Ep. 20: Every contact leaves a trace

1h 15m · Published 19 Feb 06:00

Hey Everyone,

Welcome to episode 20 of the Two Coach Confidence podcast. Our aim with this podcast is to bring fun and interesting guests from all areas and walks of life to share their knowledge, stories and experiences of this mystical and subjective topic we refer to as confidence.

In today's episode we are joined by Iain Brunnschweiler. Husband and Father of two, Iain is currently Coach & Player Development Manager for Southampton FC. A former semi professional footballer, five years as a professional cricketer, author of two cricket coaching books, a first class degree in Sport Science, Lead Coach of England Development Programme for six years, and 18 months as Strategic Lead for Talent & Performance Coaching at UK Coaching. It’s fair to say Iain has been in, and around elite and high performance athletes for a considerable amount of time.

In this episode, we talk about,

  • How Iain’s confidence has changed both personally and professionally, and now at the grand age of 40 he now feels fairly confident.
  • Iain shares how he has built strategies made up of three discrete areas, self talk, affirmations and remembering.
  • Iain talks about confidence as something that he has an internal relationship with.
  • We discuss the idea of understanding whether or not we have the resources to do what we want, and how this can impact confidence.
  • An idea that has come up in a previous episode shows up again, creating your own personal board of trusted advisors.
  • We delve into trying to get to know your own voice and why this can relate to developing a greater sense of confidence.
  • Iain shares his thoughts on having just enough confidence to give something a go.
  • The power of bringing any situation back to it’s basic context, and in most situations it’s not life or death.
  • We listen to Iain share openly about his emotions and feelings of nervousness when he became head of international cricket.
  • We discuss how naturally occurring challenges have supported Iain to develop his confidence.
  • One of our favourite areas to talk around crops up, the importance and idea of thinking about thinking.

Iain takes us on a real journey throughout this episode, we cover a significant amount of ground and touch on some wonderful ideas, content and stories. One thing we have been able to consistently share through the podcast is that confidence impacts everyone, regardless of stature, race, profession or background. We’ve all at some point realised we wish we had more of it, and wondered how to get more of it when we've needed it.

In order to support our community further we have recently created the Two Coach Confidence Facebook Group. Feel free to come and join the group using the link below.

Ep. 19: It's Just Proper Messy

1h 20m · Published 05 Feb 06:00

Hey Everyone,

Welcome to episode 19 of the Two Coach Confidence podcast.  In today's episode we are joined by Elliott Newell. Elliott currently works for the English Institute of Sport as a Sport and Performance Scientist, specialising in Psychological Support. Elliott works 1:1 with athletes, coaches, and leaders alike developing programmes and whole sport curricula. Whilst performance ultimately provides the context of what Elliott does, personal growth and development remains his focus. A humanist philosophy to work and life, means Elliott engages in his work with a view to nurture and support talent, rather than create or fix it.

In this episode, we discuss,

  • The link between competence and confidence, and why it’s crucial to understand how the two areas co exist.
  • Elliott discusses that he’s never understood confidence as a skill, more that confidence is a way that we think.
  • Elliott shares the idea that if we feel confident it's an emotion, however if it’s a belief it’s cognitive, and therefore something we can work with.
  • We take a look at the difference between performing confidently vs being confident, and why this can be useful to consider from a personal perspective.
  • We somehow end up in a wonderful conversation about understanding the roots of your being and what your real understanding of the world is.
  • The simple, but perhaps forgotten idea that you don't have to be sick to get better.
  • Elliott introduces us to the analogy of having “handrails” to develop and grow confidence, and how this has proved incredibly useful throughout his career.
  • How Elliott never stepped too far from his secure base (comfort zone) whilst developing his sense of self and confidence.
  • Elliott’s struggle with the functional confidence of his body having suffered a serious knee injury.
  • We explore the concept that we are not our bodies, however it is the vehicle in which we interact with the world.

The concepts, ideas and depth of this conversation were fascinating for both of us. It’s clear to see Elliott has a wealth of academic knowledge, which he is able to translate into simple language that will be invaluable for you as the listener. With every new guest comes a new idea or concept that continuously develops and expands our own thoughts and beliefs about this fascinating topic we call confidence.

Ep. 18: The Power of Taking Tiny Steps

1h 17m · Published 22 Jan 06:00

Hey Everyone,

Welcome to episode 18 of the Two Coach Confidence podcast. Our aim with this podcast is to bring fun and interesting guests from all areas and walks of life to share their knowledge, stories and experiences of this mystical and subjective topic we refer to as confidence.

In today's episode we are joined by the award winning Entrepreneur, Cherish Reardon. Cherish is owner of Popsy Clothing and over the last three years has built a community of over 85,000 women. Previously a stay at home mum with anxiety, Cherish now promotes body positivity and is passionate about helping women feel more confident. She has worked with Gok Wan, designed a dress for the Brit Awards and her designs have been seen on numerous tv shows including This Morning, Mock The Week and The One Show.

In this episode, we talk about,

  • Cherish’s journey with confidence and anxiety, and how this has dramatically changed over the years, having grown up being affectionately known as little Miss Chatterbox.
  • How being seriously bullied at high school significantly impacted Cherish’s relationship with confidence, and her life in general.
  • Cherish shares how the idea of selling online to avoid job interviews has led her to founding, and developing an online retail business.
  • The fear of passing our challenges and struggles with confidence on to our children, and that this is at the core of why Cherish pushes herself to show up even when she’s nervous and scared.
  • Cherish shares that there were times when she literally struggled ordering food in restaurants, and that public environments were something she actively avoided.
  • The responsibility to lead her 85,000 strong community and demonstrate that even though she may not always feel confident it’s something that she continually works on.
  • That Cherish previously thought of confidence as something you either are, or are not.
  • How Cherish routinely sets little challenges to push herself outside of her comfort zone, and how this has led to increasing her confidence incrementally over time.
  • How powerful it has been for Cherish to share her struggles and challenges about anxiety and low levels of confidence.
  • How things as simple as sizing of clothes can dramatically impact people's confidence and how she has managed that with her own business.

Softly spoken, with a very warm and generous energy, Cherish was an absolute pleasure to have on the show. There is no doubt that there is something in this episode for anyone who can identify and relate to struggling with their confidence. Whether we like it or not, it’s becoming very clear to Kerry and I that certain experiences during our formative years can have a dramatic impact on our relationship with confidence.

The good news is it doesn’t have to define your way forward in life. The guests we are lucky enough to have joined us are proof that if you want to have more confidence in any given area of your life, it’s absolutely within your gift.

Ep. 17: I'm having the thought that

1h 18m · Published 11 Dec 08:00

Welcome to episode 17  of the Two Coach Confidence podcast. Our aim with this podcast is to bring fun and interesting guests from all areas and walks of life to share their knowledge, stories and experiences of this mystical and subjective topic we refer to as confidence.

In today's episode we are joined by Buddhist Monk Suryacitta. Suryacitta has been practicing meditation since 1989 and was ordained in 1999, during which he was given the name Suryacitta. He lived in a dedicated meditation retreat centre from 2001 - 2005. He is the author of five books on mindfulness, happiness and compassion including, Happiness and How it Happens - Finding Contentment through Mindfulness.

In this episode, we talk about,

  • Surya shares his fascinating journey to becoming a Buddhist Monk, including his time living in a retreat centre for 5 years.
  • We discuss that we all suffer from stress, pressure, and other unwanted emotions and yet in many instances these experiences are self inflicted.
  • Surya shares the idea that the mind can use you, OR you can use the mind, and how this can relate to confidence.
  • Throughout the conversation Surya helps us to understand the power of reframing our thoughts and how to look at our human experience from an observational perspective.
  • We discuss that we are all addicted to our own thoughts and thinking and how this can be detrimental to us.
  • Surya shares the idea that thoughts hook us in, they’re a carrot. However, on many occasions they’re an empty promise.
  • Surya shares a wonderful story from which he created the concept of “nexting” and how so many of us suffer from always thinking about what’s next.
  • We explore the idea that when we truly begin to feel, we can begin to heal.
  • Similar to other guests Surya identifies that change has to be something individuals want to do, it can’t be forced.
  • During the episode we touch on the mind being a tool. A tool which we can learn to pick up and put down as and when we need it.
  • Surya shares that pauses are the forgotten medicine, and that they are completely free.
  • We explore the statement, I’m having the thought that….. And how this little sentence can transform your life.

This episode is packed full of wisdom, ideas and wonderful stories to help us challenge and reflect on the way we think. Kerry and I won’t lie, we had a wonderful time being in Surya’s presence and listening to him generously share his experiences. Bizarrely we don’t actually delve too deep into the idea of confidence, instead we just let the conversation flow. This is a very special episode for so many reasons, Kerry and I are extremely excited for everyone who takes the opportunity to listen to this episode.

Please Enjoy!

Ep. 16: Taking Responsibility

1h 21m · Published 27 Nov 04:00

Hey Everyone,

Welcome to episode 16 of the Two Coach Confidence podcast. Our aim with this podcast is to bring fun and interesting guests from all areas and walks of life to share their knowledge, stories and experiences of this mystical and subjective topic we refer to as confidence.

In today's episode we have the pleasure of being joined by Simon Ong. Everything that Simon does is built around inspiring people to see their world differently and igniting their imagination of what is truly possible so that they can lead an extraordinary life. As an award-winning coach and international keynote speaker, he has appeared on Sky News, BBC, Forbes, and has spoken at some of the world's most successful organisations like Virgin, Barclays, Salesforce and Microsoft.

In this episode, we talk about,

  • Simon's journey from joining the financial services industry literally just before the 2008 global crash, and how he’s ended up becoming a keynote speaker and award winning coach.
  • Simon shares his Chinese roots and the expectations that his parents had of him to become a Doctor, a Banker or a Solicitor.
  • We discuss the idea that confidence is linked to our own internal energy, and how understanding how to manage our energy can support improving our confidence.
  • As with many of the other guests who have joined us, Simon shares a similar view that confidence comes from taking action, even if that action is small.
  • We remind ourselves that remembering just how far we’ve come is an essential element to our sense of confidence.
  • Simon discusses the concept of focusing outwards instead of inwards when he’s in a situation where he feels nervous.
  • One of Simon’s favorite exercises from the classic book, Think and Grow Rich. The idea of creating an imaginary board of advisors.
  • We explore that as humans we don’t see the world as it is, rather we see it as we are. And why this is important in the context of confidence.
  • Simon goes on to share the idea that confidence starts off as a skill, but over time almost matures into a feeling.
  • As we move towards the end of the episode Simon provides us with his top three tips, all based around his deep understanding of personal development.

Simon's depth and knowledge of personal development is outstanding, the wisdom he shares throughout this episode is fantastic. There’s something in this episode for everyone. His journey and transition to becoming a keynote speaker is inspirational to say the least! Simon’s confidence has clearly come from his own personal development and his discipline to stay true to what he believes in.
