A lot of young men come from backgrounds that are far from ideal, and their struggles play a major role in the development of their self-worth and identity. Some choose to stay within the confines of their situation and build their life and identity around it while others look to grow. The only difference between these two groups of men is a single choice, the choice to try and learn how to be better. In this episode of Himprovement, I spoke with Jeff AD Martin, an award-winning public speaker, author, and entrepreneur who has inspired many young people to be the best version of themselves by sharing his own story of making that one crucial choice that completely changed the trajectory of his life. Part of making that choice was sparing the life of his cousin's killer. Watch to learn more.

When life doesn't go as expected, it can lead to us experiencing a range of negative states and emotions. The two that are the biggest threats to men are anger and depression. Anger has pushed many men to make dire mistakes that ruined their lives and hurt others, and depression combined with the lack of training to unpack and communicate emotions has led to men committing suicide at a rate 3.5 times higher than women. Lesleigh Tolin, a grief recovery specialist and the guest in this week's episode of Himprovement, explains how most negativity that we go through mentally, like the examples given, falls under the umbrella of grief. With that being said, it's in our best interest to make sure that we deal with our grief in productive ways. Watch to learn about Lesleigh's grief recovery method.

Having the education/training for a position is only the first checkbox when it comes to qualifying for a role. Something that many people miss are the social elements, people skills and manners. In a society where so many people have never been taught how to deal with others, Donald James offers insights to help through his book, Manners Will Take You Where Brains and Money Won't. The lessons in this book are what he attributes his 35 years of success at NASA to. Listen to learn more.

Hurt people hurt other people. Anyone can decide to be resentful and unforgiving to the people who harmed them, but how many can forgive? In order to forgive, you have to see the culprit through a different set of eyes, no longer through the perspective of a victim but instead that of an empathizer. Ask yourself what it is about their past that led them to move through life the way that they do. Most people aren’t born malevolent. My theory is that the people among us who harm others took on their antisocial tendencies as a defense mechanism against threats, physical or psychological, in their given environment to deal with their own pain. Those that are aware of the damage they do probably see it as a necessity due to the cynical outlook on life that their experiences and the influence of the people around have helped shape. In this episode of Himprovement, Scott Carson, one of the hosts of the Campfire Project and the co-founder of the Business of Smiles, shares a similar take on this and even tells his own story of how he came to this realization when reconciling with his father.

It seems as though we have robbed ourselves of the freedom to be authentically human. How many of us hide our emotions from the people we care about or pretend to be somebody that we're not when we're in the public eye? So many of us place unrealistic standards on ourselves when it comes to our masculinity, and we use our egos as a shield to protect ourselves from the potential realization that we don't measure up. In this episode of Himprovement, I talked to Alan Stevens, an international profiling and communications specialist as well as the creator & host of the #WeTogether initiative & The Campfire Project. We talked about the burden that many men take on of dealing with their struggles alone as well as how our desire to be perceived as "THE man" limits our growth.
