35

What happens when you tell and live your truth? You are in fact disrupting the status quo. And it's scary as hell.

In this solo episode, Dina reflects on what she has been reflecting on the hard truth of being a disrupter and what it takes to tell your truth.

She talks about why so many women who are disrupters - within their careers, to their families, to even in front of the mirror disrupting their own toxic thought patterns - can relate to how hard it can feel. Because to be a disrupter requires you to live by your truth.

She shares one of her favorite quotes by Muriel Rukeyser:

"What would happen if one woman told the truth about her life? The world would split open."

Our work as women is to name our fears of the world splitting open if we hsare our truth and help others and outselves to do it anyway. To see the ways in which we are silenced NOT as character flaws but as learned behaviors in a world that wants us quiet, compliant, and endlessly serving others’ needs before and instead of our own.

It is understandable, even to be expected — your fear of what might happen when/if you tell your truth. Still and always, it deserves to be spoken and lived — no matter what, all the time, endlessly, and in every single context and conversation possible.

In this episode, Dina shares three reminders to be aware of when you are leaning into the discomfort of telling your truth and disrupting the status quo. Because knowing/anticipating the “havoc” that will potentially result when you DO tell your truth is all the data you need to know this is EXACTLY what is required for you to be fully yourself.

What you fear serves you. It’s a powerful form of discernment AND it’s the evidence that you can trust yourselfandyour truth enough to speak and live it.

85. Disrupting our Notions of Feminism and Ending Violence against Women with Lina Abirafeh

48m · Published 30 Jun 11:00

In this episode, Dina sits down with long-time friend, Lina AbiRafeh to unpack what led her to pursue a career in women's rights and speaking up against violence against women.

In all honesty, when Dina met Lina over 20 years ago, she embodied disruption and being your own blueprint. Sitting across from Lina in London over coffee while she was pursuing her PhD, Dina looked up to Lina in so many ways - mostly for her brazen, tell it like it is way - that is just purely infectious.

In a word, Lina is committed to building a better world for women. She is a global women’s rights expert and gender equality advocate with decades of experience worldwide.

An activist, academic, and an aid worker with a 25-year track record in creating positive change for women in over 20 countries around the world - Afghanistan, Haiti, Central African Republic, Papua New Guinea, and more - Lina speaks and publishes frequently on a range of women’s issues – on global stages and in the international media.

Lina is a force to be reckoned with. She is someone who is integral to the very thinking and action in the field of woman's rights. Not only will she tell it like it is, she'll give you a healthy dose of wit. And if you're fortunate to be invited to her home, she'll put out a huge spread.

A feisty disrupter herself, Lina shows us in the episode what disruption has looked like over the course of a career spanning over two decades and what disruption looks like now.

She has the unique ability to pull together the right people, in the right place and time to make phenomenal change happen.

82. First the Disruption, then the Grief

20m · Published 26 May 21:10

Identity can be a weird thing. The way we think of ourselves, how we define ourselves, the story we tell ourselves about who we are, all of that comes together to create our identity.

But what happens when we reach a crossroads where we are clear that we have to let go of a certain part of our identity - or pehaps all of it entirely?

In this solo episode, Dina unpacks a topic that doesn't get enough attention, and that's grief. But not in the sense you would think. We talk about grieving the loss of an identity we have let go of in order to move forward.

For many women, they have planted the seeds of courage to go after their truth and what truly matters to them. But it's not a process that is without its moments of uncertainty and doubt. It's a veritable rollercoaster of emotions. Mourning the loss of the person you used to be, the relationships that you built around that identity and the dreams that no longer serve you. And all the while, realizing that letting go is the only way to grow.

Dina shares how taking the time to reflect on your identity is not only necessary, it's a radical act of self-determination, acknowledging pieces that will never be the same and establishing new pieces of the self that are built on things that came before.
