19. Health Care Practitioner Mental & Physical Burn Out - The Struggle is Real with Dr. Judy Magalhaes
30m · PublishedFor today’s episode, we have Dr. Judy, who is a certified functional medicine specialist, a Board Certified geriatric pharmacist, lifestyle coach, and diabetes care and education specialist. She is the CEO and founder of holistic options and personal empowerment also known as hope, offering a multifaceted program to provide relief from burnout, stress, fatigue, and chronic disease. Hope uses a transformative approach to target the restoration of health and well being in both body and mind. As a functional medicine practitioner, Dr. Judy understands there is no magic pill to treat symptoms or disease. What works for some may cause harm to others. She is passionate about helping other people identify the root causes of their symptoms, unravel their origins, and then use them to optimize their health and quality of life. Her focus is on individualized targeted therapies based on each person's unique needs. Rather than the overuse one size fits all standardized approach of care many people are becoming unsatisfied with. Get to know her more!
“The job turned from awesomeness and firmness into corporate regulatory management, Judy, sitting at our desk running reports, quality management, all that kind of stuff. So I was burnt out probably about 10 years into the hospital management job. It was intense. So the burnout started, at least then that I can remember and I had to leave that job. ”
- How she firmly believes that healthcare workers need some break too.
- The lessons she learned in a hard way through this COVID situation.
- Taking care of oneself is the number one rule if she wants to take care of others.
- PTSD and how it affects her and the people in healthcare.
- How a friend saved Dr. Judy from a darkhole.
Dr. Judy Magalhaes is a Certified Functional Medicine Specialists, Board-Certified Geriatric Pharmacist, Lifestyle Coach, and Diabetes Care & Education Specialist. She is the CEO & Founder of Holistic Options & Personal Empowerment, LLC (a.k.a. HOPE, LLC) offering a multi-faceted program to provide relief from burnout, stress, fatigue and chronic disease. HOPE uses a transformative approach to target the restoration of health and wellbeing in both body and mind.
For more than 30 years, Judy has worked in multiple healthcare settings ranging from hospitals, community, long-term and primary care to collaborate with providers and patients to optimize medication regimens, reduce adverse reactions, and manage chronic diseases. In addition to her many achievements in quality and safety initiatives, provider-patient satisfaction and improving medication adherence, Judy was also recognized as “Preceptor of the Year” by Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (MCPHS) pharmacy interns, for her mentorship in the acute care setting.
Even as she thrived in this award-winning career, Judy felt the toll of her high-stress and demanding job as a clinical pharmacist manager and began to see it as the probable “root cause” of her own declining health and chronic symptoms (stress, headaches, weight gain, fatigue, anxiety, and pain). She sought new ways to improve her health without prescription medications or surgical interventions. It was during this time of research and reflection that Judy discovered Functional Medicine and subsequently used it to transform her health through lifestyle changes and nutrition.
As she closely examined her decades spent working in the healthcare system, Judy developed an awareness and realization that even with modern medical interventions and medications, people stayed sick and their battles with chronic diseases waged on, often attributed to age or bad genes. More medications were doled out to control symptoms and a “prescribing cascade” ensued, elevating risks of adverse effects, drug interactions, toxicities, and nutrient deficiencies. Judy watched people take excess medications and yet they remained ill. She knew there was a better way.
As a Functional Medicine practitioner, Dr. Judy understands there is no magic pill to treat symptoms or diseases. What works for some, may cause harm to others. She is passionate about helping people identify the root causes of their symptoms, unravel their origins, and then use them to optimize their health and quality of life. Her focus is on individualized, targeted therapies based on each person’s unique needs, rather than the overused one-size-fits-all standardized approach of care many are becoming unsatisfied with. Dr. Judy is thrilled to bring her experience and passion in this new realm. Through expertise and her own personal journey, she is excited to deploy her knowledge and wisdom to help patients restore good health through holistic options and functional medicine practices.
