Art-Work

by Art-Work Podcast

After two years of supporting each other’s music projects to tour across Europe and the UK, Brea Robertson and Poppy Rose decided to work on a project they could do closer to home. Art-Work the podcast was born! Why Art-Work? We want to provide a platform for multi-disciplinary artists to share their work, their passion and their journey with a broader audience. We hope that people from all backgrounds will hear these stories and gain a deeper understanding into the minds, the life and the process of creative people from all over the world. We also want to shine a spotlight on independent artists who are not well known, to celebrate their stories and challenge the idea that to be successful in the arts, you need notoriety. So far, we have been amazed at the conversations we’ve had with artists from Canada, England, Germany, Australia, the USA, Norway and India. Stories of challenging social systems in India to pursue a passion, using the arts to fight political battles in Norway, discussing the art of balancing multiple projects as an artist, using music as a therapy in refugee camps across Europe and more. Every human has an incredible story, and we can’t wait to share some with you! Find us on Spotify, Google, Apple podcasts and Soundcloud.

The Power of Female Comicality

41m · Published 20 Oct 03:00
Ever heard of post-porn clowning? Soon it will become a household term when ABA NAIA take over the world with their incredible Berlin-based Latin-American-European performance collective! Today we had the honour of speaking with Teija and Jaika, two members of ABA NAIA. Since 2017, the collective have been exploring topics of sexuality with a comedic approach. With tools of post-porn clowning they question gender norms and its expectations, as well as the myths and stereotypes of femininity and desire. They say, “Our bodies, our sexuality and our vulnerability are our political weapons on stage. We battle the boundaries between cheerfulness and discomfort. We want to inspire and encourage our audience, to question their perceptions on freedom of self expression, sexuality, equality and pleasure.” All of this comes together in their post-porn clowning lecture performance, We Can Do It Moaning. In this episode, Teija and Jaika tell us about how practising things that make us feel awkward help to normalise it, how powerful comedy is when venturing into awkward or difficult topics of conversation, and how important vulnerability is when wanting to be funny...the clown helps us see a reflection of ourselves in our most vulnerable place. The Joys & Challenges of Being a Screen Actor

58m · Published 29 Sep 01:59
Ever wondered what it's like to be part of a huge Netflix show production? Our artist today is actor and singer Sam Otto, who plays John Osweiller in the hit Netflix dystopian drama, Snowpiercer. Sam studied at Drama School London, but left his course early to perform in Richard Wilson’s ‘Fracked!’ at Chichester Festival Theatre. He then secured the lead role in Peter Kosminsky’s explosive drama, ‘The State’, in which 4 young British citizens journey to Syria to join ISIS. The show went on to receive a BAFTA nomination in the miniseries category. In this episode we talk about finding your voice when working on a big studio tv production as a relative newcomer, maintaining a creative practice outside the ‘job’, how Sam is navigating how to make the most of his colour and race when auditioning for roles, without being defined by it... and so much more. We loved meeting Sam and felt really honoured at how candidly he shared with us about his acting journey. Follow Sam online... Celebrating the Messiness of the Artistic Process

56m · Published 25 Aug 02:00
Creating is not a perfect, linear journey; and today we talk all about embracing the mess in our process with Danish-born, Berlin-based movement artist, singer and musician, Kat Polar. As an artist and creator Kat's passion is to be what she creates, to observe and live inside of it. She also explores the discipline of resisting the "fast-pace" production that is all consuming in our capitalist world, especially when it comes to promoting and sharing your art as a polished and perfect product on social media. In this episode we talk about entering the flow state while creating, the balance between being an artist and having to exist in a capitalist world, how to be authentic on social media, and how as artists we have the power to create our own realities... including our definition of success. Balancing Parenthood and a Career in the Arts

1h 14m · Published 04 Aug 02:00
Can you be a parent AND start a career as an independent artist? YES. Our artist today is German singer-songwriter, producer, and father, Robert Horace. In 2018, Robert left his full time job as a chef to pursue his dream of being a musician. He dove into the deep end of releasing his first EP ‘Take Off’ while learning all about branding, performing, writing and adapting to life as an artist. It was also at that time that Robert and his girlfriend decided to have a baby. In this episode Robert candidly shares with us the joys and challenges of balancing life as a parent and an independent musician, the importance of building an authentic brand, and we talk about how we cannot "fail" being artists. Robert is the first parent we have talked to on the podcast, and we are so excited to share his story. For any artists considering having children, or for parents who are trying to balance their career and parenthood, we hope that Robert’s story encourages you and assures you that you’re not alone. Creating Ocean-Inspired Art with an Ethical Conscience

54m · Published 21 Jul 03:00
What's your main inspiration for your art? For Ellie, it's the ocean. Photographing the sea and its many moods has been her creative outlet since she was young. This flowed into the creation of her business, Island Ceramics, where she creates beautiful ceramic tableware pieces inspired by the tones and textures to be found around the coastline of Shetland, the most northerly islands in Scotland. In this episode we talk about how to get started in a creative business, the importance that nature has in our creative process, fully believing in the art that you are making, and how we can support artists who are committed to sustainability and protecting our Earth. How is Shakespeare Still Relevant in Today's Theatre?

1h 18m · Published 23 Jun 01:00
How can 450 year-old plays still have meaning in the theatre today? Charlie Dupré tells us how Shakespeare has hugely influenced his practice as a playwright, actor and spoken word artist. Charlie is from London, currently based in Berlin, and has taken multiple shows to Edinburgh Fringe Festival including 'The Stories of Shakey P' which re-imagined Shakespeare as a playground battle rapper, and 'Macblair' which told the story of Tony Blair as a Macbeth-style tragicomedy. It played the Brighton and Edinburgh Fringes to critical success, and Charlie tells us all about his experience taking his independent shows to these festivals and shares some amazing practical tips of things he’s learnt along the way. In the last couple of years Charlie has moved away from pursuing an acting career to discovering a love of playwriting. In this episode we talk about the importance of staying open to trying new things and how your path will reveal itself. We also talk about Charlie’s love of Shakespeare and reinventing his stories and plays with a current and topical twist, how theatre can be an amazing space to open discussion about politics and other important issues (especially in today’s polarised climate), and we also get a special performance of some excerpts from his plays and some wonderful spoken word! Dismantling Social Constructs Within Music Production

1h 10m · Published 09 Jun 01:00
Wow this episode is powerful stuff! We need more female*, trans and non-binary music producers, and Ivy is creating a beautiful safe space for people of marginalised genders to nurture and develop their skills with her collective, Éclat Crew Berlin. Ivy Rossiter, also known as Yvois, is an Aotearoa (New Zealand)-born, Berlin-based producer of warm, wonky beats and singer moody aural treats. Armed with a collection of dusty guitar pedals, warbling tape machines and a smattering of found sounds, she creates chill electronica and low key grooves in her treetop home studio. She is also the founder of Éclat Crew Berlin – a collective of female*, trans & non-binary electronic music producers. Éclat is French for an explosion of brilliance - and this project sure is! Ivy tells us all about Éclat, its purpose to provide a safe space for creating music, and how she secured funding for this amazing community venture. In this episode Ivy told us about the grieving process she went through when she let go of her past acoustic project, but how much joy her new path of electronic music has brought her. We also talk about the deeply rooted belief that many women have when it comes to music technology and the importance of creating a safe space for marginalised communities to create. 1st Birthday Special Q&A With Brea & Poppy

1h 12m · Published 26 May 01:00
The Art-Work Podcast is officially 1 year old! So we thought we'd celebrate with a fun, chatty, honest Q&A episode with your hosts, Brea & Poppy. We talked about things like... Where did the idea of starting the Art-Work podcast come from? How do you even start a podcast? How do you manage working with your best friend? How do you find the artists to talk to? What’s your favourite thing about being an artist? And so much more! We also feature some of the inspiring words of wisdom that our artists have shared in recent episodes as the sprinkles on top of the podcast birthday cake(and as a little reminder to go through our back catalogue and catch up on any conversations you've missed!) A huge huge thank you to all of the incredible artists we've had on the podcast over this past year. It's been a joy and a privilege to be able to share your stories and learn from your journey. Writing and Performing Important Stories

1h 21m · Published 19 May 01:00
Let's talk about telling important stories. Theo Toksvig Stewart is a dyslexic writer and actor who trained at the Drama Centre London, and he wrote his first play Endless Second during a particularly dry audition spell. Endless Second deals with consent within a relationship and it received multiple five-star reviews as well as being shortlisted for two awards at the 2019 Edinburgh Fringe. It was then commissioned as an audio adaptation which was transmitted on BBC Radio 4 in March 2021. Alongside developing television ideas, Theo has been commissioned for a number of theatre projects and was part of the BBC Writersroom Drama Room scheme and the Minack Playwrights Programme. We talked about so much in this episode: Theo reminds us that what we do does not inform our whole identity, how he’s managed to lay down boundaries between work and life, the importance of asking if you’re the right person to tell a story as a writer, and his experience of taking a show to Edinburgh Fringe. We’d never met Theo before, and by the end of the conversation we felt like we’d known him for years. He opened up about the challenges he’s experienced as an actor and writer and offered a lot of wisdom from the journey he’s taken. Before you listen to this episode, please be aware that we talk quite candidly about rape and consent because of Theo’s play, Endless Second. We just want to let you so that you can make the decision that protects you.
