Episode 58: Brain Health & More with Jan Saran
49m · PublishedMany moons ago, Thomas Edison said, "the doctor of the future will give no medication, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, diet and the cause and prevention of disease." More and more I see glimpses of this and it is gives me hope for a better future. I believe in complimentary medicine where we can combine the best of treatments for health and wellbeing. Whether you have optimal health or are struggling right now, every time you eat or drink, you have the opportunity to feed disease or fight it.
I take and share a product called Juice Plus+ because it offers me 30 different fruits, veggies and berries in a capsule or a gummy. I eat a lot of plants already, but cannot eat 9-13 servings in that variety on a consistent basis. Juice Plus+ helps to bridge the gap. I also love growing some of my own plants via the Tower Garden. It's aeroponic and super easy to grow leafy greens, peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers and so much more right on my balcony. This year for the first time, I'll bring my tower inside and grow my garden with lights.

32m · PublishedA healthy diet is essential for good health. What that looks like can vary over time, so it's really important to listen to your body and pivot when you notice changes in your health. Although I prefer to eat a plant-centric diet, I have never gone vegan for more than a 30 day stint. I tend to go in a direction 80-90% and then listen to my body for cues on what it wants and needs. Play around a bit and see what works for you.

16m · PublishedThis special edition is for anyone looking to jump-start a gluten-free lifestyle and/or for those participating in the Shred 10 program. I have been eating gluten-free since 2015 and want to make the transition as easy as possible for anyone looking to give it a try. After you listen to this podcast, please let me know if you would like a copy of the Gluten-Free Challenge pdf that includes a great shopping list and more recipes. I also have a journal you might enjoy using for mindfulness and to document your food (in)tolerances.
The Shred 10 is a program run by my Juice Plus+ partners. Participants are asked to think of 10 habits they would like to add, reduce or eliminate for 10 days. We always recommend eating gluten-free and dairy-free during this program in order to lower inflammation and to regulate ph balance. The goal is to eat real food in its whole form, to maximize your nutrient intake and stimulate your bodies natural cleansing process. While you're detoxing from foods, you might also consider how you are affected by other stressors in your life including the environment, personal care products, relationships, etc.
My Shred 10 usually consists of the following habits:
Add:
- Drink 64 oz of plain water
- Eat more plant and animal protein
- Eat 1-2 smoothies per day
- Retire to bed 30 minutes earlier than usual and with the goal of sleeping 8 hours per night
Reduce
- Alcohol (I give myself permission to have one (1/2 glass) of wine if I'm socializing with friends during my shred)
- Screen time
- Interaction with people who tempt me and/or test my patience
Eliminate
- Gluten
- Dairy
- Breakfast (I use an eating window of 10:00 - 7:00)
