024: Joyful Movement with Barb Puzanovova, aka The Non-Diet Trainer

1h 11m · Published 28 Jun 02:00

TW: Eating Disorders

Barb Puzanovova, aka The Non-Diet Trainer (@nondiet_trainer) is a Health at Every Size, weight-neutral, and inclusive ACE-certified Group Fitness Instructor, Personal Trainer, Behavior Change Specialist, and Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor. Due to her own story of recovering from an eating disorder, she empowers people to step off the scale and into their life so they can move their body with less rules and more joy.

Barb and I kick off the episode by talking about common perceptions or ideas of what it means to be a trainer - we talk about how often people think trainers have to look a certain way to do their jobs and that leads us into talking about how Barb's work has changed since the pandemic.

Barb shares how her definition of healthy and fit has changed over the years and in this she shares how dance and other forms of movement helped her learn to regulate and cope with her emotions, which is super cool.

We talk a little bit about identity, specifically, identifying with a form of movement or as an athlete or exerciser and how some of the expectations we often hold with being or doing that thing can impact us if our ability to be or do that thing is at stake for example if we get injured or are sick or something. Barb also shares also how identifying so strongly with exercise might lead into disordered habits or eating disorders like Barb experienced.

We also chat about red flags and green flags when it comes to finding a non-diet or HAES trainer, the important of creating agency and autonomy with clients, and Joyful movement - what it is and what are some steps you can take to move from conventional ideas of exercise to joyful movement.

023: Finding Body Appreciation with Laura Voshell

53m · Published 14 Jun 00:00

Laura is a 35 year old feminist, nurse, mom of two boys ages 10 and 5 and a spouse to a dental student at the college of dentistry. She has survived two babies with colic and post-partum depression and all the boys in her house have ADHD which is another daily struggle she deals with. Laura has had a mixed relationship with her body since she was pretty young and is a previous disordered eater. She was on the University of Iowa Women’s rowing team for a short while, which you’ll hear helped with some of her restrictive eating patterns at the time. Laura is currently at the heaviest weight she has ever been and says that she is, “doing daily work to appreciate all the things this body has done instead of focusing on what I wish it looked like.”

In this episode Laura and I dive into a variety of topics. We talk about her work in healthcare and how she has witnessed folks in larger bodies not receiving proper care due to their size. Laura details her experience with disordered eating and how her relationship with food and movement has changed overtime, sharing how it started after a break up and has morphed and shapeshifted over the years. We do discuss specific calorie counts and restrictive behaviors that may be triggering for folks who are struggling with their relationship with food. We chat about the role control has played in both of our choices with food and movement and the importance of grooming your social media. We also talk a little bit about food marketing and labeling after we both listened to episode 315 of the Armchair Expert Podcast with Dax Shephard and we thought it was really interesting so we wanted to talk about it. Laura talks parenting and body changes, and so much more. A really cool episode with an amazing woman.

1. Recognize how you feel

2. Remind yourself that the scale does not tell the whole story of your health

3. Reflect on how you were feeling before stepping on the scale

4. Resist the urge to fall back to harm patterns of over-exercising and undereating.
