Like a Virgin

by iHeartPodcasts

A new pop culture podcast with a mix of news, cultural criticism, and comedy through a queer-trans lens, hosted by Fran Tirado and Rose Dommu. Though they are best friends now, Fran and Rose grew up very differently. Fran was a cult-ish, sheltered Christian camp counselor and Rose had a penchant for writing deranged fanfiction. Now they’re both godless heathens taking a look back at the formative classics that popped their cherries and made them who they are. Each week, the show starts off with a breakdown of the week’s pop culture news, then does a deep dive into one cultural object that one of them might be experiencing for the first time. They’ll also invite writers, comedians, activists, and entertainers to help them break it down. Follow @rosedommu and @fransquishco on Instagram and Twitter.

From the Chandelier

Rose flexes her virginity as a person who hadn't until recently seen the 2009 psychological thriller Obsessed starring Beyoncé Knowles, Ali Larter and Idris Elba. Seasoned viewer Fran expands the conversation to talk about wtf was happening in other erotic psychological thrillers feminists hate like Fatal Attraction & Basic Instinct. Tangents include the direct line from Obsessed to Lemonade, the fashion trend Fran, Rose & Jason Mraz all once had in common (fedoras) and what a 2022 remake of this iconic film would entail.

Plus, Fran's stoner girl report from the front lines of the Kacey Musgraves / MUNA stadium tour and your weekly Drag Race and RHOSLC updates.

The Alanis of Drag (feat. Charlene Incarnate)

1h 3m · Published 17 Feb 11:00

A quarter of a century ago, an album was released and the world was never the same. That album is Alanis Morissette's yodel-packed Jagged Little Pill, and on this episode, Fran & Rose get into its wrath, lyrical genius and importance in the gay canon with prolific performer Charlene Incarnate. Tangents include the notes Idina Menzel can't hit, living with a Broadway curse and the messiest moments from Rose's drag career.

Plus, find out how many times in one episode Fran & Rose can mimic Gal Gadot's hit line from Death on The Nile. Followed by an update from the world of RuPaul's Drag Race, and... Throat Goat.

Gape Expectations

1h 11m · Published 10 Feb 11:00

Like A Virgin celebrates Valentine’s Day with Rose forcing Fran to watch a movie not about love or romance, but about a meek woman being coerced into a quasi-kinky relationship by a very rich man that she loves for no apparent reason. Of course we are talking about the most lucrative movie ever adapted from a work of Twilight fan fiction: 50 Shades of Grey. On today’s episode, Fran & Rose discuss the books, the movies, why it was a runaway hit, why Rose earnestly loves it despite… a lot of things, and why Fran CANNOT get on board with almost everything about it.

Plus, our final And Just Like That season 1 recap, thoughts on RuPaul’s Drag Race: UK Versus the World and a moment with the new Mitski.

Slay What You Wanna Slay (feat. Evan Ross Katz)

1h 15m · Published 03 Feb 11:00

In every generation there is a Virgin — the kind who hasn't until very recently seen turn of the millenium hit TV series Buffy The Vampire Slayer. This week, That Virgin is Fran, and this week, Fran gets inducted into Buffy fandom by superstans Rose and guest Watcher Evan Ross Katz, writer & Buffy herstorian. Their conversation spans teenage Buffy fandom — the message boards, fan fiction and the torture of real-time TV, the genius of Sarah Michelle Gellar, the ways that Buffy was the blueprint for a lot of what we know and love in TV today, and how the women who made Buffy what it is keep fans' love afloat in spite of the J*ss Wh*d*on-of-it-all.

Plus, Fran & Rose are still reeling from the cultural reset that is Rihanna's pregnancy announcement, J Lo's Drag Race cameo, Real Housewives pretending they suddenly care about racism, and the total bummer penultimate episode of And Just Like That's first season.

Avengers ASSemble (feat. Joel Kim Booster)

1h 12m · Published 27 Jan 11:00

There are numerous ways to rank the numerous, painstakingly-intertwined movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and on today's show, Fran & Rose bravely tackle many such hierarchies with comic book nerd and comedian Joel Kim Booster. Including: which movie features Scarlett's worst wig? Which franchises are anchored by STARS who are NOT actresses and which star ACTRESSES who are NOT stars? And of course, what is the gayest Marvel movie?? If you're a Marvel fan you'll love the deep-cut commentary, but we promise you'll have fun even if you kinda zoned out during most of these movies (don't worry — so did Fran!)

Plus, a proper elegy for the high femme & fabulous era of everyone's favorite anthropomorphized candy created for the imperialist US military. And this week in TV, Fran & Rose mourn and celebrate the inception of Miranda's villain era, travel back in time to revisit Tyra's emotional terrorism on ANTM and travel ALL the way back to pre-douching times for subtle gay stuff in the new period drama The Gilded Age.

Lady Cheesecake Factory

1h 9m · Published 20 Jan 11:06

Fran & Rose are musical theater girls. They're in recovery, but that doesn't mean they won't still passionately debate who is responsible for a lapse in believability in the latest movie adaptation of West Side Story. Is it the director Steven Spielberg? Or is it William Shakespeare, who wrote the musical's original source material, Romeo & Juliet? Spoiler: Fran has notes for Shakespeare. Rose: “no notes” for Shakespeare. Other tangents include: Amanda Bynes inventing Channing Tatum, the anecdote that explains why the original West Side Story is even "about" Puerto Ricans, and grudges Fran & Rose are still holding against their high school theater directors <3

Plus, they debrief the Yellowjackets season finale, try to figure out what weed Che Diaz is doing, and break down the dynamics and best performances on this season of Drag Race.

The Final Doll

58m · Published 13 Jan 11:00

If you’re a regular listener of this podcast, you might be able to guess that Rose has always liked scary movies and Fran has embraced them gradually after decades of being terrified of anything with a whiff of brujería. Now, both love the seminal 1996 teen slasher movie Scream and its increasingly meta sequels. This week, Fran & Rose discuss the rules that one must abide by in order to successfully survive a horror movie and explore important questions like, why isn’t Jamie Lee Curtis in every movie? And what would Fran be wearing when Rose murders them in their fantasy slasher film?

Plus, they debate things you’ve all been wondering, like: is Rose’s new dog a lesbian or a she/they bisexual lesbian? Is Euphoria over-hyped? Exactly HOW much money does Carrie have? Will Fran catch up on Yellowjackets so they can finally talk about it on this podcast??

Twihard Knock Life (feat. Peyton Dix)

1h 15m · Published 06 Jan 11:00

At its purest, this podcast trafficks in the kind of art that requires sustained evangelizing to ensnare a new fan. Works of art so maligned, so… memed that it’s difficult to tell on first watch if true fans like it earnestly or ironically. Rose has been trying to get Fran to love and appreciate Twilight for years. They did finally watch it together after many botched attempts, but Fran still isn’t convinced. So Rose recruited today’s guest, famous Twihard and writer Peyton Dix to help her persuade Fran of the beauty and complexity of everything Twilight: the movies mainly but also the books they’re based on, the soundtracks, the wigs, the Mormon sensibility, and many other inane details that make Twilight singular and maddening. Virgin challenge: if you’ve never consumed Twilight, try to listen to this episode and not immediately go watch it.

Plus, Fran’s favorite sensi superhero, Rose’s favorite new show Yellowjackets, how to remember your problematic fave fantasy franchises, and a generous and hopeful recap of that very go piss girl episode of And Just Like That.

YOUR LIFE'S GOING DOWN THE TOILET!

1h 0m · Published 30 Dec 17:31

Inside you there are two wolves: one is Fran and one is Rose, and they both are obsessed with Moonstruck, the only movie where Nicolas Cage is hot. The 1987 Oscar-winning romantic comedy really has it all: a protagonist played by a woman on the pop star to leading lady pipeline, an iconic makeover, a cryptic prophecy from a witch, and valuable wisdom for the sensitive viewer. If you love love, if you’re a total Lothario, if you’re always looking for more nuanced discussions of cheating, or if you simply love Cher, you will love this episode.

Plus, Fran & Rose’s queer-in-review: all their faves from another cursèd year’s movies, TV shows, music & books.

The Real Housewives of Nazareth

1h 6m · Published 23 Dec 11:00

Merry Christmas, virgins! This year, you get the biblical origin story of religious Christmas AND Fran & Rose’s favorite secular Christmas’s offerings. Tangents include: how birthing the messiah would actually be really annoying, Lady Gaga’s not-so-classic Christmas Tree, and Cameron Diaz’s Big Stepmother Energy in The Holiday.

Plus, the A24 trailer that’s looking like a True Blood prequel with a Bjork cameo, Yellowjackets on Showtime, flop TV creator Aaron Sorkin on queer representation, and sifting through the cringe of the latest And Just Like That.
