A Seat at the Table with Cindy Roat

UPDATE: As of May 1st, 2022, Ms. Roat's  term as Treasurer with NCIHC was fulfilled.

Today's episode of Brand the Interpreter brings us Cindy E. Roat,  a trainer of community interpreters, an international consultant on language access in health care, and certified as a medical and social-service English- Spanish interpreter. 

Over the past three decades, Ms. Roat has made significant contributions, both in the U.S. and abroad, in many areas of language access. She is the author of a wide array of key resources in the field and the primary developer of a number of basic courses for healthcare interpreters. Her most recent book, Healthcare Interpreting in Small Bites, is being adopted as an ancillary text in many training programs. 

Ms. Roat has also consulted for a variety of large medical centers and healthcare systems. Always concerned about building grassroots capacity, Ms. Roat has been a mentor to interpreters, trainers and Language Access Coordinators around the U.S. She is a founding member of the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC),  a founding member of the Washington State Coalition on Language Access (WASCLA), and a former board member of the Northwest Translators and Interpreters Society (NOTIS) where she built a statewide network for providing high quality, low cost continuing education for community interpreters. 

She is known nationally as an engaging speaker, a knowledgeable resource, and an energetic advocate for language access in general and today she joins us to share her story.

My Language Access Toolkit with Marifer Sager

Marifer Sager leads the Language Access Services Department at Portland Public Schools. She believes that language access/justice are key components to racial equity and that the strategic use of language can reshape the narratives of traditionally marginalized groups and ultimately transform systems. 

Her expertise includes the implementation of multilingual communications, outreach and engagement practices aimed at developing trust and fostering dialogue/cooperation among linguistically diverse communities and institutions. Marifer holds a law degree and a post-graduate certificate in Public Administration from Mexico. 

She is the recipient of the 2021 Language Access Visionary Award, a national recognition to outstanding dedication, profound work, and impact in the area of language access in a school district issued by the National Association of Educational Translators and Interpreters of Spoken Languages. Marifer is a 2022 EdWeek's Leader to Learn From in K-12 recognized for her Leadership in Equity & Inclusion, and Language Access.

Being the Voice with Yuliya Speroff

Yuliya Speroff  is a Russian-English CoreCHI™- and WA DSHS-certified medical and social services interpreter. In her current role of a supervisor at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Washington, Yuliya supports the work of a team of staff medical interpreters and manages translation projects. Yuliya was named 2021 Interpreter of The Year by the California Healthcare Interpreting Association.

Yuliya is certified as both an English and a Russian language instructor with more than 10 years of teaching experience. Yuliya's passion for teaching is realized through the work she does for a non-profit organization Americans Against Language Barriers, where she is engaged in curriculum development and training medical interpreters, as well as providing continuing education workshops for medical interpreters. Yuliya is the author of the Medical Interpreter Blog, which focuses on providing medical interpreters with resources and information for professional development.

Today's episode of Brand the Interpreter brings us Lourdes L Cerna, a Medical Spanish interpreter, Translator and Trainer with over 35 years of healthcare interpreting experience that includes interpreting in private and county hospitals and clinics, over-the-phone and VRI, interpreting in workers compensation cases, school districts, conference interpreting for several entities and organizations. Ms. Cerna has taught a medical interpreting curriculum at several colleges and currently teaches a 40-hour healthcare interpreting training curriculum. She also developed an award winning curriculum for Indigenous Interpreters for an organization in Ventura County that serves the Mixteco community. She has received the Distinction of Education award from the International Medical Interpreters Association and the Trainer of the Year award from CHIA and has served on CHIA's Board of Directors.  Ms. Cerna is a native of Guatemala.

Arabic in the World of Localization with Eman Abdo

Eman Abdo is an English to Arabic translator, and also speaks French, and is working to improve her Spanish and Italian, and she joins us all the way from  Egypt and specializes in localization and transcreation mainly in marketing and game localization. She studied translation at the Faculty of Al-Alsun and graduated in 2019, while working as a translator during her last year there. She is the author of Egypt Localization Guide and the force behind the localization of so many apps and games in Arabic and a gamer at core aspiring to change the way Arabic is represented globally.

At the age of 10 Eman was convinced she wanted to become a professional interpreter in spite of it not being considered a "fancy" profession. As fate would have it, however, Eman falls in love with the world of localization.

On this episode she join us to share her work as a translator and what it feels like to be the force behind the localization of so many apps and games in Arabic and a gamer at core aspiring to change the way Arabic is represented globally.
