Ep. 30: You've got to put your own mask on first

1h 14m · Published 08 Oct 05:00

Hey Everyone,

In today's episode, we are joined by Jo Rawbone. Jo officially “discovered” she was an introvert when she completed a Myers Briggs profile in 1989. She’d always known that she was different from many of her peers, friends, and family and now she knew why. But whilst this enhanced her self-awareness, it didn’t give her the tools to manage being an introvert in a world that is largely biased towards extroverts.

Jo’s personal experience throughout her more than 26 years as a trainer and consultant, working with thousands of international clients afforded her the opportunity to witness just how problematic this bias can. Thus, began a mission: to champion the cause of introverts and promote positive action to address the ‘extraversion bias’, a mission that took her to the TEDx stage in 2019.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • How Jo became mad enough to start her mission of helping introverts flourish
  • We explore what an introvert is, and the many myths and misconceptions about what it actually means to be an introvert
  • Jo shares that in her experience of supporting introverts it’s incredibly common to hear a statement we hear a lot on the show, “I’m just not a confident person”
  • The topic of fear shows up and Jo shares her equation for managing fear in order to take action
  • The story of how Jo came to name her inner critic and her inner advocate and how this has supported her own growth and development
  • What it means to be an introvert in a world that expects everyone to speak up and say what they are thinking
  • We hear Jo use some incredible language to describe the work she does including the idea of being a “Corporate Disruptor”
  • The decades of people being told they need to be someone else or something different, and how that may have led to countless individuals struggling to be themselves
  • The difference between, acting as if, vs. faking it until you make and how this relates to confidence
  • How Jo supports teams and individuals to understand where the boundaries and edges of their comfort zones are in order to develop and improve

What a fascinating episode, we hold no boundaries when it comes to where our conversations take us, and this episode is no different. There is so much to learn and take from this episode, whether you can relate to being an introvert or not, this episode has something for us all to learn and take away.

Ep. 29: You build it before you need it

1h 21m · Published 24 Sep 05:00

Hey Everyone,

Welcome to episode 29 of the Two Coach Confidence podcast. Our aim with this podcast is to bring fun and interesting guests from all areas and walks of life to share their knowledge, stories and experiences of this mystical and subjective topic we refer to as confidence.

In today's episode we are joined by Charlotte Fowles. Charlotte is also known as ‘The Executive Adventurer’ and is an expert in silencing the inner critic and practising intentional resilience and confidence.

Previously working for many years in U.K. central government communications - including Press and Events Officer to Gordon Brown – she has a history of being trusted to deliver by high profile figures. Praised for her passion and for talking truth to power, she currently works with leaders and professionals who feel crippled by their inner critic and imposter syndrome.

After enduring over a decade of significant personal trauma - which included cancer, multiple miscarriages and severe depression to name just a few - she is an expert in creating triumph from tragedy and living a successful life in spite of this.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • We discuss the recent rise in individuals using the term Imposter Syndrome, and due to its subjectivity how it relates to confidence
  • How over time Charlotte has developed a neutral mindset when it comes to her beliefs
  • Charlotte's five step process for developing confidence
  • The idea of building confidence before you need it, instead of reacting in a particular situation
  • The fear Charlotte had about sharing her professional work online, but how comfortable she felt sharing her personal experiences and trauma
  • The area’s of life where Charlotte still finds her confidence being impacted and how she goes about managing those particular area’s
  • The story of how Charlotte became known as ‘The Executive Adventurer’
  • We find ourselves discussing fitness for functionality and enjoyment, instead of fitness for a body that looks a certain way
  • The journey Charlotte has been on to develop her confidence and the deep deep coaching work that has supported her
  • Charlotte shares the concept of parenting our own inner child, and tremendous impact this practice has had on her own personal development
  • How therapy has significantly supported the strong sense of confidence that Charlotte now possesses

What an episode, Charlotte has experienced an unfathomable amount of trauma and personal pain. Despite this, Charlotte chooses to focus on helping others who are battling with their own inner critic. As you’ll hear Charlotte's light still shines bright and her energy is contagious. It goes without saying that this is another episode packed with practical ways for you to grow and develop your confidence.

Please enjoy!

Ep. 28: Sometimes helping is not the best thing

1h 13m · Published 03 Sep 05:00

Hey Everyone,

Welcome to episode 28 of the Two Coach Confidence podcast. Our aim with this podcast is to bring fun and interesting guests from all areas and walks of life to share their knowledge, stories, and experiences of this mystical and subjective topic we refer to as confidence.

In today's episode, we have the absolute privilege of being joined by Rowena Birch. As an international judo player, Rowena competed in the Olympic Games in Atlanta and held the title of European Judo Champion. After retiring from competition, she went on to coach/manage the national judo squad (U18 years), helping to develop athletes including Sally Conway and Gemma Gibbons, who went on to win Olympic medals. She then spent 10 years coaching high-performance coaches and managers, helping them create environments that support development, motivation, and learning.

At the age of 50, Rowena decided it was time for something new and retrained as a financial adviser. Here she still uses her coaching skills to help individuals and businesses to develop financial plans and make decisions, which fit their unique needs. Rowena is also Vice president of British Judo, and a trustee for the charity Gaddum, who supported her family after the sudden death of her husband. A mother of two, Rowena now enjoys gardening, cooking, and the occasional visit back onto the judo mat.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • The misconception that confident people are confident all of the time
  • How Rowena felt to competing against a former Olympic Champion who just so happened to be one of her idols
  • The idea that if you want to become more confident, you have to be willing to get out of your comfort zone
  • Rowena kindly shares how suddenly losing her husband in a car accident significantly affected her confidence
  • Building confidence through stress and adaptation, and what that means practically
  • What it’s like to be surrounded by four world champions and how that impacted Rowena’s mindset and confidence
  • Being mindful about not taking over when you’re helping someone develop and grow their confidence
  • How to make the process of developing your confidence joyful and fun
  • Allowing yourself time when it comes to growing your confidence, it’s not an instant process
  • How big goals can be dangerous!
  • Realising that you’re not alone when it comes to feeling a certain way, especially when it comes to how you feel about your confidence
  • Having a system of building confidence through success

Rowena has a wonderfully warm energy and shares some incredibly personal experiences all with the intention of supporting you, our listeners. It’s fair to say this is one of our favourite episodes to date. The content and value provided are outstanding, listening to a former Olympic athlete share their stories, experiences and knowledge so generously was a genuine privilege.

Please enjoy!

Ep. 27: Failure is part of your journey!

35m · Published 27 Aug 07:00

Hey Everyone,

Welcome to episode 27 of the Two Coach Confidence podcast. Our aim with this podcast is to bring fun and interesting guests from all areas and walks of life to share their knowledge, stories and experiences of this mystical and subjective topic we refer to as confidence.

In today's episode we have the pleasure of being joined by star of BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing, Kristina Rihanoff. Kristina was born in Siberia and fell in love with music and dance at a young age, entering her first dance competition at just seven-years-old. There onwards, she took part in scores of competitions and became a renowned dance champion.

Kristina finished her 8 year career on “Strictly Come Dancing” after having her first daughter. Desperate to get back in shape after giving birth she knew that yoga would be the best exercise to rebuild her strength and ability to return to dancing. A yoga devotee for nearly 20 years, Kristina and partner Ben decided to open their very own Wellbeing and Yoga Centre.

In this episode,

  • Kristina shares her extraordinary journey from being a little girl with a dream, to becoming one of the most recognisable Strictly Come Dancing stars
  • How becoming a Mum has changed everything for her, and realising how much she previously worried about insignificant things
  • How Kristina has learned to love herself and her body through yoga
  • Kristina shares that after 20 years of practicing yoga she has recently connected to the spiritual side of yoga and the difference that has made to her life
  • How the work she does now through yoga helps her community think differently about confidence
  • We discuss confidence being something that can be nourished, and how Kristina enjoys helping others to feel good about themselves
  • Kristina shares how she has always been a more voluptuous dancer and how that affected her confidence earlier in her career
  • We explore the idea of doing one thing a day in order to develop your confidence
  • Kristina suggests that in order to have a clear understanding of what confidence is, it is worth dedicating time to writing down your own thoughts about confidence
  • The impact of having such amazing dance teachers in Russia and how they ultimately helped Kristina develop and grow her confidence
  • Although she’s danced for most of her life Kristina still has moments when she doesn’t feel confident, currently feeling terrified of getting back on stage in a new theatre production

What an episode, fast paced and full of energy from start to finish! Kristina has a vast amount of life experience and it's clear to see that her relationship with confidence started at a very early age. Hard working and dedicated, whilst at the same humble and honest, a set of familiar values of all the guests we have had on the podcast to date. Confidence continues to feature in many of our conversations, and is something we continue to believe needs to be discussed more in order to support people develop and grow.

Please enjoy!

Ep. 26: Our confidence takes work

1h 12m · Published 06 Aug 07:00

Hey Everyone,

In today's episode we are joined by Anupa Roper. Anupa allowed her label of ‘skinny’ to affect her choices and her feeling of worth for a long time. Now she wants to empower the young by helping them to feel happy in their own skin. She would love for the generations that follow to know that they are worthy just the way they are.

Anupa has recently published her debut children’s book ‘Sparrowlegs’ about a sparrow who learns to love the feathers she is in and realises how amazing her body is.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • Anupa shares her story of being labelled as skinny and how that has affected many of the choices she has made throughout her life
  • How we’ve ended up perpetually thinking about the way we look, and how much importance we put on the way we look
  • The impact social media and reality TV shows appear to be having on body confidence
  • Anupa’s experience of people expecting her to be confident because of her slim and petite size
  • The pressure that comes from feeling like you have to look a certain way, and the impact that can have on confidence
  • What are our bodies are here to do, vs the way we think they should look
  • The journey Anupa has had with her confidence as she has transitioned from being a teacher, Mum, and now writer and author
  • The impact of language specifically related to our bodies such as “Mum tum” and “stretch marks”
  • Anupa shares her experience that in Indian culture if you’ve got lighter skin there is a perception you’ll be more confident
  • Confidence being something that needs to be constantly and deliberately worked on if you want more of it
  • The power of parents opening up conversations with their children about body confidence
  • How parents have a responsibility to ensure their children are well informed and understand the difference between what is real and what isn’t

A sensitive and very topical episode, Anupa shares her passion and concerns around body confidence. A topic which has depth, emotion and much more to it than you may initially presume. In a world where so much of our mental stimulation is found via social media and more visual imagery than ever before, it’s no wonder there is a growing issue surrounding body confidence.
