Episode 126 - Preparing for Life Before & After Combat

In Episode 126, we welcome Shane K. to discuss the recent invasion and war in Ukraine, and how both military personnel and civilians have been impacted by the need to serve their country in an intense environment of combat. Shane provides his own thoughts on the reasons for war and the circumstances that Ukrainian citizens have had to deal with over the past month of invasion and bombardment. He also discusses his own induction and career in the military and Navy Seals, and how it impacted him both personally and professionally. Now that he is back in the civilian world, Shane provides us with the new challenges and goals he faces as a medical practitioner who has been heavily influenced and motivated by his previous involvement in the military.

Shane K. is a medical student at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Shane found his calling to become a physician as a combat medic while forward deployed to Afghanistan, working in a forward surgical team and helping save patients on the battlefield. Shane completed his BS in Health Science magna cum laude from Campbell University in 2019, is involved in various leadership positions as a medical student, and is passionate about helping highly-qualified veterans transition into the medical field. Shane is intimately familiar with the medical school application process and has helped numerous veterans successfully matriculate and transition into medical school.

When you find yourself watching images of wartime conditions and citizens being displaced by battle, it makes you wonder if you are both physically and mentally fit to survive and thrive in those types of circumstances. We discuss an approach to fitness that challenges individuals well beyond the need to improve body composition, basic strength and aerobic conditioning. Does it make you ask questions about whether or not you are training hard enough to prepare yourself for worst-case scenario circumstances? Hopefully, none of us will have to prepare for wartime conditions. But it does make you think about preparing for the future in a more pragmatic and comprehensive manner, as we never know what’s around the corner in these times.

With the recent losses incurred by on-demand connected fitness company, Peloton, fitness industry leaders are trying to determine the best ways to position themselves as we move forward out of the pandemic. Will brick and mortar, in-person fitness businesses bring back members to pre-pandemic levels or will digital fitness platforms retain a large proportion of users and continue to grow? Or will the best approach be to find a happy medium between providing both in-person and digital fitness services to stay resilient should a new pandemic or challenge appear. Randy outlines all of the various business models around health, fitness and wellness, and identifies some of the bigger players in fitness and technology, and how they could influence the future.

Randy Kane is an entrepreneur turned investor with over 25 years of experience building, managing, and investing in leading-growth companies. At Profec Partners, Randy identifies unique businesses with potential for scale and provides growth capital to early-stage companies from their inception through traditional venture capital investments. Most recently, Randy served as the COO and Advisor to the CEO and founder of DanceBody, a dance-inspired fitness company, helping to build and grow the company from inception. He furthered the company’s growth on a global scale by launching DanceBody@Home in early 2016 — an innovative, proprietary digital platform — featuring both OnDemand and Live streaming options. Randy continued to advise and guide the expansion of the business through mid-2019 with two studios in NYC, the first in NoMad and the second in TriBeCa shortly thereafter.

Episode 122 - Shani Davis: The 2022 Winter Olympic Warm-Up

Episode 122 is our 2022 Winter Olympic warm-up session with the help of legendary speed skating sensation, Shani Davis. Known for his domination of the 1000m and 1500m events in long track speed skating for over a decade, Shani updates us on his work as a coach and mentor to many up and coming speed skating athletes. He outlines his career in speed skating, staring at a young age with roller skating and inline skating. He quickly moved up the ranks to the elite levels in both short-track and long-track speed skating. Shani talks about what it takes to prepare for and compete at the Olympic level and also hints at what he expects to see in the sport at the 2022 Olympics in Beijing, China.

Shani Davis is a multi-gold and silver medallist at the Winter Olympics, capturing gold in the 1000m event at the 2006 and 2010 Olympic Games, while also winning the silver medal in the 1500m event at both Olympics. He was the first African-American athlete to win a gold medal at an individual event at the Winter Olympic Games. Davis has also won the World Allround Speed Skating Championships in 2005 and 2006, as well as capturing the World Sprint Championships in 2009, becoming the second male skater to win both the Sprint and Allround titles behind Eric Heiden. He also has multiple single event World Championship titles as well as having set a total of nine world records throughout his career. Although Davis grew up in Chicago, Illinois, he spends most of his time in Salt Lake City, Utah training and mentoring future Olympians and World Champions.

Episode 121 is a great conversation with wife and husband team, Doctors Jen and Dom Fraboni, about creating an agile career, as well as a flexible and healthy body in 2022. Jen and Dom both work as physical therapists with both in-person and online clients, while also maintaining a strong presence as social media influencers and podcasters. We discuss basic guidelines around improving mobility and managing chronic pain, as many people are struggling with the stress and anxiety of being stuck at home and are in great need of simple strategies to stay healthy and fit.

Dr. Jen Fraboni is a top-40 physical therapy influencer. With a Doctorate in physical therapy, she is ranked as one of the Best Fitness Trainers on IG by Shape Magazine and has been featured in Self Magazine, Men’s Fitness, Muscle and Fitness as well as well as a select interview guest on CBS and on the RISE podcast with Mogul CEO Rachel Hollis.

Dr. Domenic Fraboni is a Doctor of Physical Therapy and Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach. He earned this after graduating from Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences in Rochester, MN IN 2018. He is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), attending many events nationwide to advocate for the advance of the physical therapy profession as well as accessibility to higher quality of care.

Episode 120 - Frank "Tank" Frazier: Making Bail with Bounty Tank

Episode 120 gets serious with Don and Derek sitting down with Frank “Tank” Frasier, also affectionately known as Bounty Tank. Frank walks us through a typical day in the bail bonds business and outlines the types of characters he gets to deal with on a regular basis. He also discusses his approach to fitness and bodybuilding, and how his routine has evolved over the years to adapt to not only his career demands, but also getting older. Frank has a wildly successful YouTube channel called Bounty Tank. The channel has just under 500,000 subscribers and has the potential to develop into a series for a larger audience via one of the top streaming services. In many ways, Frank is a combination of law enforcement officer, athlete and entertainer, all the while having fun and welcoming new adventures.

Frank “Tank” Frasier is an Ohio based bail bondsman who has trained for and competed in bodybuilding. When Frank was in college at Hampton University in Virginia, he played at the linebacker position in football and majored in nursing. Initially starting as a police officer, Bounty Tank eventually began his career as a bounty hunter and bail bondsman and has never looked back. He has taken advantage of his prowess in physical fitness and strength training to help propel his career to new heights. But he has also used his intelligence, experience and personality to effectively manage risk in a profession that is inherently dangerous. Frank is also an emerging artist, rapper and songwriter.
