Birth, Death, and the Evolving Cycle with Jessica Sobey / ETS10

1h 2m · Published 10 Jul 04:00

It's my pleasure to highlight one of my dearest client's of the Nurse Rx Community. Jess and I have been working together for over 18 months and are truly kindred souls.

Jess is an RN in Maine USA and after dabbling in a few different areas of health and nursing, including being a member of her hospitals infectious diseases team, she found her true passion in labor and delivery. She beautifully relates the experience of birth to so many transcendent experiences of life and her heart just sings when she talks about it.

In 2022 she made the brave decision to walk away from her job instead of waiting to be fired for her personal choices regarding the vaccine mandates in her state.  Heartbroken and wary from the exhaustion she was experiencing beforehand giving selflessly and tirelessly to her job, her patients, and her colleagues she witnessed so much unfold that left her morally and ethically at a crossroads, as many others have as well.

Sandra's Key Takeaways

  • Life is a series of birth and death cycles that hold many magical moments, and incredible gifts if we are open to see them and receive them.
  • The fall of the corporate health care system and the unveiling of the mistreatment and abuse of its workers.
  • The hero identity and the difficulty of caring for ourselves when so much is on the line.
  • Trusting that we will land when the world seems to be flipped upside down and you're being thrown into square one of life.

Integrating Holistic Nursing with Bryanna Reilly | ETS09

54m · Published 01 Jul 13:00

How can we as nurses show up and co-create a holistic health care system that addresses people in the deep ways people need?

In today's episode, my guest Bryanna and I are exploring the heavy impact of nursing on our lives as a whole and how the original conditioning influence of our young selves sets the foundation for the burnout and challenges we face in the future.

Sandra's Key Takeaways:

1. The constant pressure and expectations of being a women and nursing grad impacts our sense of self and our self care
2. Internalizing the traumatic experiences of nursing
3. Owning your role and responsibility in your life and career and facing your emotions
4. Tapping into the origins of our beliefs and the foundation of our behavior patterns.
5. Differences in wellness coaching and nurse coaching, and the similarities.

About the Bryanna Reilly
Bry is a Board Certified Nurse Coach. She supports nurses in a 1:1 or group setting while using coaching strategies and mindfulness practices to help them unlearn self sacrifice, create realistic self care, and build relationships that give back to them. 6 years as a Registered Nurse, Bry has spent the bulk of her career working in the psychiatric, critical
care, and medical-surgical specialties. Bry is dedicated to the holistic health of those she serves so that they can harmonize their professional life in alignment with their personal life.

Institutional Betrayal and Nursing with Jasper Pare | ETS08

50m · Published 10 Jun 13:00

Recently terminated RN Jasper Pare joins me for a closeup look at what led him to choose to lose his job as a nurse. He shares vulnerably with us the impact this has all had on his life, both professionally and personally.

What's incredible to witness, though, is his resilient mindset of growth and opportunity. Instead of allowing this devastating betrayal to lead him into a pit of despair, he has chosen to rise above it and see all the gifts that revealed themselves to him.

There are so many layers to the decisions of our nursing profession to allow the very code of ethics and morality and our advocacy for patient rights in health care to be eroded with the medical mandates we have seen. And this is just one of the many stories of institutional betrayal so similar to his.

How do we move forward from this erosion of trust and integrity in our system?
How do we heal as individuals and as a collective culture of health care professionals?

These are the questions of importance.

Sandra's Takeaways:

  • Are male nurses experiencing the same high level of heavy expectations as their women colleagues?
  • Red flags revealed and the questions so many are asking… why are alternate views and conflicting research being left out and censored?
  • Medical mandates and the wake of devastation.
  • Healing from institutional betrayal
  • Shifting our perspective

56m · Published 06 May 13:00

Jennifer Kirk and I take you through a conversation through nursing challenges,
moral distress, compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma and how that can affect our lives as nurses.

We also highlight the health care systems set up that leave us vulnerable to errors that impact us and our mental health in devastating ways and how we can set ourselves up to be supported with mentorship and seeking help and guidance before we are circling the drain in despair.

Sandra's Key Takeaways:

  • The Baggage Of Nursing
  • Boundaries
  • Heart Math Breathing
  • Bullying
  • Compassion Fatigue

About the Guest:

Jennifer Kirk BA, BN, RN, LP is the founder of Dragonfly Meadows - offering Equine
Facilitated Learning workshops for RN'S, LPN'S and other professional caregivers since 2014.

Jennifer is a practicing Registered Nurse with 17 years of experience. As an RN who has worked the majority of her career in critical care, she knows all too well the challenges nurses.  Throughout her career, she has experienced the changes in the health care system that have  impacted nurses: increased workload, low morale, high turnover rates, moral injury, compassion  fatigue, vicarious trauma, and poor work-life balance, to name a few.
Jennifer took her first workshop in Equine Facilitated Learning in 2012 and wanted to find a way to help nurses understand the stressors of their careers. A magazine article on Compassion Fatigue was an "A-ha" moment for her and she has been offering workshops for Nurses since 2014. My hope with this conversation is that you will be encouraged to reach out to someone you trust for support and find the hope and healing you need and truly deserve. You are not alone.

The more we share our stories, the more open we are to having conversations like the one in this episode, the more we can connect and heal ourselves and use our stories help others do the same.

There is hope and healing for all of us, let’s start on your journey of healing today.

MEET PAIGE MATHISON

Paige has been a psychiatric nurse since 2009. She practiced rural mental health nursing in Manitoba for 7 years prior to moving to beautiful British Columbia. Once in Kelowna, she worked in the emergency department, acute and intensive psychiatry along with a substance use and assessment programs within a hospital setting.

After many years of a decreasing job satisfaction, in 2019, she applied to a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology program with the intent to provide services to healthcare providers.

Unfortunately, in January of 2020, a workplace incident lead to an 8 month mental health leave and an Adjustment Disorder Diagnosis. The initial guilt and shame associated with the experience has lead to further advocation for mental health prioritization for healthcare professionals.

Now that her masters is complete, it is time to help those who help others! Also, a stand-up comedian, she recognizes the importance of laughter and lightness in finding a sense of well-being.

Division, Repression, and Collective Trauma in the Nursing Profession | ETS02

56m · Published 04 Mar 14:00

Recently I openly expressed my views and beliefs regarding the unethical and immoral vaccine mandates being forced upon nurses and others in our country. I pride myself on truth and authentic expression, however holding this belief has made me the recipient of discrimination from my union partners.

Repression and trauma have been relevant issues in the nursing profession for decades but now adding in the division and pressures of Covid-19 and differences in our personal and professional beliefs has many nurses on the edge and silenced more than ever before.

Today on End the Silence Katrina Stephenson and I bring some of that toxicity into the light.

SANDRA’S TAKEAWAYS:

Acknowledging Our Personal Triggers, Growth & Resilience
The Division In The Nursing Profession
Our Uniqueness And Diversity
Safety In Healing And Owning The Impact Of Our Actions
Health Care System Being An Unsafe Environment
The Power Of Peer Support

MEET KATRINA STEPHENSON:

As a nurse that has worked and trained in three different provinces and various health authorities, I have seen various healthcare environments, many not trauma informed. My Nursing Peers have been exposed to stress on a whole other level since the COVID-19 pandemic started in March 2020. We are within a mental health crisis. We are losing nurses to overdoses and dying by suicide. We have nurses leaving the profession. New graduates that have PTSD and will not stay in the profession. Too many of our workplaces are sick and psychological wellness is not improving.

As a Nurse supporting other Nurse’s wellness I have seen how Covid had torn us even further apart. I believe it is essential for us all to care and respect each other. It is not Them vs Us. We need to approach each other with compassion and non-judgment. We can support each other in a manner that promotes mental wellness so to reduce shame, guilt, stigma and discrimination.

Storytelling is my way and a powerful way to support changing the negative climate surrounding many mental health conditions and injuries we see in Nursing.

In 2020, I found Nurse 2 Nurse Peer Support, a confidential, evidenced based, trauma informed peer support wellness program to advocate, educate and support our nursing peers to prevent, mitigate and care for OSI. It is time for change and for us Nurses to have the supports necessary to continue the work we love to do.

And who better to support and bring understanding to our needs of our community than one nurse to another. www.n2nps.com

MEET SANDRA PAYNE:

Sandra Payne is a Nurse and Master Certified Holistic Wellness Trauma Informed Coach and the owner of Sandra Payne Wellness and founder of the exclusive Nurse Rx Coaching Program.

After 13 years working within the traditional health care system and experiencing firsthand the challenges that come with nursing, Sandra has a keen understanding of the heavy unrealistic expectations in nursing, the moral distress, and the stigma that keeps many nurse’s struggles with depression, anxiety, and trauma hidden in silence.

Out of this intimate understanding was born the Nurse Rx Program through which women nurses learn and practice a host of skills and exercises to manage stress, process emotions, and heal trauma within a safe group collective of other nurses.
