Episode 35: What Live Music Means with Dr. Leah Taylor & Taraleigh Weathers

53m · Published 24 Dec 12:00

In this three-part series, Taraleigh and Leah ask live music fans, musicians, and people in the industry questions about what live music means to them, how it affects their mental health, and to share a recent memorable experience with live music. In this episode, they dive into the question “What does live music mean to you?” First, we hear from live music fans about the importance that it holds in their lives and why they make it a priority to attend live music. Then we hear from musicians such as Ryan Dempsey from Twiddle, Eric Gould from Pink Talking Fish and Marble Eyes, Jeremy Kaplin and Brian Murray from Dogs in a Pile, and Brett Wilson from Roots of Creation, along with others making the live music happen. Taraleigh and Leah explore themes that come up such as feeling a sense of community, a sense of harmony and positive feels, and that live music is essential to one’s survival in the same way as food, water, air, and sex. Whether you have explored this question yourself, are pondering it for the first time, or are curious why your friend, daughter, son, cousin, etc. is off to see the same band for the hundredth time, this episode is a great overview of what makes live music so meaningful and why it has been a part of every culture since the beginning of recorded time.

Episode 34: Master of the Universe with Nat Keefe

1h 11m · Published 10 Dec 12:00

Taraleigh and Leah chat with guitarist, producer, and master of beats Nat Keefe. Nat shares all the ways he is bringing live music to the people including being an original member of Hot Buttered Rum, his new electronic project BeatMower, intimate acoustic gigs strengthened by the pandemic, and as a producer of other creators’ music. In addition, Nat talks about his travels documenting West African dances for the Awudome tribe in Ghana and collaborating and recording with Zambian and Rwandan musicians in early 2020 which he mixes for his Beatmower sets. Nat discusses how the social context plays a role in the live music experience and how all of these creative pursuits keep him firing on all cylinders. The three also discuss similarities in music and dance across cultures and what we can learn from traditional communities like the Awudome. Not to be missed is Nat’s take on what makes a “hot show” and how everyone’s participation is a part of that. For the “Did you Know,” Leah shares her thoughts and passion for live music participation for all involved, including fans, and Taraleigh offers an opportunity to notice what happens when you bring yourself fully to the experience in the “Daily Jam.”

You can access the Awudome traditional dances that Nat discusses in the interview here: https://youtu.be/kAA_3t4xSdE

Nat Keefe is known for bringing both joy and solace to the many thousands of people in his audience. In 1999 he co-founded the bluegrass bandHot Buttered Rumwith Erik Yates, a friend he’d met three years prior when they were sophomores in college. Over the last twenty years they’ve lit up some of the best festival stages in the world, includingTelluride Bluegrass, Newport Folk, Bonnaroo, Strawberry, Hardly Strictly, and High Sierra, though Nat will admit a personal highlight was performing the National Anthem before aSF Giants playoff game.To the delight of their fans, Hot Buttered Rum continues to write, record, and tour. Their latest album, “Something Beautiful,” was released in April of 2020.

In February 2020 Nat traveled with Hot Buttered Rum to Rwanda and Zambia. Nat’s community rallied behind him and raised $7000 for a new recording studio rig. He recorded several musicians in both countries, and these sounds comprise much of Nat’s DJ dance music project, BeatMower.A BeatMower set is a mix of original sounds recorded inCalifornia, Rwanda, Zambia & Ghana,mixer- and laptop-controlled samples and loops, and vinyl turntable tracks, along with occasional musical guests who weave their own collaborative improvisations. Some like to call this original and provocative upbeat dance mix “Afrograss.”

In addition, Nat has produced two-dozen records for other artists, includingKyle Ledson, Fruition, The She’s, and many others. For Nat, producing – helping people refine and create their vision – is equally as important as performing.

Episode 32: Embracing Magic in the Other with Ezra Lipp

1h 3m · Published 12 Nov 12:00

Taraleigh and Leah talk with drummer/songwriter Ezra Lipp about his philosophy to life that has given him the courage to constantly evolve and shine his talents in multiple ways, as a session musician around the Bay Area, frontman of his own band, stepping in as drummer for ALO, and recently writing and producing his first solo album. Ezra shares the inspiration behind creating his own band Magic In The Other and how he discovered that he’s a talented songwriter too. Which may have never happened if he didn’t have the courage to manifest what he really wanted and embrace the magic of the unknown. At the end, Ezra lays out a holistic model for looking at music that aligns with Leah’s research findings on how live music affects listeners. For the “Did you Know,” Leah shares this research and how it applies to a biopsychosocial model of health and healing. Taraleigh breaks it down in an easy action step that allows you to experience the fullness of music right now in the “Daily Jam.”

Ezra Lipp is a bay area-based drummer, singer, songwriter, band-leader, audio-engineer and intermittent podcast host of The Ezra Lipp Hour (More or Less). For years Ezra has been known and revered for his fearless improvisational chops and deeply musical drumming that can be heard playing with bands such as ALO, Phil Lesh & Friends, and many other rock/jam staples, as well as his ability to effortlessly support more traditional songwriters like Sean Hayes, Kacey Johansing and others as a live drummer or session musician. In more recent years he has emerged as a dynamic and charismatic frontman in his own right, engaging his natural abilities for humorous banter and antics while presenting his unique and articulate knack for heart-resonating songwriting and singing in bands like the short-lived (but power-packed) Magic In The Other which was the brain-child of Ezra’s from 2017-2020.

With the unexpected curveball of the pandemic in 2020 and the inevitable pause of live performances, Ezra turned his creative sensibilities towards the duel focus of leveling up his audio production skills (and now offers freelance mixing and mastering work under the pseudonym Middle Line Mastering), as well as honing his songwriting and producing efforts to create what will be his debut LP “The Softened Sky”, expected to be released in early 2022 along with a new band to explore and present his material in a live setting.

Episode 31: Get to Know GrooveSafe

1h 15m · Published 29 Oct 11:00

Taraleigh and Leah talk with GrooveSafe founder Ashley Driscoll and transformational coach Jessica Hans-Smolin. Ashley shares her passion for the movement of consent culture behind GrooveSafe’s mission and talks about her recent experiences hosting bystander awareness trainings, spreading the message of consent, and hosting a table inside venues on Phish tour. Jess informs listeners how she was inspired by Ashley’s mission and what her and Taraleigh will be offering for fans who have had experienced unwanting touching or sexual assault at shows. For the “Did you Know,” Leah shares research that supports Groovesafe’s Bystander Intervention training and how a simple response can make a difference in how a person is affected by the experience in the future. Taraleigh encourages everyone to be proactive and educate themselves towards a safer consent culture in the “Daily Jam.”

Ashley Driscoll is the founder of GrooveSafe, a movement within the musical community to bring awareness about unwanted touching and sexual assault at concerts. In the fall of 2016, there was an incident at a Phish show in Las Vegas where a man’s girlfriend was groped and it created a loud online discussion. There was a variety of responses ranging from “I had NO idea this was happening” to “Thank you for addressing this, I didn’t realize I was assaulted until this conversation”. Ashley learned so much from that research and those testimonials, not only how frequently this was happening, but it happens while sober, in every music scene and to people of all genders that she knew she needed to start a movement. GrooveSafe’s mission is to Stop sexual assault at concerts; Create safe and respectful dance spaces; Teach that consent is mandatory; and Emphasize respect for boundaries in a pandemic. Find out more at https://groovesafe.com/.

Jessica Hans-Smolin is a supporter of GrooveSafe and the founder of Free Your Essence Coaching where she works with those who identify as weird and wild women in a joyful, loving, sacred space where weird and wild magic is remembered and co-created every day.
