Episode 117:Social Media & Anxiety

49m · Published 14 Apr 14:04
Welcome to "The Influence of Social Media on Anxiety," hosted by Aryan Gagan and Nick Jancev. In today's episode, we will dive deep into the ways in which cyberbullying and online harassment on social media platforms can contribute to feelings of anxiety. Social media has become an integral part of our lives, offering us a platform to connect, express ourselves, and share our experiences. However, it is important to acknowledge that this digital landscape is not immune to negative aspects, such as cyberbullying and online harassment. When individuals are targeted by cyberbullies or experience online harassment, it can have a profound impact on their mental well-being. The fear of judgment and humiliation stemming from hurtful comments, insults, and threats can erode their self-esteem and confidence, leading to increased anxiety about how they are perceived by others. Unlike traditional forms of bullying, cyberbullying can persist around the clock. The accessibility of social media platforms means that individuals can be subjected to harassment at any time and from anywhere, creating a sense of helplessness and making it difficult to find respite. This constant exposure to negativity can intensify feelings of anxiety and contribute to a cycle of distress. Furthermore, cyberbullying often involves public humiliation and exclusion from online communities. This can result in social isolation, as individuals may fear engaging with others online due to the potential for further harassment. The resulting loneliness and disconnection can further exacerbate anxiety levels. In addition, cyberbullying can lead to negative self-comparisons. Constant exposure to others' seemingly more positive online presence or receiving more positive attention can foster feelings of inadequacy and increase anxiety. This distorted self-perception can have a detrimental effect on one's mental well-being. Moreover, individuals who have experienced cyberbullying may develop a constant state of cyber-vigilance and hypervigilance. They may find themselves constantly monitoring their online activities, posts, and interactions, trying to prevent further harassment. This hyper-awareness can take a toll on their mental health and contribute to heightened anxiety levels. It is crucial to recognize the impact of cyberbullying and online harassment on mental well-being and take proactive steps to address and prevent such behavior on social media platforms. By fostering a culture of respect, empathy, and support online, we can create a safer and more inclusive digital environment for all. Join us as we explore this important topic and discuss strategies for promoting positive mental health in the age of social media.
