456: "Hoax Kidnapping Victim" Sheri Papini Sentenced to 18 Months | Breaking News

3m · Published 19 Sep 22:29
After her 2016 kidnapping hoax was discovered thanks to breakthroughs in DNA technology, Sherri Papini, a mother from California, was sentenced to a year and a half in jail on Monday, as reported by the Department of Justice.

After Papini, now 40 years old, agreed to the hoax and pleaded guilty to mail fraud and making false statements in April, Judge William B. Shubb sentenced her to 18 months in prison followed by 36 months of supervised release. Almost $311,000 in restitution was also added to her sentence.

The judge's punishment was significantly longer than what the defense had asked for. The prosecution requested a sentence of eight months in prison; the defense argued for one month in incarceration and seven months of home detention.

In a statement read aloud to the judge, Papini argued that: "I really regret the pain I've caused to so many. My family and friends, who gave so much for the damaged woman I once was. Those that helped me out when I really needed it and provided without expecting anything in return. It's very appreciated."

She admitted before the judge that she lied and had dishonored her family and was now willing to "repent and to concede."

The allegations stem from when Papini went missing in November 2016 when she went for a jog in Shasta County, which is located in Northern California. After being missing for three weeks, she was discovered hurt and alone on a highway some 140 miles distant. She informed police that two disguised Spanish-speaking women kidnapped her, confined her to a closet, threatened her with a gun, and branded her with a heated object before releasing her.

Authorities launched a thorough hunt for the alleged Hispanic kidnappers, but their efforts yielded no results after several years. Additionally, she was awarded almost $30,000 in victim compensation payments from the state.

Her story unraveled in 2020 when DNA evidence linked her clothes to an ex-boyfriend who later revealed that the kidnapping was a lie.

Federal prosecutors wrote in a sentencing letter that the fake was a waste of resources and led officers to pursue innocent people.

The petition states that prosecutors believe Papini "conceived and executed a complex kidnapping hoax, and then continued to perpetuate her false assertions for years after her return without concern for the harm she caused others." Because of this, "for over four years, state and federal investigators committed minimal resources to Papini's investigation," before discovering "that she was not kidnapped and tortured" on their own.

Prosecutors further said that "Papini forced innocent individuals to become targets of a criminal investigation." The public was left in a state of anxiety while her claimed Hispanic captors remained at large.

Papini's lawyer wrote in a sentencing memo that his client had acknowledged to the deception and that she felt her reputation had taken enough of a hit.

"Sherri's long period of denial has come to an end. Her name has become synonymous with this terrible fraud. You can't ignore it any longer, "In the filing, attorney William Portanova stated.

"It's impossible to conceive of a more harrowing public exposure of a person's damaged psyche. In its current form, the punishment is severe enough to feel like a permanent ban from society "Moreover, he said.

Portanova tried to differentiate the modern-day Papini from the perpetrator outside of court on Monday.

It's not the same Sherri Papini you met five years ago, he remarked; she's changed a lot.If you like TRUE CRIME TODAY - Be sure to search and subscribe wherever you download podcasts!

448: Q-Anon Supporter Kills Wife, Daughter... And The Dog | True Crime Daily Brief

2m · Published 19 Sep 15:00
After allegedly murdering his wife, shooting the family dog, and hurting his daughter, police shot a 53-year-old man who espoused QAnon conspiracy theories.

The Oakland County Sheriff's Office reports that a deputy was dispatched to Glenwood Drive after a young woman reported that her father had shot her. After responding to the call, officers from the Walled Lake Police Department arrived on the site and reported hearing a gunshot as they approached the residence.

The Sheriff's Department claimed that the defendant, identified as Igor Lanis, exited the residence firing a Remington 870 pump action shotgun at responding deputies. They allegedly fired back, killing him.

The Sheriff's Department conducted a more thorough search of the residence and located the 25-year-old woman who had dialed 911. Despite being sent to the hospital in severe condition, the woman is said to be doing well following surgery and is now categorized as stable.

During their investigation, police discovered the body of Lanis's 56-year-old wife, who had been shot numerous times in the back. According to the Sheriff's Office, she was allegedly shot and killed as she was leaving the house. A household dog was also discovered dead from gunshot wounds.

Rebecca Lanis, Lanis' daughter, informed The Detroit News that her mother Tina and sister Rachel were killed. She also revealed to the media source that her father, who had mental health concerns, had become increasingly immersed in various online conspiracy theories, including those of QAnon.

Rachel Lanis was shot in the back and legs, causing her to sustain "extremely severe injuries," according to reports.

And, as Rebecca Lanis put it, "right-wing extremism is not funny; people need to watch their relatives; and if they have guns, they need to conceal them or report them or anything because this is out of hand."

448: Man Has With Incoherent & Dying Woman, Jail Ensues | True Crime Podcast

3m · Published 18 Sep 15:00
A 48-year-old man has been charged with many counts of rape because it is believed that he had sexual contact with a "incoherent" woman multiple times before she passed away.

The unidentified 38-year-old female victim was a houseguest of suspects Jeremy Corlis, Mary Corlis, and Denice Carpenter, where she grew "extremely unwell" and "behaved strangely," as reported by the Izard County Sheriff's Office.

Over the course of 48 hours, the woman's condition reportedly deteriorated, and in the 24 hours before her death, she "was reportedly incoherent, unable to stand or walk on her own, and unable to articulate."

According to the statement, the victim's condition was "becoming worse" as Jeremy and Mary Corlis and Carpenter informed the Sheriff's Office they were "taking care" of her and letting her "relax" alone in a room.

Mary Corlis allegedly told Izard County police on August 29 that she saw Jeremy enter the victim's room the day before and that the victim was "laying on the floor." Jeremy allegedly lingered in the room for 20-30 minutes.

Mary reported hearing "noises," which she characterized as "sounding like someone was having wonderful sex."

In addition, she allegedly acknowledged that the woman was "incoherent at this time."

The female victim was identified by the Izard County Sheriff's Office as Victim 1 in a press statement.

On August 29, Jeremy was interviewed by detectives, and he allegedly admitted to them that he had sexual contact with the woman. They were apparently "fooling around" and he referred to his acts as "foreplay."

It has been stated that Jeremy told investigators that the sexual encounter took place at around 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. He thought Victim 1 was trying to talk before and throughout the assault, but the noises were inaudible, he said on August 28.

Further, he claimed he was unable to decipher the lady's words.

As of September 2nd, Jeremy allegedly admitted to the five counts of sexual assault against the victim. Jeremy "did not think Victim 1 realized what was taking place during the attacks," according to the Izard County Sheriff's Office.

She passed away on August 28, KAIT-TV reports.

The official cause of death has not yet been determined, although the Sheriff's Office has stated that "preliminary report finds no injuries to the corpse that suggests to foul play."

Jeremy faces five counts of rape and has been arrested in Izard County.

448: Police Find Mans Scalp In Bag, Wife Charged | True Crime Daily Brief

3m · Published 17 Sep 15:00
As her murder trial was about to begin last week, a 71-year-old lady pleaded no guilty to charges related to the death of her husband.

According to documents filed in the York County Court, Virginia Hayden pled "nolo contendre" to third-degree murder and tampering with public information, and she faces six to twenty years in prison.

After Thomas Hayden Sr. went missing and was presumed dead, Hayden was first charged with more than 60 crimes, including first-degree murder, forgery, and other offenses. She has been charged with 14 counts of wire fraud for allegedly diverting over $113,000 in Social Security benefits from the account of her late spouse.

York Daily Record reports that on January 18, 2012, a walker on Conewago Road found a plastic FoodSaver bag containing "blood-stained goods, skin, and hair." The bag was sent to a DNA lab, where it remained unmatched until 2017, when Thomas' siblings submitted their own DNA samples.

The bag, according to the York Dispatch, held a scalp with the hair pulled back into a ponytail and a bloody sheet.

In 2017, Thomas Hayden's estranged daughter Kim Via reportedly reported him missing to the York Daily Record. Police reportedly charged his stepdaughter, Connie Lynn Pender, with tampering with public records as they probed his disappearance.

A similar story was purportedly made to a Pennsylvania State Trooper by Thomas's wife, Virginia, who said that in 2011, Thomas "had left Pennsylvania one night to seek medical treatment for ALS and never returned." Then she allegedly gave inconsistent accounts of why her spouse had supposedly left.

As the detectives dug more into Thomas and Virginia's lives, they discovered that Thomas had never received an ALS diagnosis. It has also been said that Virginia stated, "Because to me, he is," when asked why she said her husband had died.

A forensic pathologist testified at an earlier hearing, as reported by the York Daily Record, that Thomas was probably shot to death and that someone used a material to disintegrate his body.

Thomas's body, however, has yet to be located.

448: 6 Month Manhunt Ends | True Crime Podcast

3m · Published 16 Sep 15:00
Months after he was on the run, the 34-year-old suspect in the maltreatment, sexual assault, and murder of an 8-year-old girl earlier this year was apprehended.

Dhante Jackson was arrested on suspicion of murder and child abuse on September 10 in Newark, California. He was apprehended by officers from the Merced Police Department, the Merced Area Gang and Narcotics Enforcement Team, and the Department of Justice's Special Operations Unit.

The Merced Police Department also reported that, after six months of looking for him, they had finally located and arrested Jackson. The police say they detained many people who "aided Jackson while he was on the run by providing him shelter and financial support."

Sophia's loved ones filed a missing person report with the Hayward Police on March 8; they said they hadn't seen her since December 2021. Sophia, a "at-risk missing juvenile," was reported missing on March 11 and a search was launched.

Samantha Johnson, Jackson's alleged girlfriend, was arrested on child abuse charges and taken into jail at the Santa Rita Jail, where detectives reportedly met with both Sophia's mother and Johnson. Reports state that Johnson directed police to the Barclay Way home where they discovered Sophia's body. After Johnson's arrest, he was sent to the Merced County Jail on murder charges.

The California Attorney General's Office said in a press release after Jackson's arrest that Sophia had been "forced to live in a shed" and had been subjected to sexual and physical abuse.

Police discovered Sophia's body about a month after she had died, and an examination revealed she had suffered from malnutrition. The method of her death was reportedly ruled to be homicide by the coroner.

Lt. Joe Perez of the Merced Police Department told reporters, "In my 20 years in law enforcement, this case is the most frightening and awful I've encountered."

Police reportedly discovered the girl's rotting body in the tub. Social workers in Alameda County say that Sophia stated her mother had assaulted her twice, including by choking and burning her.
