CFP semifinals recap: Michigan stuffs Alabama in OT, Washington outduels Texas

58m · Published 02 Jan 12:12

The final four-team edition of the CFP semifinals played out Monday night in Los Angeles & New Orleans and Dan Wetzel, Ross Dellenger & SI's Pat Forde convene for a late-night podcast to recap all of the action.

In the Rose Bowl, Jim Harbaugh's Michigan team finally made it past the semifinal round as JJ McCarthy and the Wolverines pushed past Alabama in single overtime 27-20. Sloppy mistakes, botched snaps & special teams errors plagued the game and Michigan has finally made it to the CFP title game. Can the Wolverines go on to win it all after the soap opera that was Harbaugh's 2023 campaign?

Ross & Pat were in attendance for the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans, and they describe the scene as a red-hot Michael Penix Jr. performance pushed the Huskies over the top in a high-scoring 37-31 affair over the Longhorns. Penix looked unstoppable, delivering laser after laser all night, with a 430 yard, 2 TD performance in the Superdome, but ultimately the Huskies defense needed to make the final plays of the game as Quinn Ewers lead a stunning final drive to almost snatch a Texas victory in the closing seconds.

College Football Playoff semifinals preview, Coach Prime speaks on FSU snub & FSU sues ACC

1h 9m · Published 28 Dec 03:09

Dan Wetzel, Ross Dellenger & SI’s Pat Forde are back from the holiday weekend to dissect the latest from the ongoing saga in Tallahassee as FSU has sued the ACC over their grant of rights deal in order to leave the conference. The guys discuss how this move, if granted in favor of Florida State, would open the door for other ACC schools to leave, thereby crushing the conference.

Meanwhile, Coach Prime gave his thoughts on Florida State not making the playoffs with an undefeated record and claimed that the CFP committee wouldn’t have left FSU out if he were the head coach there – a bold statement indeed. The guys dive into whether or not Deion Sanders would be enough of a draw to have gotten his team to the CFP bracket on his fame alone.

Lane Kiffin impressed again this offseason by retaining his title of the ‘Portal King.’ The Ole Miss head coach, while publicly dissatisfied with the college football offseason, has continued to thrive in its increasingly messy conditions. In other transfer portal news, the NCAA is expected to review new proposals for the portal which include higher academic requirements and penalties for underperforming academic programs.

The CFP semifinals are right around the corner, so the podcast breaks down the #4 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide against the #1 ranked Michigan Wolverines in the Rose Bowl and the #3 ranked Texas Longhorns taking the #2 ranked Washington Huskies in the Sugar Bowl.

Emergency podcast: Florida State is attempting to leave the ACC

1h 6m · Published 22 Dec 00:21

Dan Wetzel & Ross Dellenger huddle together after news broke Thursday that Florida State is trying to get out of their grant of rights deal with the ACC in order to move to a new conference. FSU previously made a push to gain entry to the SEC last summer, but were not accepted. The school is now making a bigger push to leave after seeing programs in the SEC and Big Ten generate more revenue than them due to their lucrative deals.

The SEC is seemingly the first conference that FSU will chase after, but the Big Ten could swoop in. Dan & Ross discuss whether or not the SEC even wants FSU and how the Big Ten is just trying to stack assets so they could end up making the push for the Seminoles

If Florida State is granted an exit from the conference, we could see the ACC crumble similar to the Pac-12. The guys debate which other schools could leave the conference & whether or not they would be better fits than FSU at a new destination.

To close out the podcast, The People’s Court takes on a wild party at a taco bell.

Who won National Signing Day, future bowl game tech & Jeff Traylor’s iced coffee bath

1h 1m · Published 21 Dec 01:33

Dan Wetzel & Ross Dellenger kick off the podcast diving into the action stemming from this year’s National Signing Day. Per usual, Alabama & Georgia had good recruiting classes, while Florida has dropped significantly in the class rankings since early November. Ohio State and Ryan Day had a few awkwardly timed scares as Day had to leave a press conference to find out whether or not the Buckeyes were retaining a top recruit.

The remains of the Pac-12 have found a new home for athletics outside of football and baseball. The West Coast Conference will be where Oregon State & Washington State sports will be hosted moving forward with the schools’ football programs still searching for their best possible option.

UTSA and head coach Jeff Traylor were able to get a win in the Frisco Bowl over Marshall, leading to a classic reaction from Traylor after having a giant iced coffee poured over him — a new take on the Gatorade bath.

Keen college football watchers may notice some upgraded technology in bowl games this week. Video tablets and in-helmet radios are getting their trial run in a handful of games before potentially being fully implemented into college football in future seasons. Ross gives a breakdown as to why we haven’t seen them in use before and why they could be approved soon.

Lastly, The People’s Court rules on how Louisville football players would fare against certain animals in the San Diego Zoo.

1:00 - National Signing Day recap

11:32 - Florida’s tough month of flips

19:42 - Ryan Day’s nail-biting NSD

Syracuse lands Kyle McCord, NCAA’s new waiver hearings & Jerry Kill is unhappy with New Mexico

1h 6m · Published 18 Dec 20:11

With another week of the college football offseason underway, the transfer portal is being utilized more and more. Dan Wetzel, Ross Dellenger & SI’s Pat Forde are back to kick off more transfer portal talk, as Coach Prime has reloaded in the trenches, Washington lands Will Howard and former Ohio State QB Kyle McCord has found a new home at Syracuse.

McCord, who was 11-1 as a starter at Ohio State, decided that the next best step for him was taking the lead signal caller for the Syracuse Orange. The podcast analyzes the move and examines why quarterbacks are so willing to enter the transfer portal for a new program. Quarterbacks know that they not only need to play, but they need to start, so when Ohio State couldn’t commit to McCord, he found a new home in upstate New York.

The NCAA is heading into another round of waiver hearings after last week’s session. The guys discuss the latest deliberations around the transfer portal and highlight that we could be looking at a future where there aren’t any transfer restrictions moving forward.

UCLA head coach Chip Kelly took some time in a postgame press conference to pitch his idea for the future of college football: Kelly believes that every program should be independent, with two 64-team conferences broken into Power Five and Group of Five.

In other news, New Mexico State head coach Jerry Kill was not happy with the practice field restrictions that New Mexico’s administration put on his program. The restrictions came after a video surfaced of New Mexico State quarterback Diego Pavia allegedly urinating on the Lobos logo inside their practice facility.

Lastly, the People’s Court takes on a case of donut van thievery.

1:00 - This year’s transfer portal is coming into focus

2023 Bowl Bonanza, part I: More transfer portal news & will Dylan Raiola flip to Nebraska?

1h 16m · Published 13 Dec 21:30

Dan Wetzel, Ross Dellenger & SI’s Pat Forde react to rumors that no. 1 quarterback prospect Dylan Raiola could flip his commitment from the University of Georgia to Nebraska. Raiola has family ties with the Cornhuskers and Matt Rhule’s Nebraska team is looking for a jump-start as they head into a more competitive Big Ten.

In transfer portal news, Miami quarterback Tyler Van Dyke has transferred to Wisconsin. The longtime Hurricane is heading north for a fresh start and this Wisconsin program is surely hoping that Van Dyke can help modernize their offense. Elsewhere, Riley Leonard has decided to transfer to Notre Dame. After an injury-ridden season at Duke, Leonard has the chance to elevate the Fighting Irish offense after Sam Hartman departs for the NFL Draft.

The guys then look at the future of the transfer portal, as more hearings and legislature regarding the mechanism are due shortly. Seven states are currently pushing to have all rules surrounding the transfer portal eliminated. Additionally, MAC commissioner John Steinbrecher is aiming to dismantle the NCAA’s waiver rules.

In the second half of the show, the guys make their picks against the spread in part I of the return of the College Football Enquirer’s Bowl Bonanza.

Jayden Daniels wins Heisman, Dillon Gabriel transfers to Oregon & chaos in the Dakotas

1h 1m · Published 11 Dec 19:19

Dan Wetzel, Ross Dellenger & SI’s Pat Forde give their thoughts on LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels winning this season’s Heisman Trophy on Saturday night. The guys explain their votes for the award and break down why Daniels separated himself as the #1 candidate on a loaded panel.

In transfer portal news, Oklahoma quarterback Dillon Gabriel is heading west as he has decided to transfer to Oregon. Gabriel is hoping to find the success that Bo Nix found with a fresh start under Dan Lanning. The other top QBs left in the portal are beginning to make their rounds as Kyle McCord is visiting Nebraska & Riley Leonard is visiting Notre Dame. Elsewhere, Coach Prime and Colorado have been busy since the regular season ended. The Buffaloes are stocking up on offensive linemen in the portal as well as signing 5-star offensive tackle Jordan Seaton.

In a rare double block of North Dakota news, the guys examine North Dakota State’s Matt Entz becoming USC’s next linebackers coach and talk about NDSU fans guessing the ticket portal password for a matchup against South Dakota and scooping up tickets saved for South Dakota’s boosters.

Closing out the podcast, Pat provides his top three college football plays that were overturned (inspired by Travis Kelce’s backwards lateral on Sunday night) and The People’s Court takes on a case involving an inmate driver that went rogue.

New revenue sharing FBS subconference, Kyle McCord enters the transfer portal & is the CFP committee obsolete?

1h 3m · Published 05 Dec 20:16

Dan Wetzel, Ross Dellenger & SI’s Pat Forde kick off the podcast, analyzing the new reports that NCAA president Charlie Baker is planning on building a new Division I subconference with a focus on athlete revenue sharing. Ross details Baker’s plans that would allow qualified schools to control their own revenue sharing with athletes. This new development leads to questions about the future of Olympic sports and what happens when schools are given full control over the compensation for their athletes.

Ohio State quarterback Kyle McCord has entered the transfer portal after posting an 11-1 season for the Buckeyes. The move appeared to be mutual after head coach Ryan Day did not commit to McCord as the starter in 2024. The guys break down the pros and cons of the quarterback surge in the transfer portal. Elsewhere in the portal, Texas A&M’s Walter Nolen has entered after two seasons as an Aggie. The top recruit is opting for a new home instead of testing the Mike Elko system. Also, QB Tyler Buchner is planning on switching sports to lacrosse after a couple rollercoaster seasons with Notre Dame and Alabama.

Later, the guys return to Florida State’s exclusion from the College Football Playoff. Was the committee wary of the Seminoles after seeing their offensive struggles with Brock Glenn at the helm against Louisville in the ACC Championship game?

Lastly, now that the college football regular season has concluded, the show is ready to announce this year’s winner of Race for the Case.
