23: Our Altered Life with Charlie Beswick

41m · Published 25 Jan 09:00

In this conversation with Charlie we discuss the highs, lows, challenges and triumphs of a life altered by facial disfigurement & special needs

She is a first class psychology graduate, award-winning blogger, published author, charity founder, professional speaker, trainer and coach. She’s mum to teenagers Oliver and Harry and a self-confessed cheesaholic and gin lover!

Based on the lessons learned during her journey as a special needs parent, plunged into a world she never expected or was prepared for, Charlie shares the incredible impact of our own self talk and empowers people to break through their own limiting beliefs to find the happiness and success they deserve in life.

Wisdom from Charlie you won't want to miss:

  •  How she learnt to find compassion for people who stopped to stare at her son's facial disfigurement instead of being battle ready
  •  How it's possible to see gifts in everything
  •  How she stopped fighting and grieving all that she didn't have by accepting what she had
  •  Understanding that if her son hadn't been born the way he had then he wouldn't be the child that she loves
  •  Facing her fears changed everything
  • Developing a self talk method to change our mindset

"Instead of a waltz through life it's more of a cha-cha, but we never stop dancing!" - Charlie Beswick

20: Surthrival with Marnie Grundman

39m · Published 03 Jan 12:00

Marnie is an unbelievable force for good who now speaks out for other young runaways and missing people

Marnie Grundman has been featured on over 100 major television and radio shows in Canada, the United States and Europe including TEDx, Breakfast Television, Global News, CP24 News, The Marilyn Denis Show, Young Justice, Here and Now CBC, News Talk 1010, CJAD, and the National Association of Adult Survivors of Child Abuse.

A child who belonged to no one, missing at the age of 13, she spent years living on the streets where she experienced the worst of humanity first-hand. In her darkest hours, while living in an apartment complex sauna, she was sure that everyone who knew her had forgotten that she even existed. It was in those desperate hours that she decided she was paying up front for a better life that lay ahead.

What began as a story of healing led to one of triumph, of the power of the human spirit, of one woman's surthrival against all odds. Marnie has since become an advocate for the missing, working to change the perception of runaway children so they might finally get the help they desperately need.

While her number one mission is to break the stereotypes related to runaways and people experiencing homelessness she also speaks on a variety of topics designed to motivate people to reach beyond the stars.

Some key points from our interview:
* How she came to realise that due to her Mother's mental health that her behaviour towards   her wasn't personal
* How she managed to break the cycle in negative parenting when she became a mum
* How she recognised that healthier choices can become habits through practice
* How she learnt to stop listening to her inner 14 year old who's first reaction was to bolt when times got tough
* How she realises that everyday she makes the choice to be happy

"You can survive anything and everything" - Marnie Grundman

19: Black Lives Matter with Orlando Bowen

38m · Published 23 Dec 10:00

Loved talking to Orlando as he is such a force for change and good, and has this incredibly resilient approach to see gifts everywhere, even in extreme adversity!

Orlando Bowen is a former professional football player and currently a community advocate and inspirational speaker. In 2004, after his fourth season as a pro athlete, two undercover police officers who did not identify themselves, approached him in a parking lot.

They accused him of dealing drugs, kicked and beat him leading to a severe concussion. Bowen was acquitted of any wrongdoing and just before his acquittal, one of the officers was charged with possession and trafficking cocaine and eventually convicted and sent to prison.

Bowen’s football career, however, was over. Even though the injury ended his career prematurely, Bowen chose to inspire others through his work with young people and as a public speaker.

As a sign of his character, he publicly forgave the two officers for their actions and works to equip people to see the humanity in others and to be willing to stand for that humanity.

He also founded a youth leadership charity called One Voice One Team Youth Leadership Organization to empower and equip youth to see beyond their current circumstances and make a difference in the lives of others.

Some key points from our interview:
* How there were so many similarities with the murder of George Floyd and his situation, as he really thought he was going to die on that evening
* How he faith helped him to believe that there was something bigger for him that playing sport
* How he has used this experience to give him a new perspective which he is grateful for
* How this has made him realise that his purpose in life is to serve others
* How his youth leadership charity (One Voice, One Team)  is a gift for community and is passionate about making a difference
* How he recognises that we all have gifts to share even if they come from a place of adversity

18: My Last Step Backward with Tasha Schuh

41m · Published 21 Dec 16:00

Can you imagine becoming paralysed at sixteen and getting to a place one day where you would be able to say you are  grateful for your accident and wouldn't undo it if you could?

I loved my conversation with Tasha as her positivity is infectious!  She has gone on to be an inspirational speaker and I can understand why

After a tragic theatre accident that left her paralyzed from the chest down, Tasha  has discovered invaluable lessons that resonate with audiences of all demographics.

Since 2007, she has been travelling across her home country of the USA and challenging listeners to overcome and persevere, no matter what life throws at them

The importance of this message became painfully clear in 2014, when a close friend lost her son to suicide.  Logan was only 14 years old.  Her PATH curriculum is a pledge to Logan and gives youth a voice to reach out, ask for help and know that there is hope.

Tasha has two degrees, drives, was crowned Ms Wheelchair USA in 2012 and has received so many awards recognising the work she does with young people, people with disabilities. And inspiring others  She is the author of two books and lives in Wisconsin with her Husband Doug, who is also her manager

Some key points from our interview:
* How she focuses on what she can do rather than what she can't
* How she doesn't want anyone to pity her as she loves her life
* How she learnt to take it one at a time during her recovery
* How the power of positive and encouraging music really helped her on her darkest days
* How she feels that her accident woke her up
* How her practice of keeping a gratitude list helps to remind her everyday of all the good she has in her life

"That word Unbroken really defines my life" - Tasha Schuh
