Ep. 15: What can this Teach Me

1h 26m · Published 13 Nov 16:00

Hey Everyone,

Welcome to episode 15 of the Two Coach Confidence podcast. In today's episode we are joined by Kurt Lindley, Owner of Be More Learning & Development, South African born, Yorkshire bred, dad of 1, Kurt is a learning and development specialist with over 20 years’ experience in the field of learning and development. Kurt has worked within Olympic sport and the UK Sport domain, mentoring elite coaches, developing leaders and supporting coach educators.

In this episode, we talk about,

  • The concept of being a Polymath and why Kurt resonates with the idea of being a person of wide knowledge or learning.
  • Kurt shares the idea that if you’re going to worry about something, leave worrying until 5 minutes before the thing you’re worrying about.
  • Kurt kindly shares the tragic loss of his wife passing away 5 years ago and the impact that has had on his outlook on life, and the unexpected position he now finds himself in as a single parent.
  • Kurt shares the idea of finding “Subtle Supporters” in order for your thinking to be challenged whilst at the same time having a support network around you.
  • We ask ourselves the question, How do we separate what we think from how we feel? And why this is an important question to ask and live into.
  • We discuss how children appear to have what may be considered natural confidence, and that over time the external environment and their experience erodes that natural confidence.
  • We explore the impact of confidence within the organisation setting and how essential it is for leaders to be confident in saying, “I don't know”, whilst maintaining belief in the teams ability to create the best way forward.
  • Kurt shares his belief in sulking, having a day in your pajamas but only for a self agreed amount of time.
  • We discuss the idea of creating a virtual personal boardroom, made up of people you would love to have guiding and advising you.
  • Finally Kurt shares the idea of having just enough confidence to say hello, and how impactful that can be in developing and improving your confidence.

Kurt's energy is infectious and authentic, his passion for human learning and development shines throughout this conversation. Kurt challenges us to think about meaning and context, and to really question what we believe is important about confidence. We’re provided with thought provoking ideas and the reality that all humans at some point have battled with their confidence. There’s an abundance of warmth and compassion that comes from Kurt and we hope you enjoy this episode as much as we did recording it.

Ep. 14: The Power of the Stories You Tell Yourself

1h 15m · Published 30 Oct 04:00

Hey Everyone,

In today's episode we have the pleasure of being joined by Adam's former coach, fellow podcaster and soon to be published author, Robbie Swale. Robbie trained as a coach with The Coaching School in London and later with many other masters of supporting people to fulfil their potential. Robbie has provided coaching, training and facilitation for, among others: Swiss Re, The University of Edinburgh, BetterUp, and King’s College London. Robbie predominantly works one-on-one with leaders and entrepreneurs who are grappling with the complexity of the modern world.

In this episode, we talk about,

  • How Robbie considers himself to be a bit of an introvert and someone who has always been considered quite a shy person.
  • Robbie shares his thoughts on his current relationship with confidence and how he chooses NOT to think about it as something to worry about.
  • We open up a conversation about what the opposite of confidence is, and why that’s an important question to understand.
  • Robbie talks about the concept of resistance, and how everyone suffers from it at some point in their lives.
  • Robbie shares his belief that there’s a process to confidence, a number of steps that include, inspiration, courage, and vulnerability.
  • We discuss how using things you’re already good at can support the growth of confidence.
  • Robbie talks about the POWER of the stories we tell ourselves and how they can impact our ability to be confident.
  • Robbie shares one of his favourite rules for life in general taken from the book, The Art of Possibility.
  • We discuss how the creative process, basically creating something from nothing, can be a huge developer of confidence.
  • As we move towards the end of the conversation Robbie talks about how he has had to work out how to enjoy parties as an introvert by becoming more curious.

Robbie has a wonderful desire to share and explore his own thinking throughout this episode. As we’re sure you will agree there is a depth to Robbies thinking which will hopefully prompt you to look a little deeper into yourself and how you think about confidence. As always we finish by asking our guest what you can do to improve your own relationship with confidence.

Ep. 13: The story so far

59m · Published 16 Oct 03:00

Hey Everyone,

Welcome to episode 13 of the Two Coach Confidence podcast. As always our aim with this podcast is to bring fun and interesting guests from all areas and walks of life to share their knowledge, stories and experiences of this mystical and subjective topic we refer to as confidence.

In today's episode we take a pause on welcoming any guests to the show. Instead we take an opportunity to discuss the journey we've been on since creating the podcast and some of our own key leanings and observations.

What started as a random idea in a well known coffee shop drive thru when we were still allowed to meet without a face mask and hug each other, has now become a globally listened to podcast that has been downloaded more than 1200 times.

We've been fortunate enough to welcome an unbelievably diverse and thought provoking set of guests. All of which who have shared openly and generously about their experiences and challenges with confidence.

It's been a wonderful start to our podcasting experience, and yet we still feel as though we've so much more to cover. We hope you enjoy the slightly different format of this episode. We also want to thank each and every one of you who have taken the time to listen, provide feedback, share and download the podcast.

We would love you to get in touch and tell us what questions you want answering and how we can serve you through this podcast. If you want to get in touch please visit either of our websites where you'll find our contact details.

If you enjoy the podcast, please SUBSCRIBE to the show and leave a review. Even better, please feel free to share with anyone you feel would value from the information we provide.

Ep. 12: Always have an open mind

1h 18m · Published 02 Oct 19:00

Hey Everyone,

Welcome to episode 12 of the Two Coach Confidence podcast. Our aim with this podcast is to bring fun and interesting guests from all areas and walks of life to share their knowledge, stories and experiences of this mystical and subjective topic we refer to as confidence.

In today's episode we have the pleasure of being joined by Jack Revell. Jack has an 11 year background in the entertainment industry which has included modelling, commercial acting, podcasting, presenting and more recently being an IG Liver (if that's even a thing).

Jack has a real sense of confidence whilst at the same time has a very humble and grateful demeanour. We explore lots during this episode, from being in an industry where people are compared to each other everyday in order to get paid, to not getting a job based on the way you look!

In this episode,

  • Jack’s journey of modelling since the age of 18 working for some of the most well known brands on the planet!
  • Jack shares his thoughts on knowing what he’s NOT good at, and why this is something worthy of consideration for all of us.
  • Jack shares his challenges and journey with the way his body looks, and how he has been impacted by his thoughts on body image.
  • Jack shares how losing his father at the age of seven caused him to age beyond his years.
  • How NOT being booked for work affected Jack’s confidence, and the peaks and troughs that come from working in an industry where you very literally may not get work because your face doesn't fit.
  • Interestingly Jack shares that he has always been a confident person, however he’s more confident on set than off it. Even though he has no formal training in modelling.
  • We discuss the importance of stripping back what’s not important and doing more of what you actually enjoy.
  • As someone who is expected to spend an amount of time on social media, Jack shares what some may perceive to be a bizarre activity, deleting followers and the reason that sits behind that action.
  • As the conversation comes to an end Jack shares his belief that you almost have to have a certain amount of confidence to open up about confidence, albeit you only need to have a little bit.

It’s obvious that Jack has a deep sense of wanting to develop and grow as a human being. Another of the ingredients Kerry and I are collecting for the Secret Sauce of Confidence. The world in which Jack has operated and been a part of appears to have provided numerous opportunities to develop and grow his confidence. However, what’s important to take away is that Jack has stepped into, and taken those opportunities each and every time they have been presented to him.

Ep. 11: Failure doesn't exist

1h 39m · Published 18 Sep 08:00

Hey Everyone,

Welcome to episode 11 of the Two Coach Confidence podcast. Our aim with this podcast is to bring fun and interesting guests from all areas and walks of life to share their knowledge, stories and experiences of this mystical and subjective topic we refer to as confidence.

In today's episode we have another first on the show, we welcome back our first set of returning guests. Due to the phenomenal conversation we had with this pair in episode 9 we felt we had to continue the conversation on another episode. We therefore welcome back brothers Mark and Rob Jarram.

Just in case you haven't listened to episode 9, here's a recap of who Mark and Rob are. Mark is currently the Head Coach of Loughborough University Men's Basketball, Assistant Coach of Leicester Riders, Assistant Coach of Great Britain U20 Men's Basketball Team, and a Loughborough University Coach Developer.

Rob has played an instrumental role as a PE Specialist working on the development of a programme called Sport Education, which led to him being asked to speak at a number of conferences to share his work. During his 10 years at Loughborough College creating a number of high profile elite athlete programmes, Rob was recognised for his outstanding work and contribution to the college and students alike.

In this episode,

  • Mark and Rob share how their parents went out of their way to provide as many opportunities as possible, and how looking back this created a certain sense of confidence.
  • How their confidence grew when they realised the standards that had been instilled were good ones, and how meeting the expectations being set gave them confidence.
  • We jump into the idea that females may perceive more threat than males and therefore perceive more fear, and how this can affect confidence.
  • We discuss the idea that if you want to improve confidence stop talking about confidence!
  • What happens if you choose to fail knowing the outcome, and how this can be beneficial to your confidence. And how this links to the fantastic work of Carol Dweck on Growth vs fixed mindset.
  • We start to ask ourselves questions such as, Why would you want to be more confident? What impact would that provide? What are the top 3 things that are hampering your human potential?
  • As we move toward the end of the show we remind ourselves of the wonderful phrase coined by the amazing Brene Brown, “Fucking First Time” and how this relates to confidence.

Each and every time we open the doors to discuss this topic something new walks right on in. There’s also a sense of some common themes beginning to materialise. Environment, family, preparation, and action to mention just a few.

If you enjoy the podcast, please SUBSCRIBE to our show and leave a review. Likewise, feel free to share with anyone you feel would value from the information we provide.
