69: A Deeper Dive into Enneagram Instincts

  • There are 3 instincts underlying each of the 9 Enneagram types- self-preservation, social, and 1-1. So, there really are 27 different ways of thinking, feeling and doing life, not just 9! These instincts drive our behaviors. It’s an extremely powerful tool to know this about yourself and also to be aware that others’ in your life may be operating from a different instinct than yours. This knowledge is game changing.
  • Main points:
    • Each of us is naturally strong in one of the 3 instincts. We have access to the other two ONLY if we are self aware and healthy. But only the first comes easily & naturally to us.
    • It starts with trying to notice your primary instinct. It can help to first identify which one you connect with the least-
      • Self Preservation - meeting and protecting the safety & physical needs of “you and yours” (you and your innermost circle)
      • Social - considering the needs of the larger herd or tribe before “you and yours”
      • 1-1 - desire for intimacy and intensity

The Enneagram is a powerful tool to help you notice your thoughts, feelings, and actions. Join me in part 1 of a 3-part podcast series on the Enneagram and begin your journey of self-discovery. This series will help you better understand yourself, which can lead to healthier relationships.

Main points:

  • The Enneagram can help us notice what comes naturally to us and what gets in our way.Understanding how differently we all think, feel and do life can be transformational
  • Although you have a dominant Center of Intelligence, it’s important to notice the information each one is making available to you-
    • What are you thinking?
    • What are you feeling?
    • What's your body trying to tell you?
  • This week I am talking about the center of Intelligence triad, and how the 9 paths of the Enneagram struggles with different emotions-
    • Enneagram 8, 9 & 1 are somatic/body centered.
    • They struggle with rage and contempt. Anger is healthy, it is our body saying a boundary has been crossed; rage is not healthy.
    • Enneagram 2, 3 & 4 are in the feeling center and struggle with shame.
    • Guilt is actually healthy, it keeps us from doing things that hurt ourselves & others; shame is not healthy or true.
    • Enneagram 4, 5, & 6 are thinking centered and struggle with worry, which is energy focused on what ” could happen” in the future.
    • Fear of something happening right now, in the present, is healthy; worry is not.

67: Aligned Thoughts Create Peace

The Serenity Prayer is a powerful tool to help us align our thoughts, feelings, and actions. Aligned actions can lead to peace. As we approach the holiday season, it's a perfect time to evaluate which thoughts serve us, and which ones we need to release.

  • Main points:
    • The Serenity Prayer starts with accepting the things we cannot change. This is very challenging, as we CANNOT other people's thoughts, feelings and actions
    • Acceptance begins with noticing that many times we cannot change the circumstances or results of our lives
    • And that’s where courage comes in. It takes a lot of practice & work to change your thoughts and expectations
    • When people have very different expectations about the holiday season, AND do not have the self-awareness to be clear about what they think, feel and do, they likely will be expect other people to think, feel and do life the way we do
    • It's not easy to notice the difference between what we need to accept and what we need courage for. That's why the prayer ends with wisdom to know the difference
    • Stay curious. Keep noticing. Choose new power thoughts to try on

66: Balance Effort & Ease

Starting from a place of recognizing that you are 100% valuable and 100% loved, it’s critical to acknowledge the balance required in our lives. There is a fine interplay between taking action and allowing rest. Expanding this concept beyond caring for our physical bodies can serve us emotionally, spiritually, and relationally.

  • It takes intentionality to notice when effort is required and when we need to lean back and have a season (or moment) of ease
  • What are ten things you want to do in the next decade of your life that require effort?
  • Decide that effort means an opportunity to grow
  • Healthy growth won’t happen unless the effort is balanced with regular ease and rest

Together, let's identify what tasks can be delegated, what can be omitted from your to-do list, and the power thoughts that will help you strike a balance.

    • ​​Notice the nuance-
      • Types of hosting-dinner vs overnight guests; family vs friends)=
      • Aspects of hosting - the house, food, people, and organizing
      • Notice for each area and task - what do you love/like/dislike/hate
      • What brings you energy? What depletes it?
      • Notice the timing of each task - before, during, after?
    • Decide
      • What can be delegated or shared?
      • What can be let go/said no to?
      • A power thought to carry you through the holiday season:
        • Mine is “People in my life can think, feel and do whatever they choose.”

    • Decide ahead of time (in October) your priority over the holiday season
      • Mine is to live in abundant energy
      • What do you want yours to be?
    • Choose and schedule the practices that will move you towards your priority
      • Mine are:
        • Be intentional about staying in a peaceful state as I think about and interact with my adult children
        • Take one day for myself each week (to paint, read, stretch)
        • Practice simple meal planning

    • Notice what you are thinking with curiosity rather than self condemnation or judgment of others
    • Give yourself the gift of learning to notice your feelings (ALL of them, not just the good ones); accept them as they come, and just be with them
    • Pay attention to your 5 senses; notice the somatic messages from your body - this is important information! Look beneath them, not just at the physical sensations. Connecting to each of our senses can help grow creativity and also brings us more joy and more happiness.
