Art-Work

by Art-Work Podcast

After two years of supporting each other’s music projects to tour across Europe and the UK, Brea Robertson and Poppy Rose decided to work on a project they could do closer to home. Art-Work the podcast was born! Why Art-Work? We want to provide a platform for multi-disciplinary artists to share their work, their passion and their journey with a broader audience. We hope that people from all backgrounds will hear these stories and gain a deeper understanding into the minds, the life and the process of creative people from all over the world. We also want to shine a spotlight on independent artists who are not well known, to celebrate their stories and challenge the idea that to be successful in the arts, you need notoriety. So far, we have been amazed at the conversations we’ve had with artists from Canada, England, Germany, Australia, the USA, Norway and India. Stories of challenging social systems in India to pursue a passion, using the arts to fight political battles in Norway, discussing the art of balancing multiple projects as an artist, using music as a therapy in refugee camps across Europe and more. Every human has an incredible story, and we can’t wait to share some with you! Find us on Spotify, Google, Apple podcasts and Soundcloud.

We're 10 conversations in to the Art-Work Podcast, so we thought this week we would pour ourselves a gin and tonic, sit down just us two (your hosts, Poppy and Brea) for a good old chat, reflect on what we've learnt so far, and ask each other some questions about life. Little disclaimer: this was the first episode we recorded in person together and we only used one microphone so some parts of the episode are a little bit quiet as Poppy speaks a bit softly; maybe listen on headphones or in a quite space this week. Apologies! We are still learning as we go when it comes to this podcasting malarkey! Thank you so much for listening to this week's episode of Art-Work. Making Theatre to Overcome Censorship in Cuba

1h 2m · Published 21 Jul 23:59
This week's episode is with Cuban theatre maker, Ricardo Sarmiento. At the moment Ricardo lives out of his suitcase, between Berlin and Havana, Cuba, where he was born. He is a theatre maker whose work deals with themes of identity, migration, and the relationship between art and activism. Resourceful Creativity to Make Award-Winning Short Films

52m · Published 15 Jul 00:00
Today’s episode is with Nick Vaky – a film director, writer and editor who grew up in Hawaii, studied in Boston, and now lives in Taiwan. In this cross continental interview, we discuss how to create a film without endless resources, how to fight through self-doubt and how chance encounters can sometimes be instrumental to our life’s journey. Nick has worked on so many exciting projects which we talk about in this episode. For instance, one of Nick’s short films, ‘Everything Rises’, was chosen to be featured at the Cannes Film Festival in 2020. He also worked on a project called ‘The World is your Ashtray’, where he documented the waste of cigarette butts, demonstrating how these seemingly insignificant pieces of litter are polluting the landscape of important locations. And he has recently started the YouTube channel ‘Mint Volcano’, where he and friends review and analyse Taiwanese cinema, sharing the love for Asian/Taiwanese films and TV shows with global audience.
