Yale Sleep Experts Dr. Kryger and Lynelle Schneeberg: Sleep Is Everything

45m · Published 28 Jan 00:00

Everyone knows that sleep is important. But for endurance athletes, it’s even more important—and also more challenging in certain ways. Does working out late in the day affect sleep quality? Does poor sleep the night before a race impact performance, and if so, what can be done about it? In this week’s podcast, Hanna and Matt get answers to these and other questions from Yale University sleep experts Meir Kryger and Lynelle Schneeberg. Be sure to subscribe, so you’re notified when new episodes drop every Thursday.

Jessica Schnier: Coaching With Kindness

42m · Published 21 Jan 00:00

Nine days into her yearlong Coaches of Color Initiative apprenticeship, Jessica Schnier sat down with Hanna and Matt to tell her story, give honest feedback on how the apprenticeship experience is going so far, and share her hopes and plans for the future. Wise beyond her years, Jessica also explains her coaching philosophy and offers one of the best tips we’ve ever heard on dealing with rough patches in races.

COCI is a resource-intensive program, and we need your help to give Jessica and future apprentices the best possible experience. One way to do so is by signing up for the 80/20 Endurance Virtual Challenge, a monthlong festival of virtual races that we created to help athletes kickstart their year in fitness. Choose from 20-minute and 80-minute time-trial options for swimmers, cyclists, and runners. It costs just $20.80 (plus a small processing fee) to sign up, and each registration comes bundled with a free, four-week training plan created by 80/20 Endurance coaches. Emma-Kate Lidbury: A Triathlon Fairytale

46m · Published 06 Jan 21:00

For those of us who love the sport of triathlon, Emma-Kate Lidbury has lived a fairytale life. Like many of us, Emma-Kate discovered triathlon as an adult, doing her first race on a lark with no expectations. Unlike most of us, however, she not only fell in love with the sport but also discovered that she was extraordinarily good at it—so good that she went on to turn pro and win six Ironman 70.3 events and crack the top ten in 70.3 Worlds on two occasions.

But the fairytale doesn’t end there. Upon retiring from the sport, Emma-Kate took a job as the managing editor of Triathlete Magazine, where she gets to think, talk, and write about the sport we love every day. In this week’s podcast, Emma-Kate shares highlights from her fairytale life as well as lessons she learned along the way that can help others live out their fantasies in the sport.  Be sure to subscribe, so you’re notified when new episodes drop every Thursday.

Marco Altini, PhD: The Man Behind the Movement

50m · Published 23 Dec 18:00

With each passing day, more and more athletes are choosing to monitor their heart rate variability (HRV). No one deserves more credit for this trend than Marco Altini, PhD, creator of the industry-leading HRV4Training smartphone app. We’ll have to invite Marco back on the podcast another time to get his life story, but in this interview Matt and Hanna maintain a laser focus on the main topic, receiving a lucid and comprehensive education in heart rate variability from the man who knows more about it than anyone else. Whether you’re already monitoring HRV and want to get out of it or you’re wondering what all the fuss is about and want to learn more before you commit, this episode is a must-listen.
