38m · Published 24 Mar 13:00

Deborah Hawkins found herself in a depressive state after a car accident and decided to write her way out of her depression. She started a blog, No Small Thing, focusing on mindfulness and gratitude, and created an intentional gratitude practice by moving away from list-based gratitude to focusing on different gratitude ‘themes’ in her life. Deborah approaches her life through the lens of gratitude first. She has written over 500 blog posts since 2010, and her favorites are published in her book, The Best of No Small Thing, Mindful Meditations. Her companion book, Practice Gratitude, Transform Your Life, helps you find your personal Grateful Dozen.

What if Practicing Gratitude was a Key to Learning a New Language? (Anesh Daya, Ep 172)

41m · Published 15 Mar 13:00

Have you ever tried to learn a new language? Anesh Daya is a Mindset Language Coach and the founder of On the Spot Language in Toronto, an experiential language learning for International students, based in Toronto Canada. Anesh has built gratitude and expressing appreciation into the ecosystem of the process of language learning. He is a resilient person who overcame many challenges on his journey to building a successful business, and as he puts it, he found ‘gifts in dark packages’.

We discuss: "Itadakimasu" an essential phrase in your Japanese vocabulary. It's often translated as "I humbly receive," but in a mealtime setting, it's compared to "Let's eat," "Bon appétit," or "Thanks for the food." Some even liken it to the religious tradition of saying grace before eating. The uses for itadakimasu extend far beyond food. And though its roots are ancient, saying the phrase before meals is a fairly recent Japanese custom.

頂きます(いただきます)

TO RECEIVE; TO GET; TO ACCEPT; TO TAKE (HUMBLE)

Finding Gratitude in a Pandemic – Flashback to March 2020 (Ep. 171)

20m · Published 10 Mar 15:00

Most of us never expected to be in a global pandemic for more than 2 years. This week marks the 2-year point for the declaration by WHO that COVID-19 was now a global pandemic. I thought it would be interesting to listen to what I shared on the podcast on March 19, 2020, in an episode called Where Do We Find Gratitude in a Pandemic (Ep. 33): There has never been a more important time to find gratitude in our lives. We are in the middle of a global pandemic that has yet to peak in North America. It was a bit like a slow-moving tsunami – we could see it coming and never expected how quickly or how hard it would hit our shores. Now is the time for us to share our gratitude as much as possible, and as openly as possible. There will be thousands who will share the news and the updates, I invite you to share your gratitude instead.

In this episode I share where we can find gratitude right now, and several ways that we can practice gratitude daily. There is always something to be grateful for. I leave you with my daily mantra:

Thank you for this gift of another day, and the opportunity to be of service to others and to make a difference in this world.

Does Your Gratitude Practice Feel Like You're Checking a To-Do List? (Kevin Monroe, Ep 170)

53m · Published 07 Mar 14:00
Are you practicing gratitude because you feel like you have-to? Kevin Monroe learned about the benefits of a morning gratitude routine, and he started doing it as a ‘to-do’ list item. It was only after a difficult personal time with depression that he realized that to feel the real benefits of gratitude, he would have to start feel gratitude in his heart. He got a ‘download’ to start This ExtraOrdinary Life which is now ‘A global community of ordinary people that seek to live life with intention and purpose.’ Kevin now lives his days in gratitude and inspires others to do so through his community and the Gratitude Ambassadors group on LinkedIn (where we connected!).
