Episode 30 - ATS - Letting Go of Bad Habits

25m · Published 20 Feb 11:00

Today, our ladies Lisa Carpenter, Transformational Life and Nutrition Coach, along with Lisa Sharp, Empowerment Coach and Clutter Expert, and Jen Turrell, Financial Personal Trainer for Women, share their thoughts on letting go of old habits and the discomfort of creating new ones.

Lisa Carpenter, at the time of recording, was in the final stages of planning her Masterclass.   During past launches, she had used anxiety as the fuel to get her through the planning, which was always at the last minute and on the fly.  Needless to say this was extremely stressful, and she felt as though she had been swallowed whole by the end of it.

She has had to change her approach, and now plans ahead and comes from a place of ease.  The temptation to stray from the task at hand to check out Facebook, respond to a text, or whatever other “itch” is calling her, is a very real challenge. Putting her phone in another room, and clearing her calendar has allowed her to give herself the space she needs to do what she needs to do, in a timely fashion.

Lisa Sharp, a notorious self-proclaimed procrastinator, shares that her last minute mentality is in fact a protection mechanism that she uses to not hold herself accountable for the success of her endeavors, because she puts things together at the last minute.   Even though it is uncomfortable, it is the known variable, and her default.

She shares that focussing on one thing at a time, and staying the course, allows you to accomplish so much more.  She suggests using timers to keep on track and recommends them all the time to her clients.

In the throes of writing her first novel, Jen Turrell is also very familiar with the issue of time wasting, and distraction from the task at hand.  Writing is a long term endeavor that doesn’t have an immediate return on time invested, so being conscious of time management is very important.

For her, social media can be a total waste of time.  On the other hand, she also finds it to be very useful both to spread her message, learn about the goings on in the country and around the world that interest her.    She has the 90 day year planner, and it really has helped her stay on track.  She uses 15 minute increments to stay on task with a timer as well and has found she is much more productive that way.  Having a daily theme is also helpful - i.e. Monday is planning day, Tuesday is Podcast/Promo day, Wednesday is Writing day etc.

Closing thought…

“Stay in the room, both literally and figuratively until you have done what you said you were going to do.”

The “All the Stuff” gals invite listeners to join in the conversation in their Facebook Group, to share about their own struggles and wins dealing with bad habits.

Episode 29 - ATS - Diet Fads

37m · Published 13 Feb 11:00

Today the “All the Stuff” gals Jen Turrell, Financial Personal Trainer for Women, Lisa Carpenter, Transformational Life and Nutrition Coach, and Lisa Sharp, Empowerment Coach and Clutter Expert, discuss Diet Fads, and how they don’t work.

Over the years, the diet industry has rolled out all sorts of fads for weight loss, like low carb, low fat, gluten free, lactose free to name a few.  These seemingly quick-fix solutions end up being unsustainable, and often extremely unhealthy.  After all, as Lisa Carpenter mentions, both cocaine and broken glass are gluten free, but would you eat them?

Listeners will hear how learning the basics, and making choices that support how you want to feel is the key to healthy weight loss and a healthy body. In fact, we can get so used to feeling poorly, that when we do start feeding our bodies properly, the change is remarkable.

In a world where food packaging is riddled with marketing schemes, it is very important to read labels and understand what you are eating. Eating whole foods is truly the best way to care for your body, and helps combat digestive issues that are so often aggravated by refined processed foods.

Episode 28 - ATS - Willpower vs Systems

32m · Published 06 Feb 13:43

Today the “All the Stuff” gals Jen Turrell, Financial Personal Trainer for Women, Lisa Carpenter, Transformational Life and Nutrition Coach, and Lisa Sharp, Empowerment Coach and Clutter Expert, share about Willpower vs Systems, and how one can fail you and the other can save you.

When it comes to nutrition, in particular losing weight, using willpower without a system is a sure way to fail.  Systems like food logging, food prep and support groups are much more effective in keeping us conscious and doing the things we need to do to achieve our goals.  Willpower comes into play when you need momentary strength to resist things like cravings, but it cannot be the only tool you use as it is very volatile, and greatly drops off when exhaustion and boredom set in.

Systems help take the decision making out of the process.  Having too many choices, while exciting, makes things more difficult to manage, and leads to temptation.  Planning meals, purchases and finances in advance takes the element of choice out of it, and helps to keep us on track.

Listeners will learn how doing the things you don’t want to do and doing them first, helps remove the stress, and even though they can be uncomfortable, they usually don’t take much time, and have huge benefits.  Are you doing what you say you are going to do?  Systems can help!

Be sure to come on over the the “All the Stuff” Facebook Group and share what you do in terms of systems and willpower in your own life.

Episode 27 - ATS - How to Celebrate Yourself

34m · Published 30 Jan 12:57

Today the “All the Stuff” gals Jen Turrell, Financial Personal Trainer for Women, Lisa Carpenter, Transformational Life and Nutrition Coach, and Lisa Sharp, Empowerment Coach and Clutter Expert, share about the importance and celebrating yourself.

When we take initiative to follow our intentions, and honour our “whys”, we need to stop and celebrate!  Sharing our wins, even when thing are not perfect, is necessary to remind ourselves of the progress that we do make, and give ourselves permission to say “I did awesome!”.

People routinely avoid sharing their wins in fear of appearing egotistical or bragging.  As such, they have created these negative stories around allowing themselves to celebrate, and judge those that do so for themselves.   This behaviour whittles away at our self-worth, and keeps us in a small place full of self-deprecating behaviour.

Listeners will learn how in fact we all do need self-approval and support, and it is a skill that needs to be cultivated.  When we celebrate ourselves which is a form of self-love, we soften our attitude towards ourselves and others as well.  It isn’t easy to do, and requires keeping these thoughts top of mind.  It also requires being able to receive, which is especially hard for women.

Lisa Carpenter offers this tip:  Write a list of 20 things to celebrate about yourself.  If can be about anything that made you happy.   Carry this list with you to refer back to when you are having a rough day.  Another great tip is at the end of the day, write down three things that happened to you every day.   Or better yet, plan to do three things every day that you can celebrate.  It will change your life!  Our gals share three of their own personal wins which you won’t want to miss!

Episode 26 - ATS - How to Recalibrate after the Holidays

42m · Published 23 Jan 13:47

After the flurry of activities and overindulgences of the holidays, we usually greet the new year with an abundance of motivation to make the new year the best ever.  However, so often, a few weeks into the new year, we lose that motivation, and give into old habits and behaviours that don’t lead us towards our “whys”.  This leads us to believe that we have to “start over”...

Today the “All the Stuff” gals Lisa Carpenter, Transformational Life and Nutrition Coach, along with Lisa Sharp, Empowerment Coach and Clutter Expert, and Jen Turrell, Financial Personal Trainer for Women, discuss this common behaviour.  Lisa Carpenter offers the perspective that no one really starts over - you start from the place where you left off.  And losing the judgement is something that is imperative as it does not serve anyone to dwell on something that has passed.  Nor does it serve to bash yourself around in shame for overspending, overeating, or over-cluttering…  Instead, focus on your “whys”, and move towards them and how you want to feel.

So if things get out of control, and you start feeling less than stellar, you have to be willing to go through the “detox” symptoms, to get through it and feel better.  Lisa Sharp discusses how having a plan to deal with the eventual discomfort will really help get through the transition towards your self-care.

Listeners will also hear how having people around you with common goals helps keep you on track.  Jen Turrell shared how the circle she shares with Lisa Sharp and Lisa Carpenter help her keep her goals of simplicity front and center, and in so doing, found her holidays were quite peaceful and relaxed.

Listeners are encouraged to share their own tips and challenges for the new year in the  “All the Stuff” Facebook Group so head on over and join in the conversation at https://www.facebook.com/groups/allthestuffpodcast/!

Episode 25 - ATS - What’s Your Numbers Story?

28m · Published 16 Jan 14:36

Today, Lisa Carpenter, Transformational Life and Nutrition Coach, along with Lisa Sharp, Empowerment Coach and Clutter Expert, and Jen Turrell, Financial Personal Trainer for Women, discuss how past stories surrounding numbers have affected each of them in their belief systems, and what the repercussions have been in their lives.

Like most of us have had or still have in one particular area or another, Lisa C. has had “stories” since childhood regarding her lack of understanding of numbers.  She shares how a recent retreat and workshop on numbers using spreadsheets brought her a great deal of discomfort, and how staying with it helped her discover the unexpected truths that lay beyond her fears, in particular, regarding her business finances, and came out of it with a new confidence and awareness of where she is and wants to be. Both Jen and Lisa S. also share their thoughts and ideas, in this “something for everyone” episode.

When one is fearful of something, be it numbers or otherwise, it usually means that there is a lack of confidence and knowledge combined with limiting beliefs which can inevitably lead to avoidance.   The “All the Stuff” gals invite listeners to join in the conversation in their Facebook Group, to share about what makes them uncomfortable, and offer support to work through what they are avoiding.

Episode 22 - ATS - Purging Post Christmas

26m · Published 26 Dec 11:00

Today the “All the Stuff” gals Lisa Carpenter, Transformational Life and Nutrition Coach, along with Lisa Sharp, Empowerment Coach and Clutter Expert, and Jen Turrell, Financial Personal Trainer for Women, discuss the post Christmas excesses and how to handle them without guilt.

Lisa Carpenter:

  1. Excess food can trigger overeating and cravings.  Remove excesses as quickly as possible by sending it home with your guests, freeze leftovers, donating, or throwing it away.
  2. Avoiding making too much food, only what you need.

Jen Turrell:

  1. Use gift cards on sales after the holidays for things you really want and use or cash them in.
  2. If you receive a new electronic that is replacing another older one, there are places that will accept old items for recycling.
  3. There are shelters that will accept wiped phones for women that are victims of domestic violence.
  4. Be vigilant with charges on credit and pay them off as quickly as possible.

Lisa Sharp:

  1. Don’t hang on to gifts that you don’t need, use or like out of guilt.   It’s ok to let them go.  It is the sentiment that matters, not the item itself.
  2. You can return it, exchange it, re-gift it, or give to charity.
  3. Remember, just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.

Listeners are encouraged to join in the conversation in the “All the Stuff” Facebook Group, to share their own post holiday clean up and purge.    Also, check out Lisa Carpenter’s signature program E.A.T. that opens today!
