Marketing For Introverts

by MonkeyPants Productions

Marketing for Introverts is the podcast that explores ways introverts can successfully promote themselves and their businesses in a world where everyone else is shouting. Do you have that daily challenge between not wanting to put yourself out there but also needing to promote your business in order to make sales? Marketing advice for business owners centres on personal visibility, making an impact, raising your profile. How does that fit if you are reserved and quiet, and you prefer to listen and reflect? If you are an introvert business owner looking for ideas and support in a noisy world, you’ve found it!

Episodes

Email marketing with Natalie Rockall

38m · Published 28 Feb 00:30

Before I invited her on the podcast, Natalie hadn’t really considered that she was an introvert. However our conversation helped her realise that her preferred solo work style and her love of noise cancelling headphones indicate her introvert tendencies!

Natalie outlined the benefits of email marketing, from its ease in getting started, to the impressive return on investment and the range of free tools that help you send professional email marketing campaigns.

We talked about good ways to build a mailing list, from pop ups and QR codes to adding new clients and inviting personal connections. We also talked about the value exchange, offering valuable information such as a digital download in return for asking for an email address.

Finally we covered the essentials of GDPR and where to go if you need more advice.

Books

Natalie recommended two books:

GDPR for Dummies by Suzanne Dibble

Eat that Frog Get More of the Important Things Done Today by Brian Tracy

Marketing Mistakes and how to avoid them

18m · Published 14 Feb 00:30

“One thing is certain in business: you will make mistakes. When you are pushing the boundaries, mistakes are inevitable - how you react is important.”

You learn far more from mistakes than successes – that can be quite a tough lesson to learn if you have built your career on doing things well, getting things right. Making a mistake in business can feel like a big personal failure and I think if you are a service business owner that brings a real worry about how other people are going to react and is it going to have impact on your business.

So this week I wanted to uncover a few marketing mistakes, from a cringe moment of my own to the biggest marketing fiasco in history. Hopefully these will make you feel a little bit better about any mistakes of your own! I round up four mistakes that many clients fall into:

1 - forgetting your current clients

2 - making it too complicated

3 - chasing the bright and shiny things (there are so many!)

4 - being inconsistent in your marketing

I’ll explain why these are common and what you can do to stop yourself falling into the same traps.

Books

In this episode I reviewed They Ask You Answer by Marcus Sheridan (a must read for anyone working in marketing, but also a super useful resource for many small business owners)

Do you want to write a book? with Ginny Carter

30m · Published 31 Jan 00:30

A book can be a hugely powerful marketing tool. Writing a book can give you authority and credibility in your industry. It also raises your profile and increases your reach. So how do you go about writing your own book?

Ginny Carter is a successful ghost writer and the award winning author of the book “Your Business Your Book”. This helpfully takes small business owners through the process of planning, writing and promoting a book which will have a major impact on the success of your business.

We spoke about why a book is a great marketing tool for your business and how to turn your expertise into something that your ideal audience wants to read. Ginny had some great advice if you find the idea of putting your ideas out into the world somewhat daunting. We also talked a lot about finding the time to write – and surprisingly it’s not about clearing your diary!

And finally, once you’ve written your book, Ginny has some helpful advice for promoting it. Do the things that make you comfortable, because the marketing that works is the marketing you do.

Books

You can read Ginny’s book Your Business Your Book, I highly recommended it.

Ginny recommended Made to Stick: Why some ideas take hold and others come unstuck by Chip and Dan Heath and Story or Die: How to Use Brain Science to Engage, Persuade, and Change Minds in Business and in Life by Lisa Cron

My big lessons from 25 years in marketing with Jenny Procter

11m · Published 11 Oct 00:30

As a follow on from my episode marketing 25 years in PR and marketing with Wendy Harris I wanted to share some of the things I’ve learnt in that time. It’s a short episode (I have bathroom fitters in this week so quiet time to record was at a premium!) packed full with top tips for small business owners including:

Why you don’t always need a plan to end up in the right place for you.

Why you definitely need a tribe. And also a coach.

Why you don’t need to worry about the next bright shiny thing in marketing.

And why you shouldn’t put all your marketing eggs in one basket – but if you were panicking at the recent Facebook outage, you already know this! These are my thoughts on what you should do instead.

Celebrating 25 years as a professional introvert with Jenny Procter

25m · Published 27 Sep 00:30

I took a brave step and handed over the interviewer’s seat for this episode to my good friend Wendy Harris, so she could ask me about my 25 years in PR and marketing!

We talked about how the industry has changed massively, but how actually we are all still trying to achieve the same things we were in the 1990s. I revealed my favourite job of the last 25 years, why I love a client with a real purpose and why I never want to do a full-time job again.

I also shared how I first knew I was an introvert and how a complete moment of self-doubt led me to want to create marketing for introverts. And if you are feeling swamped by all the bright and shiny marketing tactics, listen to my top tip for marketing as an introvert.

Nailing live video for introverts with Danielle Bayes

14m · Published 13 Sep 00:30

This week I’m re-sharing a conversation with you that I had in March 2020, with video expert Danielle Bayes of Videos Undifficulted.

Live video is the perfect way to talk to your ideal clients, and most social media platforms have a way to do this. It shows the person who runs the business (people buy from people remember!) and it’s a great way of answering questions your clients have, or showing what goes on behind the scenes.

But, hands up who is scared of doing live videos? Danielle is keen to help us overcome our fears and this episode is full of tips to encourage us to get started with live video.

Putting Your Face On Your Business With Emily Moya

14m · Published 30 Aug 00:30

This week I’m re-sharing a conversation with you that I had in late May 2020, with super talented personal brand photographer Emily Moya. In my experience introverts really don’t like putting their face on their business. I lose track of the number of clients I start working with where this is one of my observations on their website or social media – “You’re an expert in your field, so where is your face?!”

If this is you, listen to Emily’s words of wisdom to help you get more comfortable with showing up as the face of your business. It’s a slightly different format to the usual interviews, but just as packed with value as all the other episodes.
