Soooooooooo, this episode is a bit of a doozy. The topic is heavy, but it is so necessary.I had the pleasure of being in conversation with Alua Arthur, a beautiful black woman who is a Death Doula. The title alone, “DEATH DOULA”. That is a heavy title. I had a delightful conversation with Alua about her new book, “briefly perfectly human” which can be purchased here. The book is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING… It caused me to look at my life and really begin to think about how I value the fullness of my life. Do yourself the favor of 1. LISTENING TO THIS EPISODE & 2. The conversation was one that brought about an actual physical response. Friends and Kin LET’S START BY SAYING HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO HAND ME MY PURSE the podcast!!!! My baby is 4 years old on this day - April 1st, 2024. It’s been such an amazingly invigorating journey & I don’t play on stopping any time soon! I am learning so much about SO MUCH. Learning about myself and actively going through my healing journey right before your eyes. Working through grief, gratitude & growth. This show has been the catalyst for so many wonderful experiences.

I chose to not just do ONE jam for this episode. I decided to do FOUR + a bonus in celebration of HMMP’s birthday! I was on Spring Break & decided to go to Virginia Beach because it was in my budget. I was able to be close to the water, smell some new air, see some new faces, taste some different foods and just GET AWAY… I’ve said many times on the show that my mother’s father is from this area, the Tidewater Region - Newport News to be exact. Missy is as well, she’s from Portsmouth - so you know in my mind, we cousins. Even though I know we aren’t. Anyway, I love her and I feel like people don’t adore her and cherish her genius the way we should. So I decided to do so. I talk in detail about how through therapy I have learned (and I learned it slowly, and truthfully I’m still learning)that there is power and FREEDOM in uncertainty. Friends and Kin this episode is around a topic that is a recurring theme here on HAND ME MY PURSE. AND THAT’S GRATITUDE!!! Gratitude is the key to the streets. There are so many conversations that I have had about it & I know for a fact, this won’t be the last conversation had on this podcast where I will talk about GRATITUDE. It’s at the very nucleus of so many aspects of our lives!

I enjoyed having this conversation - with myself, and well with you! I went into some thoughts about how grief, stress and just EVERYDAY LIFE has led me to a space where I am a bit off kilter. It’s time for a full on reset. I have named my grief and given it a song! It was nice to change the narrative and shift it a little bit - so that I am not focused on the negative aspects of grief. It is a great conversation about how to switch from grumpy to GRATEFUL. ALSO, IT’S TIME FOR A GRATITUDE CHALLENGE!!!

Friends and Kin in this episode I was blessed enough to be in conversation with a Black unicorn, Jonathan McCrory of the National Black Theatre! His story is one of overcoming, perseverance and understanding WHO you are. What an amazing way to close out Black History Month!

In this two part conversation we learn all about my guest.We learn where he comes from, the obstacles and blessings that he navigated during his journey and what he is up to currently.It was a spiritually uplifting conversation that I am truly excited to share with you.Here’s a little bit about Jonathan:

JonathanMcCroryis a Tony Award and Emmy Award nominated producer, 2x Obie Award-winning, Harlem-based artist who has served as Executive Artistic Director at National Black Theatre since 2012 under the leadership of CEO, Sade Lythcott. He has directed numerous professional productions and concerts. He has been acknowledged as an exceptional leader additionally through Craine’s New York Business 2020 Notable LGBTQ Leaders and Executives. In 2013, he was awarded the Emerging Producer Award by the National Black Theatre Festival in Winston Salem, North Carolina, and the Torch Bearer Award by theatrical legend Woodie King Jr. He is a founding member of the collaborative producing organizations Harlem9, Black Theatre Commons, The Jubilee, Next Generation National Network and The Movement Theatre Company.McCrorysits on the National Advisory Committee for Howlround.comand was a member of the original cohort for ArtEquity. A Washington, DC native,McCroryattended the Duke Ellington School of the Arts and New York University’s TISCH School of the Arts.
