Dan Wetzel, Ross Dellenger & SI’s Pat Forde examine the fallout from SEC & Big Ten commissioners Greg Sankey and Tony Petitti creating a new partnership on the future of college football.

Don’t call it an alliance, the SEC and Big Ten are now jointly working on their own proposal outside of the NCAA to progress college athletics. The guys highlight the pros and cons of this news along with how and if the NCAA can counter this development. This proposal could include a pitch to create a new college football league, or it could solidify a balanced payment structure for student athletes across all levels.

With the news of Jeff Hafley leaving Boston College to serve as the defensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers and rumors of Chip Kelly moving on from UCLA, the podcast discusses whether or not we will see more coaches leave college for the NFL.

New details from the Brad Bohannon sports gambling scandal have emerged and the crew revels in the carelessness.

To close out the show, Oakland University used a unique tactic to create a distraction for opponents shooting free throws.

1h 6m · Published 31 Jan 22:19

Dan Wetzel, Ross Dellenger & SI’s Pat Forde devote today’s episode to Tennessee’s lawsuit against the NCAA after reports that the University of Tennessee is under investigation for NIL violations. The school has received help from both the Tennessee and Virginia attorneys general in a lawsuit against the NCAA in attempts to get a court’s ruling to absolve them. The guys dive into whether or not Tennessee committed any violations, as well as if the NCAA can retroactively enforce any punishments.

The podcast then debates about whether or not the current college athletics structure should involve guardrails and, if found guilty, whether or not the NCAA could invoke the death penalty on the Volunteers.

Later in the show, with March Madness nearing, the podcast takes a look at this weekend’s packed college hoops action.

To close out the episode, The People’s Court opens up a case on a gassy airplane passenger.

Jim Harbaugh leaves Michigan, expectations for Sherrone Moore & does ‘Horns Down’ cross the line?

1h 10m · Published 29 Jan 23:15

Dan Wetzel, Ross Dellenger & SI’s Pat Forde give their thoughts on the news of Jim Harbaugh leaving Michigan to coach the Los Angeles Chargers.

After a storied and drama-filled college tenure, Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh has chosen to return to the NFL and coach the Los Angeles Chargers. The podcast reflects on his time at Michigan and revisits their favorite moments of the Harbaugh era.

Michigan offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore will become the next head coach for the Wolverines. The guys examine what Sherrone Moore can do to improve the program the season after winning a national championship.

With Harbaugh gone, the NCAA is left with some decisions to make Michigan’s alleged recruiting & cheating violations. The crew debates what punishments would be appropriate for Michigan, and more importantly, if the NCAA will be able to enforce any punishments that would be more than just a slap on the wrist.

The University of Texas’ endless pearl-clutching about the “Horns Down” taunt continues to heat up after BYU fans were made to take off shirts spelling out the phrase at a basketball game this weekend. The guys are shocked at Texas’ sensitivity and question whether or not they will be able to handle the even rowdier fans of the SEC.

To close out the show, the crew takes a look at former LSU wide receiver Kayshon Boutte getting busted for numerous sports gambling charges while at school.

College football’s biggest issues: is tampering real, will Charlie Baker make athletes employees & how far would you go for fried pickles?

1h 2m · Published 24 Jan 23:31

Dan Wetzel, Ross Dellenger & SI’s Pat Forde devote the entirety of today’s episode looking deeper into the key issues plaguing the world of college athletics at the moment.

Starting off with transfer rules, the gang looks to a recent interview by Kadyn Proctor. The offensive lineman spoke on transferring from Alabama to Iowa, where he noted that Iowa was supporting him throughout his freshman year playing for the Crimson Tide. Was this tampering on Iowa’s part? While a tampering rule is in writing in the NCAA bylaws, coaches and agents have been working around it for years. As the crew examines the solution to tampering, Dan challenges that tampering isn’t a problem outside of college athletics.

Meanwhile, there is an entirely separate can of worms in relation to the athlete/employee dichotomy. NCAA commissioner Charlie Baker has a new proposal, called “Project D1,” which is focused on beginning a conversation about legitimate athlete employment at the collegiate level. Whether it be collective bargaining or revenue sharing, Baker looks to hit the reset button. Ross breaks down the plan and how congress could address it, along with highlighting what the NCAA needs to do in order to get out of the transition with the least amount of damage.

To close out the podcast, The People’s Court examines a pickle-y trade proposal in a Buffalo Wild Wings & Doritos is involved in the alcohol world now.

1:00 - Did Iowa to Alabama transfer Kadyn Proctor engage in tampering?

33:17 - Charlie Baker’s “Project D1" and the future of athletes as employees

50:45 - The People’s Court: Pickle trade at the Buffalo Wild Wings?

57:40 - Would you eat it: Doritos alcohol edition

Ohio State building for a championship, LSU thriving in a post-Saban SEC & did Caitlin Clark flop?

1h 11m · Published 22 Jan 19:51

Dan Wetzel, Ross Dellenger & SI’s Pat Forde kick off the podcast with two football powerhouses loading up big time this offseason.

Ohio State can’t stop landing top talent this winter. After news broke last week that top portal safety Caleb Downs is transferring to Ohio State, the Buckeyes flipped top QB Julian Sayin from Alabama. Ohio State appears to be building up for a championship run next year and the fan expectations are starting to rise. Buying-in and utilizing NIL opportunities for high-impact players is looking like a strong strategy to try and win the new Big Ten.

Meanwhile, LSU is beginning to find their footing in the SEC again. The Tigers are landing more recruits from Louisiana now that Nick Saban isn’t at Alabama anymore. SEC recruiting has opened up since college football’s GOAT coach has retired and Brian Kelly is taking advantage.

Last week’s congressional hearing around college athletics has exposed the divide between the top football programs and the rest of college athletics. Top-tier college football has been recruiting players who see themselves as employees for years, while athletes from other sports have a differing viewpoint of their athletic status.

In women’s basketball news, after Ohio State beat Iowa in their latest matchup over the weekend, a fan made accidental contact with star player Caitlin Clark while storming the court. The podcast examines whether the contact was severe enough to warrant Clark losing her footing.

To close out the show, The People’s Court examines a sandwich thrown in a Florida Subway.

1:00 - Ohio State is building back up

20:35 - Julian Sayin has flipped from Alabama to Ohio State

40:14 - LSU is on fire recruiting

44:54 - Fallout from last week’s congressional NCAA hearing

56:19 - Did Caitlin Clark flop after making contact with a fan?

Alabama’s transfer portal woes, Ohio State finds a new AD & will Jim Harbaugh stay at Michigan?

1h 8m · Published 17 Jan 21:00

Dan Wetzel, Ross Dellenger & SI’s Pat Forde kick off the podcast examining where Jim Harbaugh could be coaching in 2024 after interesting language was found in his Michigan contract. The former 49ers head coach has already taken interviews with the Los Angeles Chargers and Atlanta Falcons. With a couple rules violations this past year, Harbaugh and his team are exploring all options including trying to get rid of a strict liability clause in his current contract.

Nick Saban’s retirement has snowballed into panic for the Alabama faithful. The Crimson Tide have seen over 20 players enter the transfer portal looking for a new home this offseason. One of the main drawbacks of losing a coach is losing players that he recruited as well.

In Big Ten news, Ohio State has hired Ross Bjork to be their next Athletic Director. This move reminds the guys of Bjork overseeing Hugh Freeze at Ole Miss and the deception that the two weaved while working together.

Toledo football head coach Jason Candle has been surrounded with buzz this offseason, the latest being from Ohio State. The trend of hiring Group of Five head coaches to a Power Five staff is starting to catch on more and more, with Alabama hiring two talented G5 coaches this offseason. The guys examine this trend and how it impacts the sport.

To close out the show, The People’s Court chimes in on the most expensive bottle of scotch sold.

1:00 - Jim Harbaugh: stay at Michigan or go to the NFL?

25:46 - Alabama is being cleaned out by the transfer portal

40:40 - Ohio State hires Ross Bjork as their new AD

51:05 - Will Ohio State hire Jason Candle from Toledo?

57:24 - College sports hits Capitol Hill again

Kalen DeBoer to Alabama, Jedd Fisch to Washington & Cam Ward flips from the NFL to Miami

1h 1m · Published 15 Jan 20:02

Dan Wetzel & SI’s Pat Forde break down the chain reaction that has taken place since Nick Saban announced his retirement from Alabama last week.

Washington’s Kalen DeBoer has accepted the Alabama head coach position a week after taking the Huskies to the National Championship. With big shoes to fill, the biggest question on everyone’s minds is whether or not Kalen deBoer can recruit in the SEC.

Washington filled their head coaching vacancy subsequently with Arizona head coach Jedd Fisch. Fisch helped turn Arizona into a 10-win program last year and is expected to bring some quick stability to Washington.

Ohio State has been returning a lot of veteran players this offseason. It appears that the Buckeyes want to approach the offseason like Michigan and Washington did this previous season.

In transfer portal news, former Washington State quarterback Cam Ward has decided to transfer to the University of Miami after declaring for the NFL draft. Pat and Dan were shocked to see this happen, but Mario Cristobal continues to prove that he is one of the best recruiters in the country right now. Meanwhile, UNLV’s Jayden Maiava has flipped from Georgia to USC. The Trojans were looking to find some QB depth after Malachi Nelson transferred out of the program to Boise State.

The NCAA is penalizing Florida State after deeming that a coach setting up a meeting between a recruit and a booster was not allowed. The podcast continues to be baffled by the selective punishment for matters that everyone partakes in, but FSU is still expected to be fined.

To close out the podcast, The People’s Court takes on a case of misleading advertising from a candy company.

1:00 - Kalen DeBoer is hired as the next Alabama head coach

24:27 - Jedd Fisch to take the Washington job

32:50 - Ohio State is building an older roster

39:03 - Cam Ward transfers to Miami

41:30 - Jayden Maiava flips from Georgia to USC

Nick Saban retires; a look at his legacy & what comes next for Alabama

1h 9m · Published 11 Jan 06:35

Dan Wetzel, Ross Dellenger & SI’s Pat Forde get together for an emergency podcast after news broke on Wednesday afternoon that after 17 seasons at Alabama, Nick Saban is retiring from coaching college football.

The guys take a look into the career of Nick Saban: his successes, his challenges, the way he evolved with the game and took on every challenger throughout the years. Even with the buzz of retirement starting this season, the decision still took many people by surprise. Dan, Ross & Pat also give their favorite anecdotes and run-ins with Saban over the years before discussing his successor.

The next head coach for Alabama will have big shoes to fill and an insatiable fanbase to take care of. The crew speculates who is in contention of being offered the job from Alabama, as well as who has the nerve to accept it. Many of the top candidates are enticing, but Alabama isn’t the only school that can win national championships anymore, as Monday night’s Michigan win proved.

To close out the show, the crew reacts to NCAA president Charlie Baker exonerating Michigan after the months-long sign-stealing saga.

CFP Championship Recap: Michigan outdoes Washington, defiantly caps off perfect season

55m · Published 09 Jan 12:11

The 2023 college football season is officially in the books, as Jim Harbaugh's Michigan Wolverines football team pounded the Washington Huskies 34-13 on Monday night in Houston, securing a perfect season and the program's first national championship since 1997.

Dan Wetzel, Ross Dellenger & SI's Pat Forde recap it all from the CFP media center in Houston. Two 40+ yard Donovan Edwards touchdowns put the Wolverines ahead 14-3 early, and while the Huskies cut the lead to seven on two different occasions, it just never felt like Washington's night as Michael Penix Jr. seemed off all night, clearly troubled by a rib injury.

The guys discuss Michigan's defiant win after a season of controversy, the future of Jim Harbaugh & JJ McCarthy, Pat's frustrations with Texas liquor laws & two Alabama men going viral for unfortunate incidents involving an oversized urn & a Bass Pro Shop.

CFP Championship: Michigan vs. Washington preview, JJ McCarthy opens up about sign stealing & should Will Howard transfer to Ohio State?

59m · Published 04 Jan 20:31

Dan Wetzel, Ross Dellenger & SI’s Pat Forde break down the upcoming College Football Playoff title between the Michigan Wolverines and Washington Huskies on Monday night in Houston.

Before the game picks and preview, Michigan’s quarterback JJ McCarthy spoke this week about the Michigan sign-stealing saga. McCarthy claimed that 80% of teams are stealing signs and that Michigan’s sign stealing endeavors were reactionary due to Ohio State. Also, Jim Harbaugh’s future is very unclear heading into the championship game. The guys make their predictions on whether or not this will be Harbaugh’s last game coaching Michigan.

Outside of Monday’s big game, former Kansas State quarterback Will Howard is visiting with Ohio State. The Buckeyes are in the market for a new quarterback after Kyle McCord left for Syracuse and Will Howard could provide some veteran experience. Meanwhile, nine players on Alabama’s team have entered the transfer portal following their loss to Michigan, so the podcast does a quick wellness check of the Crimson Tide.
