A Revisit to: Ask Coach Debbi - Carbs: the Good, the Bad and the Ugly | Ep 127

12m · Published 16 Aug 06:00

This week we revisit a popular episode from before the name changed from Chats with Coach Debbi to From Willingness to Wellness.

I address a question from our Facebook CHAT GROUP that was asked by Theresa. She wants to know about carbs, the good, the bad and the ugly.

At the top of the CHAT GROUP you'll find a pinned post titles, Whatch Wanna Hear? Community members can ask questions that I may address in future episodes. Feel free to join and ask your question in the comments of that post.

In today's episode I explain what carbs are, how our body uses them and the truth about their benefits (or harm).

Some of what I cover...

  • The Good
    • Carbs are a class of nutrient
    • Our bodies need carbs for energy
    • Carbs are made of sugar, starch and fiber
  • The Bad
    • Carbs get a bad rap
    • Carbs are not created equal
    • Simple vs Complex carbohydrates
    • Consuming carbs in weight loss
  • The Ugly
    • The ugly truth about carbs, they aren't ugly at all
    • Good carbs vs bad carbs
    • Consider the source

I also share about studies that prove that when it comes to blood sugar and insulin spikes, it's not just carbohydrates that need to be considered. Animal proteins and fats have shown to cause insulin spikes.

For more information to assist in your own research, I recommend Dr Michael Greger's website, nutritionfacts.org and his book, How Not to Die.
