053: Men & Intuitive Eating with Jeff Ash

53m · Published 25 Jul 11:00
Jeff Ash is a husband of a chronic pain/illness warrior, father of 2 neurodivergent adult daughters, dog lover, nutritionist, Intuitive Eating Coach, Personal Trainer, and host of the Men's Intuition Podcast where he seeks to teach and encourage other men (and of course everyone else too) on their own Intuitive Eating journeys. His passion lies in helping individuals and families transform their relationships with food, exercise, and their bodies all without restriction, guilt, or shame. Join me this week as I sit down with Jeff to talk all things intuitive eating and men. Jeff shares how his approach to his masculinity is influenced being raised by a nurturing father who was in tune with his emotions and how his current weight neutral approach to health and fitness was influenced by both his wife's journey with chronic pain and illness and Ellen Satter's DOR.  Jeff discusses the ways that disordered eating/unhealthy relationships with food present for men and how society's idea of what it means to be a man prevents men from seeking support.  Jeff also talk about the importance of fathers and all parents having open conversations with their kids and being aware of signs of disordered eating or unhealthy relationship with food, body, etc. And then he provides some recommendations for how to approach this topic with men and advocate for support, emphasizing being strategic, especially for women.  Learn more from and connect with Jeff: IG: @intuitive.eating.men Web: HopeDrivesMe.com TikTok: @intutive.eating.men (but I have yet to do anything there quite yet ... maybe some day) =================================== If you'd like to contact me to work together, provide feedback on the podcast, ask clarifying questions, provide a suggestion for a guest or future episode, or for any other reason you can find me at: IG: @giveemthebirdpodcast & @haley_gtbcoaching Web: gtbcoaching.com --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/giveemthebirdpodcast/support

049: Intuitive Eating & IFS with Dr. Kim Daniels

1h 1m · Published 13 Jun 11:00

Join me this week as I talk with Dr. Kim Daniels all about Internal Family Systems (IFS) and intuitive eating.

Dr. Kim Daniels is an Emotional Eating coach with a degree in Clinical Psychology who's been working with clients who struggle with eating disorders and disordered eating for over 20 years.  She's also a Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor and is the host of the Emotional Eating and Everything Else Podcast.  Dr. Daniels combines Internal Family Systems and Intuitive Eating approaches to help her clients exit diet culture, make peace with food, and respect their bodies.

Dr. Daniels tells us how her practice and personal views on health, weight, nutrition, and diet culture have changed over the years. She explains in detail what Internal Family Systems psychotherapy is, how she uses it to help women “curb” (not “cure”) emotional eating, and how IFS and intuitive eating work so well together.

You can learn more from Dr. Daniels at https://www.yourweightisnotyourworth.com/ and listen to her podcast, Emotional Eating and Everything Else at https://www.yourweightisnotyourworth.com/podcast-1.

048: One Year, One Fear with Cara Flynn

57m · Published 06 Jun 14:09

Join me this week as I interview a powerhouse of a woman, Cara Flynn. We talk facing fear, ditching perfectionism, getting real, and going beyond.

Cara's bio:

Born in the seventies, LATE seventies mind you, a child of the 80’s, a flannel wearing, cigarette smoking, Reality Bites loving, pretend adult of the 90’s, followed up by the most unexpected experiences as a young wife, mother, divorcee, surprise stay at home mom, new wife of an entrepreneur,  wreck of a woman that feared it all finding my way in to mid-life not with a crisis but with a passion…who loves a run on sentence, ME.

I currently am the owner of a small and challenged but amazing yoga studio in downtown Iowa City called Benders Studio.  It sits smack dab in the center of the land of the forever young, The University of Iowa. Although I struggle to find success financially, this studio has provided a space for people to learn about themselves and to find out that they are so much more than what their reflection tells them….

Thank goodness my partner in crime does not struggle with success as he is an entrepreneur following some big dreams in the area through creating amazing spaces for people to drink, eat, and gather! Brian Flynn reminds me daily to be brave and dig deep!

I am a mom to three amazing kiddos that make my head spin and heart explode daily.  Like my other roles in life, I’m definitely not going to win awards, but I hit the jackpot and love this mom gig a lot, especially now that they aren’t babies and can put on their own socks!

In 2020 I decided to embark on a project of the heart.  The goal was to bring women together so that we could witness the power in each of us and to remove the barriers that we put up and hold us back from our dreams.  Beyond Barriers has turned into so much more than I could ever imagine and I love that I get to be on this ride with women that inspire me daily!!

I am you… I am the woman that sometimes hates her body, questions her life choices, loves every decision she has made, is damn proud of the body she inhabits, and maybe tomorrow might open up a bakery.. just kidding I can’t bake for shit!

I change my mind, I change my direction, but I always come back to me…. grateful to be on the journey and ready to start a new one!

Want to find me??  Check out bendersstudio.com, Benders Studio on Facebook or Instagram, Beyond Barriers Iowa on Facebook or Instagram, or just email me at [email protected]!

047: The Gray Area with Maria Sylvester Terry, MS, RD, LDN

1h 2m · Published 30 May 11:00

Maria Sylvester Terry, MS, RDN, LDN is a registered dietitian working in private practice in New Orleans. Her mission is to provide nutritional guidance from a lens of self-care and to help clients go from confused to confident with food choices. Working with Maria means cultivating a positive relationship with food, learning how to fuel your body consistently, and approaching nutrition without restrictive food rules. As a former teacher, Maria strives to deliver educational and encouraging content on social media to break through the cacophonous noise of diet culture.

In the episode Maria shares her journey from teacher to dietitian which was neither "glorious" nor classic, but fueled by poor mental health.

She tells how her definition of what it means to be healthy and fit growing up was dictated by fatphobia and a weight centric pediatrician.

We talk all about what her nuanced gray area approach to nutrition looks like for her clients and discuss some of the frustration with anti-diet culture that we've both been hearing from clients and seeing ourselves.

We then round out the episode with Maria sharing how to approach goals and accountability from a non-diet lens using curiosity and flexibility rather than judgement.
