#157 Jill Stanton on the Millionaire Mindset Shifts You Need to Build a 7-Figure Business You Love

1h 26m · Published 29 Jun 07:05
You are going to love this week’s episode! It’s an incredibly inspiring and empowering conversation with a badass entrepreneur I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know recently, Jill Stanton. I was familiar with Jill before we did this interview, but I really started getting to know her personally this year, both in 1-on-1 conversations we’ve had and in the virtual mixers she’s hosted. Not only does she know her shit, but I love her attitude and the other incredibly successful and cool women she attracts.

If you don’t know Jill,  she is one half of Screw The Nine To Five, a company that has inspired and empowered tens of thousands of new entrepreneurs to quit their jobs, start and grow thriving online businesses, and make over $100,000 a year, all while being location independent and living lives of meaning and purpose. When she’s not CEO-ing, Jill also loves travelling the world with her husband Josh and their young boy, Kai.

Jill is also the founder of the Millionaire Girls Club, which is a place to connect with unapologetically successful women who hype you up, inspire you to play a bigger game, and have way more fun doing it. She’s currently planning her first retreat, which we’re going to get into in this episode.

I know I say this about a lot of interviews, but this conversation really is one of my favorites to date. And I can’t think of anyone listening who won’t get something valuable out of it.

In Ep. 157, we cover:
  • Jill’s journey into the online space and the early years of her business
  • Affiliate marketing: How Jill was able to crush it as an affiliate marketer and what it takes to be successful at it
  • How she scrapped a very lucrative business model to do what truly feels aligned (and why that’s not a crazy thing to do!)
  • Developing the mindset required to become a millionaire and her favorite money mindset resources
  • Navigating failure and change, how motherhood has affected her business and lifestyle, and more!
Jill really drops so many gems in this episode. She also gives some great book recommendations, which you can find below.

Victoria’s Secret Rebranding, Rethinking Athlete Influence & Spotify’s Huge Moves: Unfiltered #2

1h 25m · Published 23 Jun 07:01

If you missed last week’s episode, it was the first episode of Beyond Influential Unfiltered, which is my more real-time twist on the traditional solo episode, where I get to give off-the-cuff commentary and hot takes on relevant news and topics related to influence, share behind the scenes of my business (and business in general!), and any recent trends you need to know about that I’m keeping an eye on!

Oh, and by the way, it's all on VIDEO! You can watch below or jump over to YouTube, where you can watch, like and subscribe!

Think of BI Unfiltered as solo episodes on steroids.

And don’t worry—you'll still be getting all of the Beyond Influential interviews you know and love, and there’s a great one coming out next week that I know will be really valuable for you.

If you listened to last week’s Unfiltered episode, it was more freeform to test and learn. This week’s episode is a little more structured and really hits on branding, business, and mental health in the context of some current trending topics including the Victoria’s Secret rebranding, rethinking obligations pro athletes have to sponsors and the events they participate in, some thoughts on moves Spotify is making in the audio space, including the Call Her Daddy’s Spotify deal, and more!

#156 Paco Underhill on the Psychology of Shopping and How to Use it to Get More Sales

1h 21m · Published 08 Jun 07:01

Have you ever read a book that’s just stuck with you over the years?

I have, and this week’s Beyond Influential guest is the author of one of those books! I first read Paco Underhill’s Why We Buy: The Science of Shopping when I was in high school, and it was one of my first introductions to marketing and the psychology behind it. And to this day, it’s still my go-to book recommendation whenever someone asks me for suggestions on how to learn about customer research.

This book has been in continuous print for over twenty years, has been published in 28 languages, and still sells over 100,000 copies per year... and for a good reason.

Paco Underhill created the field of retail anthropology and the science of shopping. He is the founder of Envirosell, a global retail consulting firm that has worked with the biggest companies you can name, including Microsoft, McDonald's, Adidas, and Estee Lauder, and across every kind of retail location you can think of—malls, department stores, supermarkets, airports, theme parks, and moreto study their customers' browsing and buying habits in order to learn the best way to lead them to make purchases.

He’s also the author of Call of the Mall: The Geography of Shopping and What Women Want: The Science of Female Shopping, an international keynote speaker, and a regular contributor to The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times.

I was really honored to be able to have this conversation with Paco because of the depth and breadth of his knowledge. His work has really been before its time and he continues to innovate and bring fresh ideas to the biggest businesses in the world.

On Ep. 156, we cover:

  • How Paco created the science of shopping and the study of the consumer
  • His secret to growing his business and winning clients at the Fortune 50 level
  • How the digital world is having an impact on how we shop and why small businesses are uniquely positioned to be successful
  • Why the US is actually behind other countries when it comes to the retail experience
  • How women are critical to the retail economy and why it’s necessary for businesses to cater to them specifically
  • The tipping point when businesses make a change that the rest of the industry follows, and more!

#155 The Perfect Pitch: Hollywood Insider Tips on How to Network with the A-List & Land Your Dream Guests with Christopher McDonald (Part 2)

1h 5m · Published 11 May 07:01

This week is Part 2 of an incredibly actionable conversation with Christopher McDonald, a Talent Booker who has worked with everyone from high-profile billionaires to celebrities and has booked an array of top talent from the world of entertainment, sports, business, science, tech, and politics. If you haven’t listened to Part 1 yet, you should definitely check it out.

Christopher has booked, produced and written for an array of programming including late-night television, cable news, web series and comedy sketch shows, and has been there since Day 1 booking talent for Tom Bilyeu’s Impact Theory, which is where he and I met when I was working with Tom as a client at VaynerTalent.

In last week’s part 1 of the conversation, we talked about his background working in Hollywood—expectations vs. reality, how he booked the biggest entertainment industry names, and how it really works behind the scenes. He also gave valuable tips and insights on networking, including the biggest mistake people make, as well as strategies for booking your show and landing dream guests. We also got a behind-the-scenes look at the launch and growth strategies of Impact Theory.

This week, in Part 2, we talk about all things pitching, and Christopher even shares the invaluable advice he got directly from Oprah herself on what standard she uses to book her own guests. This episode is definitely one you’ll want to take notes on!

On Ep. 155, we cover:

  • The A-to-Z of effective pitching: What to include, how long it should be, the tone you should take, and more
  • Tips for effectively getting your foot in the door (but not literally!)
  • Your one-sheet: What it is, why you need one, and what to include
  • The big no-nos to avoid: What will get your pitch rejected immediately
  • The one critical step you can’t skip in the pitching process
  • Factors you need to consider when booking your show
  • Handling rejection and why you shouldn’t take it personally, when to shoot your shot to book major guests, and more!

#154 The Perfect Pitch: Hollywood Insider Tips on How to Network with the A-List & Land Your Dream Guests with Christopher McDonald (Part 1)

1h 16m · Published 04 May 16:13

I am very excited about this week’s and next week’s episodes because this is an incredibly valuable and actionable two-parter with a guest who is world-class at what he does and these are skill sets you’re going to need no matter what you do in life.

As I’ve been growing this show and looking to take Beyond Influential to the next level, I’ve been thinking a lot about the people I know in my network who are master networkers—they build long-lasting relationships with people at all levels in a way that is not purely transactional, and they do it in a way that feels very real and authentic.

I met this week’s guest, Christopher McDonald, when I was working with Tom Bilyeu as my client at VaynerTalent; he’s been an integral part of Tom’s brand and the launch and strategy of both Inside Quest and Impact Theory, which we get into in this Part 1.

Christopher is a Talent Booker with almost two decades of experience and an extensive network of connections and relationships.  He has worked with everyone from high profile billionaires to celebrities and has booked an array of top talent from the world of entertainment, sports, business, science, tech, and politics.

And for what Christopher does as a talent booker, you need to have very strong relationships but also a very strong creative and strategic eye.

Christopher has booked, produced, and written for an array of programming including late-night television, cable news, web series, and comedy sketch shows. Christopher helped launch The Kelly Clarkson Show (NBC), Tavis Smiley (PBS), the second coming of The Arsenio Hall Show (CBS/Tribune), It’s Not You, It’s Men with Tyrese & Rev Run (OWN), Post Malone's Worldwide Celebrity Pong League (Facebook Watch), and Demi Lovato’s project (Quibi), and he has been with Tom Bilyeu’s Impact Theory from the very beginning.

Normally no one likes a name-dropper, but I specifically told Christopher to please namedrop in this conversation because he’s worked with people like Prince, Tom Cruise, Will Smith, Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy, Angelina Jolie, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Dave Matthews, Joni Mitchell, Alicia Keys, John Legend... you get the picture.

I love to introduce you to the people you should know on Beyond Influential, because while the public usually pays attention to the “face” of the brand, there are always talented people behind these people that make it all possible.

On Part 1 of this conversation, we cover a lot of juicy topics:

  • Christopher’s career evolution: From journalism to music booking to launching Impact Theory
  • Working in Hollywood: Expectations vs. reality
  • How he booked the biggest talent in Hollywood: What he loved, his approach, and the not-so-glamorous moments
  • All things networking: Tips, insights, and the biggest mistake people make
  • The launch of Impact Theory & its current growth strategies
  • How to book your show & strategies for landing dreams guests
  • Why you want “lightning in a jar” moments in your interviews, how to take your show to the next level, & more!

And you are not going to want to miss Part 2 next week which is all about the ins and outs of pitching, advice he received from Oprah herself about booking, and more! These are both bookmark episodes for sure!

#153 The Path of Least Resistance: How to Make Personal Branding Easy

57m · Published 20 Apr 07:01

If you didn’t already know, before I started my own business, I spent a few years working on Gary Vaynerchuk’s team, specifically, on his personal brand, Team Garyvee. Working with Gary on his brand was such an educational and life-changing experience, and that opportunity started my passion for personal branding (and I’ve been living and breathing it ever since!).

This week’s episode was an exciting one for me. I had the honor of being interviewed as a guest on The Sasha Group’s new podcast, Building While Flying, where they focus on tackling uncertain times by adopting an uncertainty mindset—we can't predict the future, but we can listen, learn, apply and share as we all navigate complex times together. If you aren’t familiar with the Sasha Group, it’s part of the Vayner X umbrella of companies that services small and mid-sized businesses through a variety of marketing offerings.

It was exciting to be able to reconnect and collaborate with the Vayner family, and this interview brings things full circle. Naturally, we chatted about all things personal branding. Whether you’re new to personal branding or not, this episode is full of valuable gems and takeaways!

On Ep. 153, we cover:

  • My passion for personal branding: How I discovered it and developed my own brand
  • Why you should be developing your personal brand, especially if you are an entrepreneur
  • The path of least resistance: How to approach your content strategy
  • Niching down: Why it’s critical to know exactly who you are talking to
  • Checks and balances: Why you need trusted people around you who will tell you “no”
  • What it actually means to be authentic and why it matters
  • Quickfire personal branding Q&A, what I’m up to next, and more!

#152 Clubhouse 101: The Basics, Best Practices & Tips You Need to Know with Brian Fanzo and Scott Martin

1h 48m · Published 13 Apr 07:01

Want to know more about the most buzzed-about social media platform right now?

If you haven’t heard of Clubhouse, the drop-in audio app is arguably the hottest platform at the moment. It’s currently invite-only and iOS-only, but they are working on the Android version and plan on opening it up to everyone in the near future. Clubhouse has been growing rapidly and is quickly gaining the attention of a who’s-who of entrepreneurs, celebrities, investors, athletes, you name it.

The founders are really paying attention to the user experience and have been offering a lot of transparency in the development and plans for the platform, including frequent town halls where they update users on what’s new, what they’re working on and more.

Social apps change a lot, and if you’re interested in how social media platforms grow and evolve (and listen to their user base!), this is a great case study to keep your eye on!

As of the time of recording this episode, Clubhouse is rolling out Payments, their first monetization feature for creators on the platform, which is currently in Beta. I find this particularly interesting because 100% of the payment will go to the creator with Clubhouse taking no cut at all, and they say this will be the first of many features that will allow creators to get paid directly on Clubhouse. The co-founders have been very vocal about building a platform that puts creators first and are aligning their business model to help creators make money and thrive on the platform.

Clubhouse also plans to make several changes to increase personalization of the app, including tweaking the Activity feed, more control over push notifications, a personalized list of suggested rooms that appear on-screen when you first open the app, and more.

This week’s Beyond Influential has been highly requested and is dedicated to talking basics, best practices, and what you need to know about this platform.

I’m excited to share this episode with you, where I have a candid conversation with two of my favorite Clubhouse creators and collaborators, Brian Fanzo and Scott Martin. They’ll introduce themselves in the episode, but you might remember Brian from Beyond Influential Ep. 47 and Ep. 48 on How to Build an Authentic Community That Gets Business Results, and if you listened to Ep. 125 on The Best Advice on How to Build an Influential Personal Brand Online, you might remember Scott from the clip taken from my interview on his Groundswell Marketing Podcast on Why Intentionality and Clarity are Essential to Personal Brand Marketing. Scott and I had the pleasure of meeting and hitting it off after his wife, Jill, who is one of my incredible LinkedIn Laws students and success stories (she 4x’d her monthly take home in the first month of implementing the course!), had told him about me.

While I’ve known both Brian and Scott for a while now, I can really credit Clubhouse with bringing us closer and allowing us the perfect opportunity to collaborate, which really is part of the appeal of the platform.  We host a weekly Clubhouse room on Tuesdays in Scott’s Sustainable Growth Marketing club, where we talk about personal branding related topics and do Q&A.

I love collaborating with Brian and Scott because we all align on the importance of integrity, and it really translated into an honest and candid conversation.

On Ep. 152, we talk all things CLUBHOUSE!

  • How to build a valuable network and strong relationships on the platform
  • The good, the bad and the ugly: what we love and what needs improvement
  • Moderation tips: How to create a positive experience, keep people on topic, and provide value to everyone in the room
  • The basics and best practices for using the app
  • How to be an ally and amplify underrepresented voices
  • Analytics tools, monetization, the future of the app, and more!

#151 Facing My Biggest Fear: What is Emetophobia & How to Overcome It with Anna Christie

1h 4m · Published 30 Mar 16:30

This week’s episode of Beyond Influential is a vulnerable one for me because I’m opening up about something I’ve never shared publicly before. It’s my biggest fear, and it’s probably not something you’ve heard of.

I have emetophobia, which is the fear of vomiting. And I want to be fully transparent about this—this week’s Beyond Influential interview was not easy for me to do. Just having this conversation around emetophobia was anxiety-inducing and though you might not be able to hear it because I’ve learned to hide my anxiety, the first half of the interview I really felt physically unwell until we moved away from emetophobia into talking more specifically about my guest’s business.

Emetophobia is very misunderstood and not widely diagnosed even though it is a fairly prevalent anxiety disorder that’s closely related to OCD (more so than other phobias or types of anxiety). Even today, there isn’t a ton of information about it online.

And while it’s estimated that 1.7-3.1% of males and 6-7% of females experience emetophobia, I think the numbers are actually higher than that—because of both a lack of awareness and the fact that it’s commonly misdiagnosed as other issues.

Emetophobia varies enormously in how it affects people, as well as how debilitating it is to live with it. When it comes to my own experience with emetophobia, I live with this and think about it every day, but unless I tell you about it, you wouldn’t know because I still go about my daily activities, travel, etc. However, for some people it’s much worse, to the point that they won’t even leave their homes or they’ll very severely restrict their eating.

And while my closest family and friends know this is a fear of mine, even they don’t understand the depth of that fear, how it affects me day-to-day, and the steps I take to avoid getting sick that they wouldn’t notice and I wouldn’t mention. At this point, I don’t even consciously realize I’m doing some of them because they’ve become so ingrained.

You may be wondering why I’m sharing all of this with you. There are a few reasons:

  1. Everyone deals with things you don’t realize, and it’s important to acknowledge that everyone’s fighting battles you don’t know anything about. And though I haven’t discussed this publicly before, I’m not hiding it—it just doesn’t come up in casual conversation and there’s usually no reason for me to bring it up. But I’ve decided it’s time for that to change and to have a candid conversation around it.

  2. It’s important to understand the difference between fear and an actual phobia. Phobias interfere with your day-to-day life in a way you can’t control and can actually cause physical or psychological impairment.

And that’s hard to convey to people. My best friend, who’s known me for decades, knows I don’t like throwing up. But she had no idea until a couple weeks ago when I brought it up that it was more than a simple fear, and that it’s actually a true phobia that negatively impacts my life every day.

  3. Awareness and destigmatization. I know this phobia might sound very weird or even ridiculous to some, but it’s very real. I know a fear of throwing up is not logical. I know it’s a natural bodily response, and that people don’t actually enjoy throwing up, but that makes no difference to someone who suffers from this phobia.

And if this episode helps one person who’s also struggling with emetophobia—whether they have a name for it or not—it would be worth it because I know how debilitating it can be, and how hopeless it is to feel like no one around you understands what you’re going through.

With that being said, I’m excited to introduce this week’s guest, Anna Christie, who is a psychotherapist and counsellor who specializes in treating emetophobia (and is a recovered emetophobe herself). Her free website of resources for therapists gets hundreds of thousands of views per month, and she has a popular weekly podcast, “Emetophobia Help with Anna Christie.”

Aside from her counselling credentials, Anna also holds a B.A in World Religion and Creative English, a Master of Divinity degree and an MBA. She was a United Church minister who changed careers in 2010 after thirty years in the pulpit—and fun fact, she also recently took up  competitive curling after a 30 year hiatus!

On Ep. 151, we cover:

  • Emetophobia: What it is and how it can be treated
  • Anna’s experience with emetophobia, as well as her recovery and journey to help others
  • What you should and shouldn’t say to someone with emetophobia
  • Her business: How she created this niche and became the go-to for emetophobia
  • How she’s used SEO, social media and podcasting effectively to build her brand and position her business for maximum impact, how she has no plans to let age stop her, and more!

While this episode is really more about emetophobia generally and Anna’s business, if you’re curious about my experience with emetophobia specifically and how I’m currently working on it, I am happy to give more details in a follow up episode if you’re interested. Send an email to [email protected] and let me know what questions you have because these conversations need to be happening!
