Art-Work

by Art-Work Podcast

After two years of supporting each other’s music projects to tour across Europe and the UK, Brea Robertson and Poppy Rose decided to work on a project they could do closer to home. Art-Work the podcast was born! Why Art-Work? We want to provide a platform for multi-disciplinary artists to share their work, their passion and their journey with a broader audience. We hope that people from all backgrounds will hear these stories and gain a deeper understanding into the minds, the life and the process of creative people from all over the world. We also want to shine a spotlight on independent artists who are not well known, to celebrate their stories and challenge the idea that to be successful in the arts, you need notoriety. So far, we have been amazed at the conversations we’ve had with artists from Canada, England, Germany, Australia, the USA, Norway and India. Stories of challenging social systems in India to pursue a passion, using the arts to fight political battles in Norway, discussing the art of balancing multiple projects as an artist, using music as a therapy in refugee camps across Europe and more. Every human has an incredible story, and we can’t wait to share some with you! Find us on Spotify, Google, Apple podcasts and Soundcloud.

1h 21m · Published 12 May 00:00
Let's talk about networking... or how about, building strong friendships with individual people beyond their job title? That's what Maanuni is all about. Our artist today, Maanuni, is an Indian singer-songwriter, voice artist, and vocal coach. Her passion for music has paved the way to a successful career full of diversity. She has worked on the background scores of multiple Bollywood Movies and a Disney+ web series, collaborated with recording artists from many genres to release music, and is getting ready to release her very own music soon. Maanuni is also a passionate vocal coach who loves to share her knowledge with her students... she’s had over 100 of them! In this episode, Maanuni shares with us the importance of authentic networking and building friendships instead of ‘contacts’ in the music industry, the lessons she’s learned about taking care of her mental health, and she helps us reframe our outlook on “competition” from jealousy to celebration, appreciation and gratitude. We also heard about how the pandemic has affected Maanuni and her family, and the reality of what it’s like living in India during this unfathomable time, especially from an independent artist’s perspective. Maanuni is truly an incredibly wise woman and artist. We LOVED this conversation and we know you will too. Celebrating Feminine Empowerment Through Burlesque

53m · Published 14 Apr 01:00
Could you leave a stable job to follow your heart and pursue your artistic passions? Do you embrace your body and your beautiful feminine energy - regardless of your gender? This week we talk about all this and more with the incredible multifaceted artist, Eléonore Clemente. Eléonore is a French singer-songwriter, massage-therapist and Burlesque performer who one year ago quit her well-paid and stable job in the famous music software company, Ableton, to pursue her artistic passions. In this episode we talk about the dilemma artists often face when juggling more than one passion or project... should I just choose ONE? Sometimes we need one to give us energy for the other; one to feed our souls, one to serve others, and so on. We also talk about how empowering burlesque dancing has been for Eléonore by encouraging her to celebrate her beauty and her body in a safe space. This episode really felt like a celebration of following your dreams, embracing who you are and learning to speak your truth. We absolutely loved it! Follow Eléonore's journey... Knowing Your 'Why'

45m · Published 31 Mar 01:00
Are you super clear on why you are creating your art? In this episode we talk with faith-based RnB singer-songwriter Asha Elia about defining your why, and holding onto those reasons when you feel disillusioned by the industry, the importance of surrounding yourself with a like-minded supportive community, Asha’s experience of being a part of two worlds... the music industry and the Christian community, and how the artist’s journey is always a step by step process. After finding a faith in Christianity while studying accounting, Asha Elia struggled to find the uplifting type of RnB music she wanted to listen to. So... she resolved to write it herself! With no musical background or prior intentions of becoming a musician, Asha’s desire to create empowering music has taken her on a journey she never expected. She now has over 40,000 monthly listeners on Spotify and her songs have been listened to well over 1,000,000 times. Challenging the Culture of Toxic Masculinity in the Music Industry

1h 10m · Published 24 Mar 02:00
Let's talk about toxic masculinity in the music industry. This week we spoke to Oh Papa, a Sheffield-based 4 piece band, made up of Jack, Ric, Felix and Phil, who blend together facets of Americana, soft rock, subtle surf and indie in their music. Striving to change the perception of what it means to be an indie band from Yorkshire and dispel the toxic masculinity that has been prevalent in the indie rock scene, the members of Oh Papa actively take steps to challenge the culture they see around them. In this episode we talk with lead singer, Jack, and drummer, Felix, about finding a balanced dynamic within a group creative project, addressing inclusivity within the music industry, dismantling ideas of toxicity and competition, and the importance of looking after your mental health when we are so often told to work harder. The pair also give us a glimpse into the hilarious world of Oh Papa including their three WhatsApp groups for positive, negative and business talk. It’s a great conversation with lots of inspiring insights from two seasoned musicians. Follow Oh Papa & listen to their music... Challenging the Status Quo Through Films & Video Art

44m · Published 17 Mar 01:00
Our artist this week is Diana Galminzyanova, a film maker and video artist based in Moscow, Russia. Her award-winning short films have been accepted to more than 70 festivals in 20 countries, and her art pieces have been a part of group exhibitions all over the world. Her award-winning debut feature film, The Lightest Darkness, was the first ever female-directed Russian film noir. She is now working on her next project, a horror-comedy called Murder Girl, which she tells us all about in the episode. Diana blew us away with her perspective on how art can challenge the status quo, the importance of women supporting women, and how she uses her artistry to share the voices of those who don’t always have that power themselves. We found Diana and her art through Instagram and it was so incredible that although the three of us had never met and were all in and we’re all from different countries, we each felt such a strong connection throughout this conversation. It was amazing to hear from a fellow female creative that she is passionate about similar things as we are. We hope that this episode is a huge encouragement to you that there are people all over the world doing what they can to make a positive difference through art. Following Your Gut & Letting Go of Expectation

52m · Published 03 Mar 01:00
Have your dreams and goals shifted and evolved since the start of the pandemic? Are you feeling called to change lanes or change direction completely, but feeling a pressure that you HAVE to finish what you set out to do? In this episode we talk with Greek-Australian Actor & Creator, Bianca Zouppas, about redefining success, the importance of following your gut instinct, and letting go of expectation. Acting for stage and screen has been, and continues to be Bianca’s passion. She spent her time between Australia and the US, but since the interference of COVID and having her time during pilot season in LA cut short, Bianca decided to return to Brisbane to pursue her first love of theatre once again. As well as performing, Bianca’s passion for fostering supportive and sincere connections between people in the creative industry led her to create CALI - Creative Artistic Ladies Incorporated - which she has been running since 2018. CALI is a place for creatives to come together and flex their creative muscles in an array of hands-on workshops. Bianca also coaches young people, who inspire her and keep the passion for performing alive. In this episode, Bianca tells us what pilot season in LA is like, and the necessity of asking yourself what really makes you happy and allowing your goals to shift and change as you grow. We also talk about redefining success, the joys of creating your own project, and the importance of supporting other women.
