Does Women's March Madness have more intrigue than Men's? + Big Ten and SEC's CFP doomsday button

1h 9m · Published 11 Mar 22:18

Dan Wetzel, Ross Dellenger & SI’s Pat Forde kick off the podcast by reacting to the kerfuffle between LSU and South Carolina's Women's basketball teams in the SEC tournament over the weekend. The trio believes it might be one of the best rivalries in all of college sports right now. Wetzel pleads to the committee for these two teams to be on the same side of the bracket to meet up deep in the tournament. All three discuss if the Women's tourney has more juice than the Men's bracket this year.

The three then discuss the latest proposed CFP revenue split model that draws a clear line between the top two conferences and the rest of the sport. Wetzel and Forde discuss if the SEC and Big Ten commissioners are ready for the legacy of potentially blowing up college sports as we know it. Dellenger breaks down how this new CFP revenue split could further destabilize the ACC.

After the break, the three discuss two gambling related stories in college sports and if either have any merit to them. Wetzel then re-introduces the 'Say Something Nice' segment for March Madness. All three share what they are looking forward to most this time of year. Forde also makes a plea for Indiana State to be an at-large bid in the Men's Tourney.

The College Football Draft? A debate on ways to replace recruiting in college football

1h 7m · Published 06 Mar 21:44

Dan Wetzel, Ross Dellenger & SI’s Pat Forde kick off the podcast by reacting to the news that the Dartmouth Men's Basketball team is unionizing and yet another sign of college athletes eventually becoming employees of the school. It was teased in a pod last week and a full discussion on this topic has finally come: Could we ever see a college football draft that replaces the current chaos of recruitment?

The trio weigh the pros and cons of a theoretical college football draft. Dellenger points out that the idea isn't as far fetched as it first sounds, hinting that it's come up in closed board meetings before. Wetzel proposes a high school combine and individual conference drafts. The three agree it's far off from ever happening but the current state of recruiting isn't sustainable for anyone.

The three also react to the news that college football will FINALLY have helmet comms, tablets on the sidelines and a two-minute warning. While Wetzel is excited for the needed updates, Dellenger points out this could turn more traditional fans off as college football resembles the NFL even more.

The three end the show discussing if they'd watch a Nick Saban-Bill Belichick type 'Manningcast' and share a story about a Kentucky school evacuation from fart smells:

1:28 - Ripple effect of Dartmouth Men's Basketball team unionizing.

9:40 - What if College Football got rid of recruiting?

17:40 - Dan proposes a High School Combine and College Football draft

34:10- Why employment brings it's own challenges for student athletes

The good, the bad, and downright ugly of the 14-team CFP proposal

1h 3m · Published 04 Mar 20:15

Dan Wetzel, Ross Dellenger & SI’s Pat Forde kick off the podcast by dissecting, debating and destroying all aspects of the latest 14-team CFP proposal. Wetzel makes fun of the 3-3-2-2-1 pitch and why the automatic byes for the Big Ten and SEC are the antithesis of American sports. Forde says it's bully ball and manipulation from the top two conferences. Dellenger says the conversations and proposal are here to stay.

Wetzel ponders if the two automatic bids for the ACC and Big 12 is actually a win for both of those conferences. The trio debates if the proposal could even be a stabilizer for the conference and be an incentive for Florida State to stay long term.

The trio then recap the biggest headlines from the NFL Scouting Combine and why two well-known internet conspiracies became talkers in Indy. Wetzel also shares a story about UNLV's head football coach riding a bull to inspire his team and recruits and wonders if other college coaches will resort to riding wild animals.

The three end the pod with a 'People's Court' involving a 45,000 year old worm having babies in Russia and a Big Mac record that makes Ross nauseous.

1:00 - 3-3-2-2-1 and 0 patience from Dan on new 14 team-CFP format pitch

3:00 - The good, bad and ugly of the 14-team playoff proposal

ID'ing the most polarizing QB this draft season & future of Army-Navy in expanded CFP

1h 5m · Published 29 Feb 03:59

Dan Wetzel, Ross Dellenger & SI’s Pat Forde kick off the podcast discussing the current relevance of the NFL Scouting Combine. Well Dan and Pat do, Ross just disappears at the start of the show. Once Ross returns, the trio debates which QB in this draft process will become the 'lightning rod' prospect of 2024. Wetzel, Dellenger and Forde breakdown each of the top QBs college careers and what skills will translate in the NFL.

The three then discuss the future of the Army-Navy game in an expanded CFP world. With a larger playoff starting earlier in December, and potential for even more expansion, 'America's Game' in the future may no longer have their standalone Saturday slot the second weekend of December.

Wetzel then shares a bizarre bathroom story from the start of the college baseball season that will have you in the dumps. Wetzel also sounds off on his alma mater's (UMASS) decision to join the MAC.

Dan and Pat end the show reacting to a women's college lacrosse referee story that is a real stinker.

Latest NIL ruling might be final blow for NCAA & is court storming good or bad?

1h 10m · Published 26 Feb 20:56

Dan Wetzel, Ross Dellenger & SI’s Pat Forde kick off the podcast reacting to the latest court ruling in Tennessee that essentially seals the fate for the NCAA and it's inability to put guardrails on NIL. The trio believes there may be no more legal levers to pull for the NCAA to regulate NIL in college sports. Wetzel tries to find a legitimate issue with NIL other than school officials and coaches complaining about it.

The trio then debate how out of touch the NCAA is with reality and why there could be potential for the top four football conferences to eventually break away from the organization. Wetzel also makes the case why the NCAA needs a central PR message to show that college sports, is in fact, not falling apart.

After the break, Wetzel and the guys applaud the latest comments from NCAA president Charlie Baker on the transfer portal. The crew also brings up Arizona State head football coach Kenny Dillingham's latest comments on why coaching college football is a dream job, not a dystopia, and why more people need to recognize that.

The trio then debates potential punishments for court storming and if you can actually stop them. Dellenger also provides an update from an NCAA's infraction committee.

The crew ends the show by reacting to the latest controversy around the world's oldest dog and the legitimacy of world records.

14:45 - NCAA's future and continued disconnect with reality

29:45 - Dan defends Charlie Baker's stance on transfer portal

New College Football Playoff format approved, future CFP models & what happens to Notre Dame?

1h 5m · Published 22 Feb 20:50

Dan Wetzel, Ross Dellenger & SI’s Pat Forde kick off the podcast analyzing the new approved format for the College Football Playoff, which will have five automatic qualifiers and seven at-large bids. There is already much discomfort from the SEC & Big Ten about the amount of automatic qualifiers, but we finally have an expanded 12-team playoff. The cast breaks down who wins in this scenario & why the top two conferences are already grasping to get more power.

Where does that leave Notre Dame though? The private, conference-less university has been in the middle of the spotlight when discussing the new CFP format. In this new design and without a Power Five (or Power Four) conference to call home, if Notre Dame were ever to be a top-4 team to receive an automatic qualifier, they would forego the first-round bye for the fifth seed and take on likely a Group of Five qualifier.

Afterwards, the guys debate why proposals for an additional two teams in the playoff is madness, and look back to how we got to this point where a 12-team playoff has been approved, and the CFP is already looking to blow up the bracket for a 14-team version before the first games have even been played.

To close out the show, residents in West Virginia are hosting a candlelight vigil for a restaurant.

1:00 - New 12-team CFP format has been approved

15:04 - What happens to Notre Dame in the expanded playoff?

28:34 - New 14-team CFP models are already being pitched

59:20 - The People’s Court: A unique candle light vigil in West Virginia

Ross provides an update on when we could see the next format take shape.

Bill O’Brien hired by Boston College, expanding college tournaments & poor flight etiquette

1h 7m · Published 15 Feb 19:56

Dan Wetzel, Ross Dellenger & SI’s Pat Forde react to discussions surrounding expansion for the NCAA’s college basketball tournaments and the College Football Playoff.

The college leaders are meddling again and the guys are not happy about it. This time the college basketball championship tournament is drawing attention. After rumblings about possible expansion, the crew explains why expanding the field would be a mistake.

On the football side, the CFP could be expanding before the next format even begins. Conference commissioners and the CFP committee are still not in unison about the automatic qualifier rules. Dan, Pat & Ross explain what this means for college football going forward.

After news of Georgia State head coach Shawn Elliot leaving to coach at the University of South Carolina, the podcast begins to dissect the trend of Group of Five head coaches leaving their teams to take a different role at a high-level Power Five program.

Meanwhile, in other coaching carousel news, Boston College has finished their head coaching search by hiring former Alabama and New England Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien. The crew breaks down the hire with optimism for O’Brien, who could be a great fit for the Eagles.

Lastly, The People’s Court takes on a restless airline passenger & bugs on a plane.

1:00 - Should the college basketball national championship tournament expand?

26:12 - Will we see another CFP expansion soon?

37:06 - More Group of Five coaches are leaving for Power Five jobs

Chip Kelly to Ohio State, DeShaun Foster takes over at UCLA & is Power Slap the next great sport?

1h 10m · Published 13 Feb 20:56

Dan Wetzel, Ross Dellenger & SI’s Pat Forde kick off the podcast breaking down the coaching turnover that took place over the last few days at UCLA.

It all started when UCLA head coach Chip Kelly decided to take the open offensive coordinator position at Ohio State late last week. Kelly made waves by leaving a respected head coaching position to become a coordinator within the Big Ten (which is now home to both universities). The guys wonder if this move could signal the new nature of college head coaches or if UCLA wasn’t doing enough on their end to get a great football program going.

Meanwhile, DeShaun Foster will be the next man to take the helm for the Bruins. The podcast wants to see the UCLA alum and former NFL running back tap into the rich recruiting bed of California to make the program more competitive.

This week, Pat reflected on one of the craziest coaching offseasons in history, the 2018 coaching derby. After 6 years, only one coach from the historic pool is still at their program.

Later, Ross provides an update on the Tennessee vs. NCAA hearing & when fans can hope for a decision.

Outside of sports, country singer Toby Keith passed away last week, so the crew reflects on his career and fandom of Oklahoma athletics.

Nick Saban joins College GameDay & did Kirk Herbstreit flip Dylan Raiola to Nebraska?

1h 0m · Published 08 Feb 06:35

Dan Wetzel, Ross Dellenger & SI’s Pat Forde examine the news that Kirk Herbstreit may have contributed to quarterback Dylan Raiola flipping from Georgia to Nebraska.

In an interview with Rivals, Dylan’s father Dominic Raiola recalls a phone call with Kirk Herbstreit discussing the impact that his son would have on Nebraska. Raiola’s flip is not only a flip from Georgia to Nebraska, but also a flip from the SEC, which has a media deal with Herbstreit’s employer ESPN, to the Big Ten, which has broadcasts with Fox.

In other TV news, following a very brief retirement, Nick Saban has made his next move to join ESPN’s College GameDay crew. The podcast predicts what Nick Saban’s role could be on the program and if he will even have the patience for the show’s theatrics.

Later, Ross provides an update on the latest College Football Playoff meetings. While not many tangible moves were made in the latest session, the group is definitely eyeing the future.

Elsewhere, the Boston College head coaching job still vacant, so the guys discuss who would be the best fit for the Eagles. The two main candidates are Paul Chryst and Bill O’Brien, who has a strong familiarity with the New England fanbase.

Dan is in Las Vegas covering the Super Bowl, so the podcast reflects on the college careers of some of the stars for the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers. The conversation shifts to how the media surrounding the Super Bowl has changed.

Lastly, The People’s Court takes on a Texas Dairy Queen that was serving more than ice cream.

1:00 - Did Kirk Herbstreit encourage Dylan Raiola to flip from Georgia to Nebraska?

13:06 - Nick Saban will join College GameDay

22:21 - ESPN, Fox & Warner Bros. Discovery are developing a new sports streaming service
