Art-Work

by Art-Work Podcast

After two years of supporting each other’s music projects to tour across Europe and the UK, Brea Robertson and Poppy Rose decided to work on a project they could do closer to home. Art-Work the podcast was born! Why Art-Work? We want to provide a platform for multi-disciplinary artists to share their work, their passion and their journey with a broader audience. We hope that people from all backgrounds will hear these stories and gain a deeper understanding into the minds, the life and the process of creative people from all over the world. We also want to shine a spotlight on independent artists who are not well known, to celebrate their stories and challenge the idea that to be successful in the arts, you need notoriety. So far, we have been amazed at the conversations we’ve had with artists from Canada, England, Germany, Australia, the USA, Norway and India. Stories of challenging social systems in India to pursue a passion, using the arts to fight political battles in Norway, discussing the art of balancing multiple projects as an artist, using music as a therapy in refugee camps across Europe and more. Every human has an incredible story, and we can’t wait to share some with you! Find us on Spotify, Google, Apple podcasts and Soundcloud.

48m · Published 24 Feb 02:00
Have you ever thought about doing an artist residency? Or wondered what even is an artist residency? Well look no further than this week’s episode of the podcast! Lisa Stewart, a multidisciplinary artist from Australia, who works across sound, video, installation, collage, performance, and energetic or somatic live art experiences. Lisa’s art has taken her all over the world, and she’s spent a lot of time participating in artist’s residencies. In this episode Lisa explains what an artist residency is and how they work. She gives us some insight in the day to day experience a residency might offer, as well as giving us some information on where to find out about them. Lisa shares also with us the challenges and the benefits that come with working in so many different art forms, how she is learning to break down the barriers between art, life and self, and how important it is to be present in your body and your location to create authentic artwork. Cruise Ships, Rebranding, & Finding a Healthy Balance

1h 9m · Published 10 Feb 02:00
Ever thought about performing on cruise ships? Or felt like you want to rebrand your art project but are too scared? Or like you need better boundaries in place for a healthier art-work-life balance? This week we had an AMAZING conversation about all of those things and more with Indie-Pop Duo, Bitter Trick; Aka, Katherine and Marcus. They tell us about the time they spent performing commercially on Brittany Ferries and in a hotel in Thailand, offering some practical ideas and insight for artists wanting to work on commercial cruises or in hotels around the world. While working abroad, Katherine and Marcus had the opportunity to reflect on the music they wanted to create resulting in a complete rebrand. Their new project Bitter Trick is an indie-pop duo and they've just released their latest single ‘Say No’, about having the strength to stick up for what you believe in. Their new EP Climb is coming soon! In this episode we talk about recognising and embracing our core values; honing professional persistence and consistency, Katherine and Marcus’ perspective on re-branding themselves in a way that feels more honest and developing a healthy work-life balance... especially when your creative project partner is also your life partner! Creating & Televising a Comedy Animation

54m · Published 03 Feb 01:00
Ever wondered how a show makes it on to the TV? Our artists today are Australian animators Mark Nicholson and Sebastian Peart, founders of Stepmates and creators of the Australian TV Show 'Regular Old Bogan'. At its core, Stepmates is the combined devotion of Mark and Seb to “Make Australia Funny Again” with animated satire that dances on the line of what constitutes taboo in the current political climate. They have rapidly captured the attention of audiences with their uniquely Australian sense of humour and the ability to condense an oftentimes critically overthought topic to a key statement. In 2019, the Seven Network, a national Australian TV network, commissioned Stepmates to produce the first series of Regular Old Bogan which hit Australian screens in August 2020... and most things are still held together with duct tape! In this episode we talk about persisting through disappointing times, how to pitch a show to a TV network, staying true to your brand and ideas, and the magic that can happen when artists take action. (Just to warn you, this episode contains some strong language.) Follow Stepmates... 1h 1m · Published 27 Jan 03:00
Ever walked past a street performer and wondered how they got there? Or wondered what's it like taking your performance to the public trying to capture the attention of the people walking by? Today's episode is with the renowned Berlin street performer, Alice Hills. Alice started her musical journey performing on the rough, competitive streets of Berlin when she was only 16. Over the years, busking has shaped her music style, her performance and her voice, and even now (over a decade on), performing on city streets all over the world has been her main source of income. In this episode, she shares some really practical ideas and advice for anyone wanting to try street performing, how she is motivated by the beautiful connections sharing her music allows her to make with passers by and how she’s managed to create her own path in the music industry. Trading to Build a Stronger Creative Community

1h 7m · Published 02 Dec 01:00
Have you ever thought about trading with other artists instead of just using money? Today's guest is Tessa Robertson, (Brea's sister!) an absolutely incredible woman, ceramicist, creative, artist, and free-spirt here to inspire us all in so many ways. Tessa’s creativity derives from her experiences in nature, and her interest in ceramics was sparked in the height of COVID-19, when her area went into isolation. What began as a hobby, has now grown into something much more...her online Instagram business The Forest Floor. But Tessa doesn’t limit herself to ceramics. In this episode she talks about her love for expressing herself creatively through many mediums and her openness to learning and trying new things that bring her joy. She talks about her passion for trading and collaborating with other artists to build a stronger creative community and how an encounter with a bear in Canada inspired the name and ethos of her brand.
