Finding your voice and figuring out what you want to say with your art, takes time. This week's artist is Joey Ryan, aka ORIAN, who has evolved with his music over the years: from metal in his adolescence, to acoustic in his early twenties, to pure pop, and now finally finding a middle ground and finding his voice in the indie-alternative-atmospheric world. In this episode ORIAN talks about his journey of diversifying to build a sustainable career in music, finding strength in talking about the subjects that are important to him and the beauty of the little moments that make the hard work worthwhile. Check out ORIAN's new single, Grateful, here: https://orian.streamlink.to/Grateful Follow ORIAN on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/orian_musik/ Thank you so much for listening to this week's episode of Art-Work. How many times have you been told 'no'? How do you deal with rejection? How do you continue to pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and carry on? This week's artist - British dancer, teacher and choreographer, Katie Kelly - tells us how she does it, and how perseverance paid off. Katie has spent years travelling around Europe auditioning for dance companies, believing that that was the most sure way to secure a sustainable career in dance. Oftentimes, she would return home feeling dejected. Yet her passion for dance remained unwavered. After stepping back from dance work to give herself some time to rest, travel and explore other options at the start of this year, dance came back to her in an amazing opportunity to teach and choreograph full time at a vocational school in Freiburg, South Germany. In this episode we talk about overcoming rejection, not giving up, and the power of letting go. How can we tackle issues such as colourism and intergenerational conflict within communities? With theatre of course! This week's guest is director, playwright and theatre maker, Grace Edward. Grace has an incredible story; born in South Sudan, Grace left their homeland at 3 years old on their mother’s back. Grace’s family moved from place to place for a few years, including a refugee camp in Kenya, until they moved to Australia when Grace was 8 years old. They studied Applied Theatre alongside our host, Brea, and strongly believe in the power of storytelling as a tool to understand one another better. Through their creative projects, Grace explores different aspects of what it means to be a third-culture child and a person of colour, living in Australia today. They have co-written, produced and directed two theatre productions in Brisbane ‘Linking generations: A forum theatre play’ and ‘Skin Deep’ which explored the ideology of colourism within People of Colour Communities. Grace has spoken around Australia on a range of issues including youth leadership, education, health, intergenerational conflict, systemic racism, and displacement. Grace now draws from their life experience to create theatre that tells the real stories of people in their community. Be sure to follow Grace... Ever wondered about the pros and cons of being an independent artist vs. being signed to a major record label? This week's artist is singer-songwriter, Freddie Dickson, a good friend of ours, and a key part of Berlin independent music scene. A few years ago, Lily Allen discovered Freddie's music and he was signed to Columbia Records in London. After awhile, he realised the music he was making wasn't true to his sound and who he wanted to be, so they parted ways and Freddie started a new chapter in Berlin. In this episode, we discuss mental health, how Freddie would love his music to be listened to, and the differences he has experienced personally between being signed to a major label, and pursuing music independently. Check out all of Freddie's music: (and make sure to listen to it with good speakers/headphones in the dark after a few wines ;) ) Freddie Dickson: https://linktr.ee/freddiedickson Lucile: youtu.be/2R-AP0pv1q8 Mad Eye: youtu.be/vLYAujYgXKc Join the Art-Work Community Facebook Group to connect with other creatives, share your art, and continue the conversation about the joys and challenges of living an artistic life! https://www.facebook.com/groups/370788747316965 Thank you so much for listening to this week's episode of Art-Work. Have you heard the awful news about the fire in the Moria refugee camp? This week's episode is with Zainab Lax, a German harpist and community music therapist, who travels around Europe in her music van to NGOs and refugee camps. In this episode we talk about the incredible power music has to connect people without words, and Zainab tells us what it's like at refugee camps having worked there first hand. Europe is not taking responsibility for these humans who are forced to flee from their homes and live in terrible conditions, and Zainab shares her anger, disappointment and frustration with us. Her story and message are powerful ones, and this conversation needs to be heard and shared. If you want to help, visit https://homeforall.eu/ to find out more about what Home For All are doing for refugees and donate if you can. Check out more of Zainab's projects... Has the pandemic affected your creativity? Has it inspired you to adapt and try new things? This week's episode is with British singer/songwriter, Cara Hammond, who truly made the most of her time in lockdown staying with her parents in Wales earlier in the year. She hosted weekly open mics on Instagram Live, providing a platform for her fellow artists to perform, connect, and share audiences; she did weekly lunchtime live-streamed concerts from her living room; AND she wrote and self-produced an EP inspired by song idea suggestions from her audience! The 'twenty four hours' EP has now reached nearly 130,000 streams on Spotify, and Cara tells us all about her creative process and teaching herself a new skill during the COVID-19.
