462: Man Throws Hatchet At Parkgoers, Hides In Sewer, Threatens Officers | True Crime Brief

4m · Published 07 Oct 15:00
A man, aged 37, allegedly flung a hatchet and then ran down a storm drain, where he remained for many hours while police and SWAT officials tried to negotiate with him.

Bloomington police responded to a call of a guy "throwing a steel rod at many individuals" at Seminary Park on September 20 at 9:30 a.m. Upon arrival, police learned that the suspect, later identified as Eli Swartzentruber, had gone to a vehicle in the Kroger parking lot and retrieved a hatchet. He allegedly went back to Seminary Park with the hatchet, approached the group, and threw it.

Reportedly, he made a foot escape.

Bloomington Police officers reportedly searched the area and located garments matching Swartzentruber's description hanging from a railing "near a very huge storm drain" on First Street. Swartzentruber "advised them not to enter the storm drain and that he was armed with rifle" after police reportedly shouted into the drain for him to come out.

In case the police tried to enter, he allegedly threatened to kill them.

The police who arrived on the site radioed for support and "established a position of cover" until reinforcements arrived.

City officials provided blueprints of the storm drain system to the Critical Incident Response Team from the Bloomington Police Department and the Indiana State Police SWAT Team who responded to the location. In one part of the sewer, police "used technology designed to inspect the storm sewer in an attempt to locate the suspect but failed to do so," as they put it.

Investigators started taking off manhole covers and found a spent rifle cartridge that appeared to have been discarded. To aid in their search for Swartzentruber, the Critical Incident Response Team set off noise-flash diversionary devices deep into the sewer system.

Reportedly using a camera, the SWAT team dug roughly 500 feet into the sewer and found him. As per reports, Swartzentruber told authorities he was leaving by the north exit but really made his getaway via the south exit. There were reports that senior trooper with the Indiana State Police used his K9, Loki, to apprehend Swartzentruber.

Swartzentruber was rescued from the drain and transferred to the Indiana University Hospital for treatment. When he was taken into custody, he allegedly had an empty firearm on him.

A machete and a hand scythe were purportedly discovered by detectives during a check of the sewer. Swartzentruber was arrested for attempted violence with a deadly weapon and intimidation after being released from the hospital.

It took law officers over nine hours to negotiate with Swartzentruber, according to WXIN-TV.

Additional accusations have been brought against Swartzentruber on account of claims of sexual assault against a female victim. Around three hours before he allegedly hurled the hatchet, Swartzentruber allegedly went to a woman's home on West Koontz Road and requested her to "live underground" with him, according to the probable cause affidavit cited by WXIN. Swartzentruber allegedly pulled out a machete after she declined his offer and threatened him with a return visit, but she apparently ignored his warnings.

He supposedly came back a few minutes later to see if she was packed and ready to go. He allegedly began helping her pack even before she asked. He apparently confided in her that he had stolen a truck and would have to give it back before morning.

Supposedly in response to her stating that she wished to avoid jail time, he said "I will save you, free you. I've got this, and the cops will shoot me to death before they arrest me "meant to allude to the machete he held.

It is said that Swartzentruber then grabbed the woman by the throat, attempted to kiss her, undressed, and stuffed cash down her blouse. She allegedly feigned she needed to use the restroom before escaping through the front door. After allegedly fleeing while grabbing his pants, the woman reportedly reported the incident to the police.

Official documents reveal that he faces charges of sexual battery, residential entrance breaking and entering, and battery resulting in bodily injury.

462: 84 Year Old Found Guilty of Murdering Lawyer | True Crime Daily Brief

2m · Published 06 Oct 15:00
After losing a case against the victim's client, an 84-year-old man was found guilty of fatally shooting the victim's attorney in front of the victim's home.

The Jackson County Prosecutor's Office said in a statement that David Jungerman was found guilty of first-degree murder and armed criminal action on Thursday, September 22. Pickert was found dead the previous day.

Officers from the Kansas City Police Department arrived at a residence on October 25, 2017, around 8:07 am, to find Pickert dead in the driveway. A single bullet of "relative rarity" (.17 caliber) is said to have ended his life.

According to KSHB-TV Pickert was gunned killed after returning home from sending his sons to school. A source claims that upon hearing the gunshot, his wife ran out to offer assistance.

The white van that Jungerman was driving was reportedly sought by police in Kansas City after the tragic encounter. Officers apparently met with Jungerman not long after the shooting, but he wasn't brought into custody. A man matching Jungerman's description was seen by a witness near the van just before the murder, the witness reportedly told police. According to KSHB's reporting, Jungerman first said he was the only person with access to the white van and that he wasn't behind the wheel on the day Pickert was slain.

This is according to a report on WDAF-TV. A second witness came forward a couple of months after the incident to say that Jungerman had boasted to him that he had killed a lawyer and evaded capture.

On March 8, 2018, according to the Jackson County Prosecutor's Office, investigators searched Jungerman's vehicle after obtaining a warrant.

Reports indicate that shortly before Pickert was shot, Jungerman suspected that Pickert had stolen money from him in connection with a judgment that had been rendered against Pickert. According to WDAF, in 2012, Jungerman shot two homeless individuals he said broke into his store. Pickert defended Jeffrey Harris, who had lost a leg and was named as a plaintiff in the case against Jungerman.

Juries ruled with Harris on July 24, 2017, awarding him roughly $6 million in damages that Jungerman was ordered to pay. The jury said Harris should receive $750,000 in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages.

Jungerman will be sentenced Nov. 18.

462: Cannibal Admits To Eating 25-Year-Old | True Crime Daily Brief

2m · Published 05 Oct 15:00
A cannibal, 50 years old, admitted to killing a missing 25-year-old man and consuming his body parts.

According to the 35th Circuit Court's online records, Mark Latunski pleaded guilty to open murder, disinterment, and mutilation of a dead body on Thursday, September 22.

An attorney for Latunski told the Lansing State Journal that his client had to make a "tough decision to plead guilty."

According to the statement,  "The law requires that attorneys must follow the objectives of clients found to be legally competent as it relates to decisions, such as pleading guilty, even if the attorneys believe that it is not in the best interests of the client. We will continue to vigorously advocate for Mr. Latunski at the degree hearing and sentencing."

According to MLive.com, It's possible that Latunski's defense team planned to argue insanity in court.

The trial of Latunski was set to begin on October 18, according to WJBK-TV.

According to MLive.com, the victim, Kevin Bacon, was reported missing on Christmas Day 2019 when he failed to appear for breakfast with his parents. Many of his loved ones in Swartz Creek, Michigan, went looking for him.

WJBK states that Bacon's roommate revealed to police that Bacon had met a man through the Grindr dating app.

The body of Latunski, 25, was found on December 28, 2019, in his Shiawassee County residence, as reported by MLive.com. He was apparently found hanging from the ceiling by his feet, blood pouring from cuts all over his body.

According to MLive.com, Some of Bacon's body had been devoured and he had been stabbed in the back and his throat had been cut.

Latunski was held in a mental health facility and had many competence hearings while he was there.

According to WJBK, Latunski's lawyer asked for a competence hearing in January of 2020, stating in court, "He believes he’s named someone else. He believes he’s from a royal family out of Wales, the Thomas clan. And just the nature of the crime itself, you’ve got to send him for this evaluation."

According to MLive.com, he was found competent to face trial in October 2020; however, Latunski's legal team requested another review of his mental health in March 2022. A judge determined his competency in May of 2022.

462: Woman Brings Pet Racoon To Bar, Arrest Ensues | True Crime Daily Brief

2m · Published 04 Oct 15:00
A woman from North Dakota was arrested after she allegedly brought her pet raccoon into a nightclub.

A 38-year-old woman is facing criminal charges after she was allegedly caught bringing her pet "non-domesticated raccoon" to a club.

According to the Benson County Sheriff’s Office, Erin Christensen was brought into custody Sept. 14 on accusations of giving false information to law enforcement, tampering with evidence, and other North Dakota Game & Fish offences.

After "executing many search warrants in the Maddock area and identifying a non-domesticated raccoon," the Benson County Sheriff's Office and North Dakota Game & Fish apparently concluded their investigation into Christensen.

Christensen allegedly took her pet raccoon to a neighborhood watering hole. The Benson County Sheriff's Office reported that officials became concerned about a possible rabies exposure and "put down and transported to be tested for rabies and other diseases" the raccoon.

She posted $1,500 bond on September 21, according to court documents.

The Bismarck Tribune writes Christensen could face up to two years in jail and a cost of up to $7,500. As the story goes, she has a pet raccoon whom she calls Rocky.

Jesus Christensen issued a statement to the Bismarck Tribune saying, "Too much effort was put in to wrongfully imprison a harmless raccoon. They didn't seem to care if we were rabid or not. They were concerned about locating and killing Rocky, and then locking me up."

Christensen claimed inside the pub, "Rocky never left my arms."

According to reports, Christensen and her family found Rocky on the side of the road and were caring for him until he was healthy enough to be released back into the wild. According to reports, Rocky's rabies test came back negative.

According to the Bismarck Tribune, it is against the law in North Dakota to keep a raccoon from the wild as a pet.

Christensen told the Bismarck Tribune that her children were "devastated and inconsolable" after authorities took Rocky from them, and that the whole family had been "traumatized" by her arrest.

During the conversation, she remarked, "Simply put, he was hungry, lonely, and terrified. My family and he were together for three pleasant months. We regret he will never fully develop his raccoon personality."

462: Man Arrested On Suspicion of Kidnapping and Murder | True Crime Daily Brief

1m · Published 03 Oct 15:00
A man in his 45s was detained near Tucson on suspicion of kidnapping and murdering a man in his late twenties.

KSAZ-TV reports that John Cole abducted Antoine Smith on September 16 or 17 for financial reasons. According to a police release acquired by KSAZ, Smith's loved ones allegedly tried to get in touch with Cole to inquire about his well-being.

According to KOLD-TV, on the way from Phoenix to Tucson, Cole let Smith use the restroom in a remote area of Pima County. Reports indicate that during an interview, Cole stated that Smith attacked him before he was able to get hold of Smith and strangle him.

KOLD reports that Cole took Smith's body to his house in the 5900 block of East Third Street in Tucson, where he cleaned and dismembered it. Cole allegedly told police in Phoenix where they could find Smith's body, but he refused to give a DNA sample, according to KOLD.

Cole was arrested by the Arizona Department of Public Safety on September 20 while en route to California. Smith's skull and hands, among other body parts, were reportedly discovered in Cole's car.

Allegedly, Cole directed investigators to a rural location outside Tucson where more human remains were uncovered.

According to booking documents at the Maricopa County Jail, Cole was arrested for murder, kidnapping, and theft.

Cole is allegedly facing charges of aggravated assault and aggravated harassment coming from an incident earlier this year, in addition to a federal prison sentence of more than 15 years he received in 2003 for possession of cocaine with intent to distribute.
