51 When To Do The Work and How To Stop "Should-ing" All Over Yourself

23m · Published 21 Feb 12:00

Hey friend!

First, I discuss how compartmentalizing can be helpful and hurtful. I understand that it can be difficult to open up Pandora's box but I am challenging you to look at why you are avoiding it. I talk about different things that can be helpful while navigating this thing called life. Compartmentalizing is a trauma response and survival technique we use to protect ourselves when things feel overwhelming. There are times when we have the capacity to process and other times we do not.  I am also tackling the topic of how we “should” all over ourselves. How often do you put high expectations on yourself with “shoulds”. Maybe to go to the gym? To clean the house? To get a project done? To write that paper? It is important to understand the impact that “shoulding” will have on your internal environment. Stay tuned for the entire episode for helpful tips.

49 The Body Keep Score: Why Physical Symptoms Manifest When We Hold Onto Trauma

31m · Published 07 Feb 12:00

Hey friends!

Today on the show, I am talking about a topic that I continue to learn about but that is also near to the heart. I discuss the following:

  • My own healing through EMDR.
  • Body takes on stress and remembers it even if you don’t consciously know that it is happening
  • Simple things can throw you into a spiral
  • Dis-ease: Finding the root cause
  • Changing the signals that are affecting the cells

The poly vagal theory talks all about nervous system regulation. It explores how our thoughts influence our healing. If we have limiting beliefs such as “I can't do this”,  “Good things never happen for me”, “I will never be that successful” “I will never walk again” “I live in constant pain” ect then these thoughts re-enforce that pathway making it stronger.

In order to heal the body, you must recognize and release it.

47 How Recovery From Addiction Built My Confidence

25m · Published 24 Jan 11:58

Hey Hey!!

How was addiction was the catalyst to my confidence??

I don’t speak about my recovery often enough. I'm not sure why but my guess is because I burned out in the field of chemical dependency and have been focusing on other areas to help people grow. I have grown as well. I haven't necessarily grown away from my recovery but I have grown within it.  I find it important to re-visit the roots of why I am here to day and who I am today because of those roots.

These are some of the milestones and moments that catapulted self-confidence:

  • Trying new things and discovering I liked them
  • Facing hard situations without drugs
  • Walking through shame and confronting it
  • Being vulnerable with positive outcomes
  • Advocacy for self in the face of adversity

Please share your recovery story !! You can schedule to be on the show! Recovery from addiction, food, trauma, or whatever journey you are on right now :)

46 Anxiety, Relationships & Attachment Styles with Erika Straub

37m · Published 17 Jan 12:25

Hey friends!!

I am joined by Erika Straub today for a little chat about attachment styles. She is a relationship coach. She has her bachelors in psychology with a Masters in Depth Psychology.

She touches on her own story which is what led her into doing this work with others. She recognized how her own attachment styles were impacting her romantic relationships. We dive into the four attachment styles which are formed based on environment, relationship and trauma in our life. The nervous system remembers these experiences which translate into our lives now. Erika emphasizes how these patterns can be altered and changed so you can live a freer life that isn’t bogged down by childhood trauma.

44. Why Perfectionism Keeps You From Your Confidence

26m · Published 03 Jan 12:34

Hey friends!

What would your definition of perfectionism be? How does striving for perfectionism keep you from achieving your goals? What happens when you aren’t perfect?

Many of these concepts I have talked about on the show before. All arrows point to perfectionism. We fear others seeing us as unworthy so we compensate by trying to be the best at what we do to mask our character defects.

  • Fear of failure.
  • Fear of making mistakes. will no longer be accepted. Trying to be perfect is a way of trying to protect themselves from criticism, rejection, and disapproval.
  • All-or-none thinking.
  • Overemphasis on “shoulds”
  • Comparison to others

Perfectionism leads us down a nasty bumpy road filled with potholes, detours and bad weather. You can have goals without expectations which will lead to more positive outcomes and overall improved self-esteem.

42 What Is Overthinking??

14m · Published 20 Dec 11:59

Hey podcast friends!

Overthinking leads to increased feelings of anxiety, perfectionism, obsession, fixation, and feelings of unworthiness. It leads to unhelpful thoughts and emotions much like a rocking chair. It gives us something to do but doesn't get us anywhere. When we overthink, it is our attempt to control a situation to help ease our anxiety but ultimately it increases it.

The cycle of overthinking:

1. Interaction with someone

2. Ruminate about that interaction

3. Feelings of guilt and shame

4. Impact on your persona life: disconnect from others, increase depression, short-tempered, isolated, and other symptoms

There are ways to manage excessive thoughts and obsessions. The first step is awareness of the thoughts. The next step is acceptance vs. wishing it away. When we try to wish it away, we will only become more frustrated. Stayed tuned for the end because I recommend a few grounding skills that can help when these thoughts become too much.
